Do any of you find that a USB 5.1 (7.1?) surround card is any use? I'm thinking of the Creative X-Fi Pro. Would it offer any improvement compared to the in-built Realtek setup on an M570TU?

I broke my (3rd in 4 years) set of expensive "gaming" headphones all of which which had in-built "sound cards" and now my rugged (10+ year old) Sony MDR V6 headphones connected via the plain old jack don't seem to sound as good as the old "gaming" ones did. Is it just the placebo effect, or do sound cards actually improve distance perception in shooters?

ive got the original x-fi soundcard connected via the express card slot and its brill with 5.1 speakers connected so the newer usb x-fi will be as good if not better.

Thanks MrDJ! I wasn't sure - I thought I recalled a thread a couple of years back about someone setting up a software-driven 5.1 surround with the 570's integrated card - but it didn't seem to make sense at the time.

So going to splash out on an X-Fi tomorrow. Knowing my luck I'll just start breaking fragile soundcards instead of headphones now!

not sure how much they are now but mine was £55 3 years ago and then i had to buy the docking connection for the 5.1 but it sure does sound wicked when gaming.

think i remember that thread. thought that was just to boost the on board speakers. i could be wrong though :)
