I was thinking of getting this notebook but I heard it was loud during gaming but from people with the 8800GTX(dont know if the GPU makes a difference). Im getting the one with the 9800GT in case it does matter. So is it loud?

It`s got a nasty whine here and there. It`s not suited for quiet places, but it features a silent mode which downclocks everything and reduces fan noise, making it (probably) usable even in quiet places...

hmmm. I really wanted a quiet laptop but this one is too perfect because I can downgrade the CPU to make it 1300$ and upgrade later. Is it louder than xbox 360? Please say no!!

    The M860TU is quieter.
I dunno any laptop noisier than an XBOX360 though...
However, if you use max fans on the RU/TU, it will sound like a vacuum :D

the max fan is for 120F+ room temperature. unless global warming happen sooner or you plan to game in steam room, otherwise you won't need max fan.

My 5793 (M571RU) is 'very' loud. I'd never use it in like, a classroom or a library or some other quiet place. My old Dell Inspiron 9100 was a little louder but this thing is still quite the little jet engine.

Then something is wrong with your notebook, as we concluded that to be the case when you got the notebook.

I wonder what would happen if you flashed your BIOS with the one I’m using, because mine if virtually silent using XP and battery. Not only do I use mine in a classroom, but I also sneak in some window mode gaming. The only time I notice the fans are on, is when they kick into high every now and then for a second.

Just to add...my classrooms and study halls are not quiet, not saying that it makes a difference to the noise coming from the Sager. :D

I tried to record a sample but my lousy mic failed me badly. I also want to point out that I have T9600 and 9800M GTX and those are quite hot even when idling.

there are video for the noise, but it is just unrealistic because different camcorders have different results, and also you know you can adjust the volume of your speakers right? I can push them to max but it's not the real noise level of the fans.

When I get home later on, I’ll pull out the old PDA and have a go at. I have a feeling it will make some mad. As I said, it is virtually silent on boot and thereafter. I will start the recording directly behind the fans before I power it on, you will know what’s going on from the sounds of the computer. I will have it run while running a quake 3 and quake 4 demo, and also at the start of a movie. The file might get rather long, so I hope someone is willing to host it. If not, I’ll just send it directly to you. Can’t use it in a Library, oh please! I shut the lid on mine while on the desk; you would never know it is running. I almost toasted mine packing it in the case while it was on, thinking it was off. Now it seems that there are some differences according to what people hear or what is actually coming from their machines, I can’t wait to hear what is coming from mine when I don’t hear anything.

This guy actually made a video, mine will be a recording.

I'm using the .09 one that was posted a couple of weeks ago, tho this laptop has been loud since I got it. I run Vista x64, with high performance settings. I do not allow the CPU or GPU to clock down.

OK, I think my BIOS is only for this machine (Hyrican).

    BIOS Revision: 1.00.08HY

It's on right now, and I can't hear chit! Even holding it to my ears with it on, I don't believe the fans are on???

Looking at the bottom, there is only one fan running and it's from the GPU.

Further editing. While looking at the fans directly, the CPU fan only turns on every now and then while the other fan is on low. take it, i'm on battery power right now.

    Editing even more...

The notebook has been on for a while now, and still nothing. of course I knew this but it's fun actually checking it out. Oh, and i booted to the vista install by the way.

    Ha!

I knew this was happening! When I close my lid and do nothing, all fans are off and the notebook is still on! That is why I almost burned up my unit when I first got it; no fans are running at that time! Even when turning off sleep mode, the fans still shut off when the lid is closed.

When I turned my notebook on, I didn’t even know it was on. After I was done admiring and testing on it, I hit the power switch thinking it was off. I wanted to go show it off, but it was raining at the time. So I decided to wrap it in plastic before putting it in the supplied case. Little did I know at the time, the notebook was still on? So when I got to my destination, I smelled something like burned plastic. Opened my notebook bag, and my notebook was H.O.T.! The plastic was soft, and it seemed as if it was on the verge of melting. So that is how my fun started with this notebook, almost toasting it before I even got to use it. I’m sure even with the notebook being place in the case while on, it wouldn’t have happened that way. Wrapping the notebook in the plastic is what caused that.

You won't have that problem, as I'm sure you will hear yours when you turn it on. :D J/K! ;)

Testing the notebook today, I can see why. When I close the lid on the notebook, it shuts the fans off. At the time, I’m sure the power switch was set to sleep mode. So having the notebook in my hand, I would not have known it was on unless I would have payed attention to the blue light that is on. Remember, I just got the notebook and didn’t know this at the time. I also proved today, that it doesn't make any noise on battery power. So forgive me for being stupid, boo hoo! :p

OK, I had to do this is a totally silent environment or otherwise you wouldn’t hear anything. I turned the notebook over, so you can hear the fans. I placed a towel over the bottom of the notebook to get the fans to kick in; you can hear this at the beginning of the video. This is necessary, or else the video would be useless on the account you wouldn’t hear anything at all. Once the fans go thru a high, medium throttle, they just shut off. Or at least the CPU fan is off while the other fan is on very low. As you can hear, it is totally silent even starting a game. In a Library environment, even at medium you wouldn’t hear anything, but mine don’t even run at that. I don’t have any fan controls, so I can’t press a button to turn them up or down, it is totally dependent on the BIOS.

    Why are you ROFL!?

I told you mine is silent on battery mode, which is what you would use when on the road. Even powered up thru power supply it is silent, untill I start to do something which requires heavy CPU or GPU usage. But even then, it's not bad.

But that nobody has replied to my thread, makes me wonder if I'm the only lucky one? I will make the recording for you when I get home, but there is nothing to hear on battery power, so I will have to use the power adapter. If you feel like this might be an issue for you, why not try the 15" model instead?

My 5796 is dead quiet in silent mode. Really, dead quiet. I'm in silent mode right now, and when I'm typing I can barely hear any sound at all coming from the laptop. Very, very quiet.

Though it is louder in normal mode, I barely notice, even when I'm learning next to it.

Just tested watching the Blu-ray movie and my fans are louder in silent-mode than the Blu-ray drive.

EDIT: GPU is 49 Celcius and both cores 38 Celcius. How can I monitor my fans rpms?

EDIT2: It seems that it doesn't matter how much both CPU and GPU has load (1-100%) in silent mode, fans will keep their rpms stable. They will go at full blast when normal-mode is enabled.

Sorry that video turned out so dark, but I couldn’t wake everyone trying to record the sound from my notebook. I was sitting there for 30 minutes trying to get the fans to kick in so you can hear them, but I had to finally use a towel to speed up things.

Yes tankbuster, unless doing something very CPU or GPU intensive the notebook is dead silent. I didn’t know the video had stopped, because I continued to play madden for around 5 minutes before the fans kicked on for a second or two again. O well…now you have audio with bad video of my notebook.
