    Morning all!

I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me?

I recently bought a Rock Xtreme ctx M57U off eBay, the LCD & battery both needed to be replaced which wasn't a problem as my brother has a liquid damaged M57A - the LCD wasn't interchangeable so had to get a new one but at least I saved on a new battery.
Anyway, it came with Windows XP installed but I wanted to upgrade so I formatted and installed W7, I done all the updates and everything was looking sweet - until I wanted to install off a DVD - W7 couldn't see the DVD ROM.
It's showing in BIOS and I installed W7 with it so I thought it must be a Windows issue, after several of looking it seems this problem isn't uncommon but likewise there seems to be no solid solution either - then I remembered that my brothers M57A was running W7 with no problems - the only difference I could think of would be the BIOS?
I'm trying to get his to at least post BIOS so I can try and see what one its using then hunt it down, but my own BIOS doesn't show a version number or anything that I could see and it also seems very hard to track down an updated BIOS for this unit.
I have looked in the BIOS thread on here and also the outdated BIOS thread but cannot find the M57U version - the nearest I could see is the M57RU, would this work or am I running a risk of bricking it?

I did format and go back to XP and the drive was there, I then upgraded to Vista whilst in Windows hoping it would retain the drive it was using to upgrade but no such luck, once Vista had been installed the drive has gone from Windows Explorer, there isn't even the DVD/CD ROM tree in Device Manager yet BIOS still shows it!

Any helpful ideas? Either for updating BIOS or for other options for me to explore?
I know I can go back to XP and get my drive back but it seems silly to have to choose between XP and a drive or W7 and no drive when I know that W7 and a drive can work together as proven by my brothers one!

I might see if W8 shows the drive or - as I suspect - with it being based on W7 it will change nothing (the same way Vista and W7 are both not seeing the drive)

Sorry for the long and rambling post!

Thanks for the help, I'll give it a poke when I've a little more time.
I've been trying to find out what touchpad I have, I've not needed to install any drivers for it and it works as it should - I can't see it in Device Manager anywhere and there nothing in Keyboard or Mouse settings - I'm assuming the difference between those two BIOS's is if the Touchpad will be supported or not?
I could just install one and if the touchpad doesn't work I could try the other BIOS? I can't imagine it'll brick over a non supported touchpad?

    Cheers again

    Jules

Edit: iPhone (incorrectly) decided it knew what I wanted to type

Thanks for this, I've tried running the BIOS app from M57U_106 (PHLASH16) and it tells me I need a 64 bit version.....
Do I need to reinstall W7 again and use the 32bitt version or does this have to run my making a bootable USB pendrive version?

    Many thanks - again!

I'm off to bed shortly as I'm off to work - again - early in the morning but will try this tomorrow evening.

I assume running the BIOS update from a USB it doesn't matter if I'm running W7 in 32 or 64bit flavour?

    Cheers
    Jules

Hi, I tried running the Prema mod as per the link, I put the contents of M57U_H806.zip in the root of the USB pendrive, rebooted laptop, waited for the command prompt to boot from USB.......nothing.
After pressing F7 to get to the Boot Selection screen my only option is W7, there is no USB drive to select.
So, I went into BIOS and set all USB devices (USB CDROM > USB HDD > USB FDC > USB KEY) as priortys then it's the DVD ROM and finally the HDD but it still boots off the HDD (If I put a CD/DVD In the drive it will ask if I want to boot from there first) and still no sign of the USB after using F7.

I assume I'm doing the correct thing by putting the files into D: (along side LOCALE (folder), Autorun (icon) and Autorun (Setup file) and not into the "Locales" folder or anything?

This is turning in to a ridiculously long task for something that should be so simple! :(

    I could :)

Just been having a days thinking - Windows 8 - surely as that's based on W7 which in turn was based on Vista and on neither Vista or W7 could I see my DVD drive then surely W8 won't be able to neither?
    WRONG!
I've just put the evaluation copy of W8 on, and as much as I don't like the operation of it so far with the "hot corners" it does see my DVD drive!

So where does this leave me? I guess that means my BIOS is ok for W8 and XP but doesn't go well with Vista and W7?
Or is it more a problem with Vista & W7?
I've tried so many different fixes I've found online and not one has worked but it surely has to be a Windows problem now?

Prima, do you have any idea what controller chip to use on setfsb? The t7600 chip is still a lot of cash and wouldn't mind getting a bit more power out the m57u :)

Cheers for the bios files btw, worked a treat on mine!

Edit, used clockgen and got it up to 2.33ghz nice and stable :)
