Hey guys, first time poster here,
I recently bought a 2nd hand M860TU. I have since upgraded the GFX card from a 9800GTS to a 260MGTX that I purchased thru MXM-Upgrade.
It runs fine while only using the battery, but once I plug in the AC adapter, it starts acting up. Most times when I boot up with the cord plugged in, it gets to the Win 7 loading screen then freezes. I have tried numerous nVidia drivers but to no avail. The only stable one I've come across is 189.74 that lets me boot up with the AC disconnected, then plugged in once its running. But the screen starts flickering with the video drivers constantly failing then recovering once I start running programs.
Does it look like I've received a dud card from MXM, or have other users experienced these problems doing the same upgrade? Is the card drawing too much power while its plugged in causing the freezing?
Bear in mind that it runs fine while on the battery and the laptop still charges when connected. Also on V .17 bios, using AS5 on both the CPU and GPU.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!![]()

Check the temperature of your GPU. [use HWMonitor or another temperature monitoring program] It's possible that you don't have good contact with your GPU heat sink, thermal paste and videocard causing your card to overheat.
For your information, my 260M GTX runs between 35 and 40C when not gaming. If you are running above 85 to 90C, then you would need to redo your thermal paste application. -
It seemed fine, it idled around the 37 to 40 mark.
I have since reinstalled the older 9800MGTS and the laptop is running normal again. I'm going to send it back to MXM-Upgrade under their warranty and hopefully receive another that works.
Here's hoping...:GEEK: -
I have the 9800m GT in my latop and run win 7.
I recently updated the driver (with newest official nvidia release) and since then i get BSOD while logging into windows if i have a external monitor plugged in through hdmi. Once windows shows up i can plug in external monitor and no problems.
Do you have an external monitor plugged in? if you do, try booting the laptop with just the laptop screen.
good luck! -

the 197.16 drivers affected a lot of people with bsod but not heard much about the latest 257.15 beta's yet.
i swear by 186.81 which imo have been the best ive ever used. -
Only hope now is to send it back for an exchange.
