The main reason I RMA'd my laptop to PCMW is because of the fingerprint reader, the system suddenly was unable to detect the fingerprint device.

When I got it everything was working properly, I reinstalled everything and the laptop was smooth flowing.

Now, I used my laptop up without AC power until it notified me that the battery was low already (10%). Then I turned it off, plugged it in AC, booted it, and guess what the fingerprint reader, again, is not detected by the system. I tried rebooting over and over to see if something will happen, but had no luck.

What could be the problem with this? I got disappointed suddenly. :(

Anyone got the same problem as me?

this might be a silly question if i misunderstood the question but its worth a go kevin.
when you reboot do you only get the option for a password login. if so does it give the option underneath to switch user this should then give you side by side option of either fingerprint or password log in.

alternatively it might just need the drivers reinstalled.

it gives me an option to pick whether to login by password or fingerprint but under the fingerprint icon it says "cannot find device". I'm pretty sure it isn't due to the drivers since I installed them again and you can't even "see" the biometric fingerprint sensor under device manager which means that the system cannot see the device is plugged in.

then i tried to fully charge laptop and then suddenly it appeared again!

tried again to use with batteries and i noticed that when i shut down the system and turn it on with battery ONLY, it can't detect the device. can you try the same thing for me? so as to compare results.

thats strange. so it sounds like it takes a lot of draining power to use the reader so it somehow deactivates itself on battery.

ill have a go for you but it wont be until later as im not at home now and using older laptop.

Ok, I'll wait for you, this is very weird. I tried again with 100% charged battery and AC power plugged in and it did not recognize it again :( I don't know what to do with this.

Hey, I have a 5796 and yeah, that's happened to me a few times. When it does happen, it occurs on boot up only and not when it returns from sleep. Also, I loose my USB mouse connection as well (not sure if you do). This makes me think that the fingerprint reader and the USB controller are drawing power from the same board and that sometimes that board get improperly powered up? (in my experience it doesn't only happen when turning on using battery power only, as I always turn my computer on using battery power only).

Anyway, I just shut down fully and then restart and it goes away. Again, it's only happened to me like 2-3 times in the past 6 months.

    @MrDJ

Did you try it until the battery reaches 10%? And when it does reach that level shut it down and then turn it on, not restart.

well, to finally give you the answer (that you didnt want to hear).
    11% battery turned off.
turned on and got the loud warning beep at 8%
and fingerprint reader still worked for me.
as i took the pictures i plugged it in and thats why the battery display was filling up.
