I've started a new thread because I need some definite answers about the screen quality.
The viewing angle doesn't bother me too much, as I've heard it's average.
My main issue is what I've heard about the screen being "grainy" I'll be getting the glossy screen 1600x1080 version and I really do need the text to be crystal clear. Is screen still good for reading lots of text? I've heard that it's a good screen but I'm not sure if that's simply in a gaming context. I need more than just a good gaming screen.
I've also heard issues about the brightness. Is it really going to be something that troubles you?
I was looking at my mate's Macbook pro laptop today and his screen his crystal clear. It also has a superb viewing angle. It's a 1400x900ish resolution.

I've got the 1680x1050 resolution screen myself, and coming from a samsung 226bw monitor from my computer, I can say a few things.
Colour accuracy is beautiful on this screen, mine hasn't had a hint of graininess, and viewing angles are superb (even vertical, which is a problem on a lot of LCDs thats often overlooked). Viewing text for me is absolutely not a problem. I haven't even had to change any DPI settings in windows vista. It's very comfortable and easy on the eyes.
I do have one thing to complain about however; coming from a 2ms response time monitor with the 226bw, and going to this one, I notice significant ghosting while gaming. Then again though, when I switched from an old CRT monitor to an LCD one, I noticed ghosting even on my 2ms response time Samsung. Maybe I'm just picky, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. -
That's a fair response. I use Samsung SyncMaster 940b screens (2 of them) and they are fantastic. I bought my first one about 3 years ago for 400 dollars and a second one several months ago for still 300 dollars. They are the best 19" screens I've ever seen. I do therefore have a high standard set but if text is very clear then I'll be happy.
I did notice some ghosting on my LCD compared to my CRT but I guess I've gotten over it. It was only really apparent in sports games like PES anyway, not FPS. -
Ugh.. I'll never forget my first time playing Counterstrike Source on an LCD, I shut the game off after 20 minutes because I couldn't take it.
Eventually I just got used to it I suppose... but ideally, I'd like a small plasma screen (which is currently impossible). -
Here's the comparaison of the colours between my laptop and my Samsung 226BW. You can see that the bottom left is different by the tone of the color. I don't know if its the color file or something. Both screens are clear, its definitly not grainy. It may look grainy if you're switching from 1920x1200 to 1680x1050 but you'll get used to it. I have used a 1920x1200 15'' laptop and at first, it looked a bit grainy but I got used to it and now it just looks sharp. I still prefer to play games on my Samsung 22'' for the screen size, not because the display on the laptop is poor.
My friend have a 17'' .Macbook Pro at the same resolution that my laptop and I believe I can say that both have a great display, sharp and clear. Maybe the MBP have better viewing angles. We were 4 persons trying to watch a movie on this laptop: at least one person will suffer from the poor viewing angle.
