Hello
I am close to purchasing a couple of M860TU laptops and wanted to get a handle on the CPU whine issue as it relates to this model. I've done a bit of research and most of the information I've found says that this is related to certain power modes of mobile CPUs (From what I can tell, probably the lowest power modes of the laptop)
This problem is sometimes described as CPU buzzing, whining, or the "EEEE EEEE EEE sound" by the EEEE EEEE EEEE club. This isn't related to laptop manufacturer, the noise can get louder or quieter, some people can't hear it, some laptops don't have it and there is a lot of evidence of the whining in Intel mobile processors but not a lot for AMD or non-intel mobile processors.
Here is the sound (EEEE EEEE EEEE)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErkhU2qK-fM&NR=1
Here is dell's official description of the problem
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&dl=false&l=en&s=dhs&docid=0A7D5CD2E17F5125E0401E0A55176204&doclang=en
A summary from that page:
Here are some of the things people have said works for them: (not specific to this model)
- Use an AC adapter - this problem only occurs on battery.
- Use the High Performance ACPI profile.
- Use software to prevent the CPU from going into the "C5 mode" (or C4, or C3 depending on the CPU)
- Reinstall Power Management in Vista
- Plug in, then unplug a USB device
- Enable bluetooth
- Upgrade/downgrade BIOS versions
However this seems like one of the best bets I've read
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=3516
although the cpunoise site has a summary of fixes that also looks good
http://cpunoise.shrtl.com/pmwiki.php?n=Main.Fix
My question for you M860TU owners out there: do any of these fixes work for you and if so, do they have negative impacts like extra heat or shorter battery life.
thanks much
"Piezoelectric Effect" hurmph.

turning bluetooth on is the only fix ive heard off. there was a patch/bios update but i dont think that worked.
it doesnt bother me in the slightest and is only noticeable if you stick your head close to the end key on the right of the keyboard.
above links are blocked at work but i will check later to make sure its the same as the eee eee eeeeee morse code club. -
its rather bad... and acording to the bios upgrades there are 2 sources of noise.. one from AC and one from DC... and aparently if u go all the way up to the .13 bios it should fix (acording to clevo)...
im going to try soon.. but lets just say its not enugh of a issue for it to be my Number1 priority... the fans hide all of it 80% of the time.
i find it to be no worse than dead noise from headphones .. so its really not a big issue -
I have actually had this problem since I bought the notebook. It hasn't really been an issue but I'd like to get rid of it...How do I upgrade my bios?
-
Also...it only occurs for me when the notebook is practically idling...once I perform a task like opening an application or playing music the noise goes away. Appears to be coming from the HD area..
-
well this thread talks about the .13 bios (including some comments about it not fixing the eee eee eee problem)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=246530
but it sounds like you want to research the process a bit.
Kevin_Jack2.0 says in that thread:

could everyone just confirm that this is the same sound as you are getting (click on image below).
the only temporary fix as far as we know is turning bluetooth on.
for anyone thinking against buying the m860tu then dont even go there.
this laptop is the dogs dangley bits and a little noise in the background should not be a deal braker in any way. dont forget you are buying a gaming laptop so the fan is normaly running faster and you are unable to hear the sound then.
the only time i can hear this noise is if i put my head close (within 6") of the end key.
if you think the sound is loud in the video its because my digital video camera was actually resting on the side of the laptop. without doing this you could not hear the sound on the video.

So MrDJ and Caos81, are you saying you tried rmclock and it didn't help?
-
Mr. DJ That is the sound. And no I haven't tried the other fixes...I guess i'm not that motivated to fix it, it doesn't really bother me that much. If there was some patch or something easy to download and install I would do that. But it seems like this problem is here to stay.
-
it doesnt really bother me and i havnt updated anything except the heat patch when i first got my Nexus.
still running on original graphics drivers and only had bios updated once and that was done by Andrew. in other words im a lazy bugger. -
Ok thanks, you two.
I wonder if there are any other M860TU users out there who have tried fixing the whining sound with rmclock?
