so it looks like my desktop couldnt last one more day for me to transfer my files to my laptop. last night i got a bsod which, while more random than usual, was not uncommon with my desktop. however afterward when i power it up i get no vga signal. Ive tried reseating all the connections to no avail, and now after half a dozen hard reboots im detecting that aweful and indicative smell of burning dust :/ i still have all my music, all my games, some programs, and a bunch of random files to transfer (ive been using an 8gb thumbdrive).
so question is, can i just disconnect the power cable from my sata harddrive from desktop and plug it into the e-sata port? i dont want to plug it in and have the harddrive or the laptop fry on me. the drive i would be getting data from doesnt have windows installed on it, its just a media drive.

The drive has to have power since it is a 3.5" drive. You need to get an enclosure for this to work, just make sure it has esata.
-
doesnt the sata cable supply power to the drive?
-
No, never.
-
you should notice that there are two cables going to your HDD atm in your desktop. the esata and power supply.

yeah i just checked, i must have forgotten about the molex. i dont suppose it would work to leave the molex plugged into the desktop for power and plug in the data cable to the laptop?
i dont really have a way to get an enclosure atm. -
worst thing it would do is effect the hard-drive as power is not transfered through the esata.
I bet it would work. I see no other use for the esata then. I coulf be wrong though. -
how could it affect the laptop?
anyone else want to weigh in on this? -

I wouldn't see this affecting the hard drive much at all. As long as it's getting juice from somewhere, it should be fine. I'd be more comfortable using a drive enclosure, myself, but you shouldn't hurt anything by leaving the molex hooked up to your desktop's power supply.
Don't forget, you can always call our 24/7 support team for questions like this, too.

frying the harddrive would be just as bad! I have more than a hundred gigs of data I need!
-
well, it wouldnt destroy the data. It would just fry the motor if anything happened. I mean its not going to go "OMG improper/different use method!!! MUST DESTROY DATA!!! !SCRIBBLE! !SCRIBBLE! !SCRATCH!!!!!!!!

well something else i didnt know. the connector for standard sata on my desktop is different than the e-sata input :\
hmph, learn something new every day. Looks like I'll have to wait until Monday to borrow an enclosure or something from work -
I miss Europe for the wine. Wine for every occasion. In some places, wine is cheaper than WATER! -

i have often powered hard drives from different pc's than the data wire is connected to, as long as it's getting decent power from somewhere, it'll be fine
