    Greetings NBR members,

A little less than 2 years ago, I was in the market for a new laptop and found the people in the NBR community to be (mostly ;) ) a very helpful bunch. After many weeks of frustration and uncertainty I ended up being very satisfied with my purchase at the time (namely an ASUS W3J). I also, for a while, became an active member of the NBR ASUS community. Unfortunately, the responsabilities in my life began to increase and my direct involvement greatly declined. However, I continued following the developments in many of the forums from a distance and, alas, I am now once again in the market for a shiny new lappy. :)

Introductions aside, what im looking for this time around is a little different. I want a beast of a machine but portability is also a factor im considering. At first I was really interested in the M15x, but after what I've seen over at the Alienware Forum, I quickly decided that I'd pass. As of last week, I was all set on pre-ordering a M860TU (and the folks over at XoticPC were more than helpful) but I also realized that the M570TU was not much larger in terms of dimensions and weight.

    Any thoughts on this matter?

    Thanks in advance.

    sorry, I disagree on this!

    I had xps 1530 and have seen a 17" in asus G70.
I admit that the 17" screen is much more of a joy for gaming and from m15x experience, I would say that 17" would avoid overheating problem & expand lifetime of the notebook.
I suggest you go for a 17" for serious gaming & future proof.

I would take the TU because it's smaller in case you`re worried about weight.

But MY personal choice would be the 57TU , being a 17 incher it`s perfect.

Its only 1.2lbs heavier, about 1.1" longer in width and .8" in depth which is not to bad. Also the 860TU is thicker than the 5796

Thats what I was trying to get at.

At home though, the laptop would be connected to a 24inch monitor so screen size is not a great issue. And it seems the 860TU portability advantage is not really significant given its dimensions and weight. Plus I can get slightly better specs on the 5796.

This is what Ive been able to discern so far. Guess I'm waiting for the follks that picked the 860 over the 570 to weigh in with their thoughts :)

...and what if, when both machines are out there, everyone says they're both great! :p

I'm in the same situation, can't decide which one to get... I don't cara much about the weight and size, because I will only carry it to the car, and from the car to school, but less weight is always better=p. On the other soide, CAD will have more screen in 17 in=p

Honestly the height of the m860tu means nothing. In terms of portability the length and width and weight should be considered. Trust me, those few additions to the size of the 17" laptop will be felt eventually in the usage time of the laptop. The 15" is going to be much easier to carry around.

But we can only prove this say, 6 months after everyone has their machines.

look at it this way then, the m570tu CAN take the 9800 GTX the m860TU cannot, i am also debating whether to get the 17" but i only want it in silver....This i cant get yet an im guessing it will be called a M571TU? has the chassis changed since the M570RU does anoyone know??

Man this debate rages on...let me give you my take on it...

I initially got a dv2500t from HP. Small, reliable - but not a gaming powerhouse by any means so I returned it and went for an XPS m1530. Loved it. Gaming was pretty decent but build quality was seriously lacking and I felt that it was just too thin for it's own good considerign it's high temps. Then I moved to the M1730 with dual 8800GTX running in SLi. Man that was a gaming powerhouse but problem there is that it weighed a ton and the drivers always seemed pre-mature and gameplay was not all it could be. Went down to the Gateway P6831 after that but found I could not take it to class as often as I wanted. The gateway was an awesome laptop - probably the best I've owned to date considering the value but it was just too big to carry around everywhere all the time. I found that I was generally happiest with the m1530, a 15.4' notebook, because size DOES make big difference.

And honestly - I've had all these laptops within a one year period ever since I joined NBR last summer.

Point is - size does matter a LOT but gaming and durability also matters. I think the M860TU is the best bet in the whole mix - it's honestly got everything...

As an aside - I got the notebook in my sig (m860tu) ordered for 1650 shipped. I think it's honestly one of the best prices anyone got for this rig but i'm seriously considering whether I should just get a HPtx2500z for portability for 850, then get a killer desktop or the rest. Man this is so tough.

Sorry to highjack your thread here bro.

Agreed 100%. Honestly who cares about height on a laptop, its always been the width/depth of the 17"ers that annoyed me most. Also over a pound lighter is a big deal.

Im leaning more and more towards the 8660 just because most of the time, i wont be making use of the 17in screen. The one thing thats still on my mind is the difference between the 9800gt and the 9800gtx and if the latter would have a significant impact on the longevity of my new notebook...

Edit: just thought of something else: Say I got the 8660, and assuming money is not an issue, how would the T9600 fare against the P9500. I was originally considering the latter due to the lower power consumption and (im assuming) lesser heat dissipation. On the other hand, the T9600 may extend the life of my notebook. Thoughts?

You have converted me :D .
As my case is similar, I will take your experience in as a notebook carrier :p and most probably will get the 860tu.
