I went with this combo, but I was very nervous because it's not supported by Clevo.
In the beginning, I encountered a few hurdles. The CPU temperatures were fine at idle and minor task doing, but they were terrible under full load(85+). I swapped the thermal paste that came with the processor for some arctic silver. I also undervolted it a little bit too. This seemed to do the trick.
In the end, I am very satisfied. Under full load, the CPU temps are in the low 70s. I played wow the other night for a good 3hrs, and the temperature reached 69 at the highest. My first 3dmark06 came in at 10700. I could easily get into the 11000s and maybe 12000s with some GPU oc'ing(which currently runs at a cool 70). I saved a few bucks too going the barebones route and ordering parts separately...

I just wonder how much benefit you got over the Q9000. I know the Q9100 has more cache and a few .mhz more clock speed but I wonder if you would have noticed this if you went with the Q9000 instead.
I would run Orthos CPU Stress Test for a few hours to stress all of the CPU Cores to get a really good idea of full load temperatures since I am not sure how CPU intensive WOW is or whether that game is more GPU dependent.
Orthos CPU Stress Test will give you a worst case scenario and hopefully more confidence in your setup. I wonder what it is with so many stories of cheap or inadequately applied thermal grease used by resellers.
I will be running that Orthos CPU Stress testwhen my NP8662 arrives with the Q9000 tomorrow. -
I did run Orthos. The version I I was running only stressed 2 cores though. I don't think the Q9100 is a huge upgrade over the Q9000. I looked at it this way though:
If I could get a q9100 + m860tu for a 100 dollars less than ordering a q9000 + m860tu from a reseller... why not? -
You can stress four cores by run orthos twice and use task manager to set the cores that you wanna stress.
-
Which OS do you have? The lowest I could get so far was 70. The problem is the settings are not sticking-
-
Just use prime95, it'll do 4 tests
-
I'm running Win7 RC. My settings seem to stick fine. The only time they will reset is when I close the lid.
-
I'm selling my notebook, but when I come back (hopefully soon...), I'll probably go the barebones + Q9100 route also. I'd need to sell my T9800 first though.
For the topic, my settings stick in Win 7 64-bit wwith no problem. What happens? When you restart, the voltages show as being back to stock? -
I dont want to hijack this thread- To the OP, what are your voltage settings? -
I've been running at 1.05 for a week now with no issues.
-
I didn't know Prime95 automatically used the number of cores you have on your laptop or PC. I will try this one tomorrow. Looks like the next few days will be very busy installing lots of games, running stress tests and 3D marks.
-
use wPrime and set the number of threads, then run the stress test 1024M

The Bonus of the Q9100 over the 9000, is a much higher clock speed/ IE Ghz
-
I splurged for CPUGenie. I don't mind paying for something that I'll be using.
I decided to take the lazy route and let CPUGenie search for the ideal voltage for my CPU. I chose the 3 min per voltage option which will run for 3 hours. I may also test the 10 min and 20 min per clock voltage options at a later date. It will be interesting to see what the lowest voltage would be. -
Q9000 is 2ghz and 6megs of L2 cache Q9100 is 2.26ghz and 12megs L2 cache . .26ghz is not what i would call much higher.

Oh I am thinking of the Q9300 arent I... my bad 2.93 ghz... .93ghz would see a difference

I have never heard of CPU Genie until you mentioned it. I downloaded the fully functional 30 day trial so will definitely be giving this one a good testing. That is when my NP8662 arrives. It is in transit as we speak.
-
I tied genie and had some difficulty using it, so I gave up on it. It refused to adjust my voltages for some reason.
-
previous voltage: 1.150
current voltage: 1.050
Laptop now tops at 78C full load vs 85C. With UT3 running, 69-72C. -
-
. Oh btw i think its awesome you stuffed the Qx9300 into your machine i would have done the same thing .
-
Who that non-good-person which bought all Q9100 on e-bay? Looks like my barebone will be w\o CPU for long time now.
-
-
Q9100 for $268.... thats a nice deal for sure.
-
Yeah I got greedy, and returned the Q9100 for the QX9300. -
-
So, I'm probably in the market for a lappy sooner rather than later and while price isn't an issue I'm leaning towards a 8662 versus the 9280 (portability). My question is: if we contact xiaobiyang for a q9100 should we reference anyone here? -
Nah he answers all inquiries.
If you're going that route, you would be better off buying a barebones from RJ Tech than getting an 8662. -
-
Bargain Q9100 on ebay:

As a reminder, QGMU is the version that has the working temp sensors - -
Does the QAVK Q9100 have temp sensors?
-
Yeap, thanks. Watching on Shirley's Q9100 and QX9300 since morning.
Can't choose which better to buy. Also Shirley is not response for last >30 hours. I want to know about delivery in to my country.
Addidional:
Just got response from xiaobaiyang2, he said
-
Try asking Shirley right now. I just got a response back to my QAVK question within 20 minutes. Fyi, QAVK does not have temp sensors.
Also, xiaobaiyang2 is probably going off the fact that Clevo doesn't officially support the higher quads. -
Since shirleyfu has best offer, anyone can send their offer- I think at $299 shipped, it's already a bargain. You could also ask someone from the Gateway FX forum- There might still be someone who bought one of these quads (including me, but returned the Q9100), only to find out the motherboard or bios does not support it. -
You're other option is to monitor eBay and hope for another wave of oversupply of OEM processors. I just can't see paying $700-$1200 for the retail versions. I got lucky with the QX9300. I did inform people here, but was probably ignored. Oh well-
Or you could forego the quads altogether and just get an X9100 or T9900. -
A little bit of spin-off of this thread...
I've ordered a barebone from rjtech. How to determinate if they sent a TU or ETU version?
TU will not support QUADs as ETU doing.
Does GTX 260M on-board can be a proof that this is ETU due TU not supports this VC also?
I've tried to find out it from RJ but they are offline now and I'm start to worry about it right now and want to be sure which CPU better to order from our China comrads.
Many thanks in advance. -
They are only selling ETUs, as is evidenced by the Q9000 in the CPU options.
-
If the OP is still here somewhere, I'd like to see the temps under full load of the Q9100 and the 3dmark06
I'm curious to see the comparison with the Qx9300 of k9hydr4
-
Intel Quad core Q9200 QAVS 2.4G ...shirley is selling this on ebay as well.
A) will it work in the np8662?
B) will it require undervolting, etc like the 9300?
I know the 9100 is a plop in and go...courtesy of k9hydr4...but not sure about this 9200 -
-
Hmm, Q9200 QAVS... Must be w/o temp. sensors.
-
-
Undervolt is not a must, but if you want a cool temperatur just undervolt it.
-
if i went with an SSD would that "help" overall heat put out by the 8662 in terms of not needing to undervolt and providing an overall lower temp signature? -
Short answer is no, an SSD won't effect CPU temp, positively or negatively.
-
Can the q9100 be OC'd to 3.0 Ghz and is it complicated to overclock it?
Thanks, -
only way folks have been able to overclock on this clevo is by flashing the bios i believe...and even then users weren't able to overclock by much....
on a side note: my Q9200 QAVS 2.4G is working like a dream and my temps are good...definitely recommend cpugenie as well. -
Problem is where is that OCable BIOS?
-
There never has been one.
