Hey all,
Any idea why just lately my laptop is taking forever and a day to shut itself down? It used to be super quick booting up, but is just okay or average speed now... and it used to shut itself down within 10 seconds maybe when I first started using it. When I shut it down, whatever it was I was doing has already had ample time to stop any running processes. I give everything time to close down before I select to shut windows down (I'm not one of these people who shuts it down with programs still open).
I can't imagine what is causing it to be completely slowed up but it is getting beyond the 4 minute mark to shut down sometimes!!! It's so frustrating, considering this is supposed to be a fast piece of kit... and was when I was first using it.

whats running in the background?
- antivirus suite?
- malware programs?
etc...
have you done a defrag of the HDD? -
Superfetch? I don't think this laptop can really boot faster than others, except if you tweaked services and startup apps. Try changing the Wait2kill timeout for services and apps.
-
Why would superfetch be causing shutdown time to lengthen? Perhaps try running Sysinternals' Process Monitor at shutdown (leave it running when you initiate shutdown and let it go as long as the system'll let it - if it goes by too fast, I think that it might also have the ability to create a log file that you could review after the fact), and see if you can identify which process(es) are hanging at shutdown time.

some entry level users find it hard to gauge what quality of software they are installing.. chances are you have set some thing up thats nasty running in the background.. like a scanner/protection/addware etc.
Or your a high level user and have Autodesk/Adobe support processes in the background that are compleatly normal and a side effect of high level use production tools <_> cry -
Thinking about it a little more, you might not be able to get a full read using Process Monitor because, if it's a well-behaved app (as it should be considering who wrote it), it should respond immediately to the shutdown signal. A better alternative might be to check in your event logs to see if there are any log entries about shutdown problems, as well as setting up a custom performance log that will log all shutdown events starting with the initiation of shutdown.

I had the same problem with my asus for a very long time. I found the problem to be the Defense + in the Comodo Firewall.
If you using it, I suggest removing the Defense + and keep the firewall. -
Well, I wouldnt class myself as an entry level user. I do have Adobe support stuff in my running processes as I do a lot of stuff in Adobe CS3 and Lightroom 2.
My anti-virus/security that's running is Kaspersky Internet Security latest edition.
M860tu Windows Shutdown is a complete slowdown!
