**Seems like alot of people are having trouble with memory stability. Instead of just changing cas in taiphoon burner, use the automatic flash settings set to 800-E. Of course this depends on you ram. My ram = Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 204-Pin DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500).

    Heat Sink Mod:

Added more heat sinks. I was suppose to add 8 more copper sinks but i somehow lost them. Applied heat sinks with arctic silver alumina @ 1 :1 :1(as5) ratio. Still very strong bond but you can still remove them if needed. Also, better thermal conductivity than pads. I did not lap cpu or gpu however. Never got around to doing it. Did switch from as5 to mx-3. Not sure if i notice too much of a difference yet. Also increased the size of the metal intake cover.

    Hard Mod:

Followed Milo.V 's guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=401682 for M86Otu hard oc mod.
Well, my first attempt to solder didn't go so well. The little metal piece near the clock generator fell off.
So I used pin8 instead and flashed memory "moral hazard helped me find pin8 and flash memory(thanks)". Everyone may already know this but in series you just add resistance. So i used 2 1kohm resistors from radio shack. Added some hot glue. Maybe too much :p.

    Stability:
Had to install xp32 to use Thaiphoon burner. First flash failed.
Second flash worked. After ram flash, system has been stable so far.(1066f ---> 800D in Thaiphoon auto settings). I first ran Orthos for 2 hours on blended with two instances(no errors).
Then i decided i would run Orthos on blended all night. Boredom stopped me at 4 hours (no errors). Max temp on processor @ 1.175v was 52C "for the 4hr test".

Welcome to NBR. Good first start, mmoerbe. +1 rep for you.

Be careful with your memory clocks. You're clocked 200MHz over the max rating of your GPU memory. Also, you may want to use copper instead of aluminium.

Thanks. I love the m860tu. Just wish I would have waited for the etu. Am I over by 200 MHz because of the fsb increase? Will upping the voltage all me to oc my gpu more?

No, it has nothing to do with juking the FSB. Your GPU memory is rated for a max frequency of 800MHz just as how my GTX 280M memory is rated for 1000MHz. If you are not careful, you will fry your GPU memory very soon.

Yes, raising the GPU voltage will allow you to overclock more, but I think 1.11v is the highest available to you already.

Nice introduction of yourself! Good job with the project so far. For some reason the 9800m gts is one heck of an overclocker. I had that in my old M860tu and I could remember It was fun overclocking that little sucker. But don't go too extreme like Soviet say. You may want to lower a little bit for longevity.

That would be the easiest way do it by using a bootable usb stick with the modded bios.

I notice in the pictures that you are using Aluminum RAM heatsinks on your CPU and GPU which are no good. You really want to use copper ones like these (as Soviet Sunrise mentioned), however I didn't notice significant temperature decreases when I tried either type. I got more temperature decreases after uncovering a vent on my backplate that had been left covered with silver tape. It was the vent near the CPU outlet.

I thought about using the copper ones. I just figured that the zalman ramsinks had more surface area to dissipate heat. I still have to add more but haven't figured out the best way to cut these sinks up. I also bought Arctic alumina thermal paste but im not sure if im going to use it. I know you can add AS5 to make it less permanent but still hesitant. Im also going to cut the backplate up. My backplate didn't have any tape covering a vent.

Nice job. Have you or are you considering lapping the cpu and gpu heatsinks as that may provide some extra degrees.

I'm planning on lapping them both. I am still trying to decide if I'm going to put all copper heatsinks instead and which ones to put. I played crysis last nite for 2 hrs straight and gpu reached 61c and CPU reached 56/54. Played at 1680x1050 on all low settings however(gpu 650/850/1700). I also installed
win 7 64bit. I got it for 15 bucks from school. Not sure if I notice any real improvements except startup time.

That is because the copper you get in those little bits are like 50-60% copper at best. You really want 98.7% pure copper when doing mods. Anything short of it and you are wasting your time.
I milled custom heatsinks out of it for my laptop. Just had it running 12hours at full load. Peak 93F, not bad

Props for doing a mod, always appreciate them whether they are good or bad. Work on your craft a little more next time, and you will get better at it.

may I also recommend 1/4" or 5/16" perforated steel rather than the 3/32" you are using. The size is the size of the holes. The larger the holes the less turbulence you get on the intake.

Ya, the steel i have on right now is temporary. I ripped it off of my NZXT cryo. New mesh on the way and I also ordered 16 http://www.enzotechnology.com/bcc9.htm . And my second back-plate came in so i can practice on this one. Had 3 exams this week so haven't had time to do much. Wish there was an alternate approach to soldering, like a soldering glue. Guess ill have to learn how.

Are you sure those aren`t too big? The other ones recommended in this thread are 5mm. The ones you linked to are 9mm. Although, I don`t remember how much clearing there are but it isn`t very much.

Finished backplate mod. Attempted to hard oc with solder mod but failed. I also increased the voltage on the gpu to 1.2 but wasn't able to oc it any higher. I am trying to figure out how to do a pll mod but not sure what i have to disconnect so it doesn't lock at lowest multiplier. Has anyone done a pll mod on a p45 yet?

I read your pll mod thread and was trying to decipher my service manual to figure out what i had to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for posting the pll for me.

Looks to me like you have to change the logic of FSLC (looks like pin 8) from 0 to 1 to get a 333mhz FSB.

Do you see a track comming from pin 8?

I really cant see it clearly.

There should be a mark in one of the corners of the PLL chip.
It might be a small circle which indicates which pin is pin1.
The you count the pins anti-clockwise until pin 8.

Then look at pin8 and see if there is a track comming off of it.
Then follow the track, it should hopefully lead to a resistor.

To get some clear photos, try focusing the camera at another point on the motherboard, making the PLL not in the centre of the photo.
    Also try using the flash.

And BTW, if your ram is unstable, which it probably is then I can help you get it stable.

    You can either use memset.
OR there is better software that can flash the SPD of the ram, letting you change the latencies and frequency of your ram.

Thaiphoon burner is the best, SPDtool is also good.

What's the problem when you run it?

Use ORTHOS to test the CPU on the "stress CPU" setting.
Also can you test with ORTHOS on the "blend" setting?

If it passes the "stress CPU" setting, but fails on the "blend" setting then you know the ram is unstable.

Otherwise if it fails the "stress CPU" setting, you need to give more voltage to the CPU.

I think there is a chance your ram is stable but your CPU doesn't have enough voltage.

You can give your CPU more voltage either with RMclock.
Or with a CPU pin mod.

I can help you with the pin mod.

So first thing you should do is find what is unstable.

Do you know what I would need to do to overvolt my QX9300 with a pin mod?

I installed the hardware overclock months ago, but it's unstable.

Tested on orthos and cpu passed. Ram failed. Thaiphoon doesn't run on 64 bit and i am not sure how to use spd tool. Also ran memtest which failed. Definitely memory.

Ok, from the official website, thaiphoonburner does support 64-bit.

I dont like SPDtool. It killed two of my ram sticks.

Thaiphoon burner is a million times better.

Please describe what happens when you run thaiphoon burner?

Did you run it as administrator?

Maybe you should disable UAC for a little while.
