Just like 2.2.4 you can use it to OC, but not monitor.

Lol. They don't update much and didn't take this opportunity to include 12.11 support?

It's not they, it's a he. He said there should be a 2.3.0 soon, he submitted to MSI for approval. You can find updates and current status at Guru3D Afterburner section.

MSI Afterburner also is Nvidia focused tool. It's been nice that it works with AMD products though.

Hmmm... maybe I'll try installing 2.2.4 or 2.2.5 when I get home; any time I try to OC with my current installation (2.2.1) I get a lovely BSOD. Of course, it could also be 12.11 beta that's causing the problem.

Yeah as Jaybee83 is asking, not all cards will OC the same. For example, above 1400 mem and 1020 core, mine will freeze up. Stable gaming for me is 1000/1400 right now, but for safe, I do 1000/1375. Others as you can see on this forum can do monster OC. Just luck of the draw. Maybe you can only do 900/1300, never know.

Pretty much any OC I've tried (even just a little bit) causes the good ol' atikmdag BSOD. I've been able to clock it high before (1000/1450 or more) but didn't do it often as I had really high temps. I've just got my card's temperatures under control and figured I'd try it again but, alas, no luck. It's not really a deal breaker for me though as this card is pretty sweet even at stock speeds.

To overclock, you NEED to run a detectable D3D/OGL app in the background (like 3DMark11, CoD4, Cinebench 11.5, [i tried 3dmark vantage, did not work, BSOD upon set clock, so you need another app running FIRST to set clock]).

Catalyst 12.11 is the best at lying to you. Previous versions would show Core/Memory clock at 0/0 MHz when a D3D/OGL app is NOT running, and show the correct clocks when a detectable app IS running.

But Catalyst 12.11 will display the correct clocks at all times, but this is a lie. Trying to set clocks without first keeping a detectable D3D/OGL app in the background WILL result in this infamous atikmdag.sys BSOD.

I haven't the need to run any 3D application to OC or have BSOD with 12.11 beta3, either on Win 7 or Win 8.

7970ms must be the lower-binned HD 7870s then. Some may end up being nearly as good though, like how the Phenom II X2 (based on X4 with 2 cores disabled) processors some times had all four cores accessible through the BIOS, essentially making them Phenom II X4s. The good ones will be more stable at a high overclock.

Hi there, i am new here but have been reading this forum for some time now (since i bought a Clevo P170EM with the Radeon 7970M).
I need some help in trying to overclock the 7970M.
Currently i am using the 12.10 drivers, because i couldn't resolve the BSOD with the 12.11 beta.
I installed MSI Afterburner 2.2.5 beta 1 (so it says in the software window), changed in the config file the EULA, went to registry and changed the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\001 - EnableULPS to 0
Reboot, but MSI Afterburner still shows the clocks at 0.
Following your tips, i shut down MSI AB, then started MSI Kombuster (but also tried a game), then ALT-TAB out of it and started MSI AB, but the clocks are still at 0 and i can't change them.
    What am i missing here?

Thank you all for your help,

EDIT: for some reason, now every time i change the EnableULPS to 0, reboot, and then try to start any 3D app, it crashes with the infamous BSOD...
Is there any other way to oveclock the 7970M? (without a bios flash)
    Thanks!

Sorry for keep getting back at this, but i tried something different: In the MSI AB config file, i choose "UnofficialOverclockingMode = 2" instead of "1".
I don't have the BSOD anymore, but the clocks are still at zero.
You can see that in the printscreen below. You can see that the graphs show the core and memory clocks, but i can't change them

You Sir, are a Genius!
After downloading and adding the 2 files to the AB main folder, i now can see the clock and memory values, and change them!
And i don't even need to change the EnableULPS in registry. I only have to change the EULA in the cgf file of AB, and start a 3D app, like Kombuster, to get the clock and memory values, and change them.

    Thank you very much! :)

Just as a side note 2.2.5 was just to add support for a single MSI graphics card.

2.3.0 is the next release to bring anything new to the table.

Just so you are aware, all advice on this forum is given as "do at your own risk".

He was kind enough to provide a method that had worked for him, most people don't even do that and you are not paying him for a service, so don't give that attitude to those who are trying to help.

Why don't you try apologising and then maybe people will listen to what you have tried and then suggest a solution.

Well as a follow up I was getting a BSOD because I didn't have any programs open that utilized the 7970... I opened Kombustor and was then able to overclock with ease! Woot woot!

set OC mode to 1, if u have any flickering or bsods while OCing, try 2 but be aware that on 2 the card wont downclock to idle clocks anymore.
OC EULA theres supposed to be some sentence along the lines of:" im aware that this is unofficial and i wont expect any support from msi" blah blah. better look up the exact wording ;)
the rest@registry is as has been described before, set all the ulps u can find inside the specific folder to 0.

    cheers
