I recently purchased a Malibal laptop off the forums here. It seems plenty fast for me right now but I am just curious to know how far I can actually take this machine.

    Currently it has

    i7 2760
    6990M
    8GB RAM
    256GB SSD
    500GB HDD

How far can I upgrade the GPU and CPU? Its been a while since I have done any upgrades with a laptop and I am not familiar with what is compatible.

I am considering selling the 6990M and getting a newer card that is comparable in performance yet stays a bit cooler. I will say, however, I am impressed with this older card! It has not failed me yet.

Should I consider getting more ram or faster ram?

Thank you for all your help!

For the CPU you can go up to the i7-2960XM, any i7-2XXXXM will work.
For the GPU the 7970M will work, the Guide littlecx posted will help you there. But for its price vs performance gain it may not be worth it.
You can add more RAM if you need more RAM but its pretty hard to use more then 8GB unless working with a ton or large files. You'll see minimal performance gains with faster speeds.

Are you sure? 7970M is heaps faster than 6990M...

Its a good ~60% increase in performance for sure. I guess it is up to the individual if you want to pay the price for that GPU and still be two generations behind.

7970m if you are price conscious op.
The 28nm of the 7970m will make it a cooler card than the 40nm oven of the 6990m.
I started with 6990m still have it but have the 680m and 7970m and they work great with latest titles. See sig.

The Cpu upgrades are not as desirable as the GPU cause the gains are not as value for money as the CPU.
    Good luck.

Thank you for the insight guys! Saved me much time!

I guess I will just keep it as is and maybe buy another laptop when its time. I don't really think I need more power and when I do it probably wouldn't be worth the upgrade.

    Thanks again!

Another question for you guys. If I sold my 6990M for say $250.00 ( Not sure if thats the right price ) what should I expect to spend on a 7970?

I'm really thinking about just selling the 6990M for $250.00 and getting a 7970M for $50.00 more... I've seen some go for $300.00 and I'm assuming I need a Dell/Clevo card. Am I right on this?

You need a Clevo card. Dell cards don't work in Clevo laptops. If you can get a Clevo 7970M for $300 I say go for it.

Same generation really if we are going to be picky, the difference between the M290X and the 7970M is marginal at best.

and it could even be in favor of the 7970M probably because there won't be any enduro issues nor turbo boosts to deal with - he can just oc the card to ~1ghz/whatever mem clock and it's PROFIT.

Depends which machine you compare it against, the dual card machines dont use enduro anyway but it will be close either way.

Well guys, I think I have decided to make a swap.

Going to try and sell my 6990M here on the forums and ebay. Could anyone help me come up with the proper description so I can get this listed?

Should I list it as a Clevo 6990M or? Not sure if I am right on that.

    Thanks for every ones help!
