The 203 was the first heatsink to ship on the 6990M. The 204 is the next rev of the heatsink.

The question I have is are the temperature differences really that big between the two? I'd like to know from Malibal, as it seems they've been testing temps.

    TIA.

Hmmm, I'm worried about what dabooosh posted on hitting 106C on the 203 heatsink...

Wondering if I should cancel my order now and wait for the 203 heatsink to get flushed out of the system and the 204 heatsink to start shipping... argh....

Really want the system but I've had a G73 that is always overheating, probably because I jumped on the first batch of them with the 5870 and now I'm getting nervous...

dabooosh, what temps are you getting? did you get IC7 paste or stock? Use 3d mark xx for benching, you can find them here download from Guru3D.com

    games are best for temps...

Furmark reports the card hitting 105 degrees.

CPUID reports the card hitting 106 degrees during 10 minutes of Metro 2033.

The first run of Furmark using the following settings and the laptop shut down after about 6 minutes.
    -Fullscreen
    -1920x1080
    -Dynamic Background
    -Burnin
    -Xtreme Burnin
    -PostFX

The second time I ran Furmark, I just used the 1080 Benchmark Preset and the test finished but the temperature reported 105 degrees.

What's weird is that GPU-Z was running and logging during this and never reported the temperature as having exceeded 62 degrees.

    Here's a screenshot.

Doh...the reason GPU-Z didn't report the higher temps is because I didn't have it set to log while running Furmark.

I just re-ran Furmark with GPU-Z set to log and sure enough it reported the temps hitting over 100. At one point, GPU#3 hit 112 degrees.

WOW that is scary high! I would not use Furmark anymore, these temps are too high and you risk damage. I can see why the laptop went into thermal shutdown. did you get IC7 thermal paste or stock? Are you using auto fan controls or are you using manual fin+1? whats the temp of your room?...

Malibal, we may have a problem here...what is your take on these temps?

Their take was to send dabooosh a couple PMs, and they pledged to ship him a brand new system. I wouldn't take these high temps to be what everybody should expect when they receive their 6990M GPUs though.

    Laptop was ordered with IC7.
Fans are working 100% and I've even tried the manual override (FN+1) which hasn't done anything to lower temps.

Malibal has sent me a BIOS that they want me to flash so I'm currently in the process of doing that.

BIOS? sounds more like a bad paste job or heatsink/GPU surface issue.. that's just me though...keep us posted :(

Hi Guys, we're getting the temps under control now - so please do not worry... we are going to send each customer who ordered an AMD 6990M a screencap of the temps on their notebook, so that you can all see them before your notebook even ships.

Hopefully this will help alleviate any anxiety you might have. :)

That's a nice gesture, Malibal. Thank you!

I am wondering though how a BIOS flash will help; did the BIOS and/or EC get modified by Malibal to keep temperatures in check? That's the only possibility I can see right now.

Malibal, What are the temp reductions for the -204 compared to -203. In other words is it worth waiting?

Decisions, decisions... I don't actually need my laptop before the second week of September, if the 204 heatsink actually makes any difference at all I could wait... but I've waited a couple weeks already. :D

Yes, but, they have another promotion going on that is arguably just as good!

I would also like to know the answer to that. Even though I've been impatiently waiting for my new laptop, I could wait a couple more days for a better heatsink, if it's worth it. Considering the free air shipping, it's even more tempting.
Is the free air shipping available to those who chose to wait for the -204 heatsink ?
Is the free air shipping available to Canadian customers too ? I'm currently having it shipped to the border, but if air shipping includes custom clearance I'd have it shipped to my door.

Yeah, I kinda need my laptop for school, but if the -204 heatsink does show evidence of lowering temps considerably, then I might consider going the first week of classes with no laptop.

Hi, we haven't tested with the 204 yet, so we cannot say how much difference it will make. However, we will be sure to update everyone as soon as we find out. Anyone who would like to wait for the 204 (which arrives next week) please open a ticket on our site and we'll add you to the list. Thanks!

Ahh.. Put myself on the 204 list. I see a lot of people with heat problems with the 203. Hope the wait is worth it. At least Malibal is offering some compensation. It'll be almost a month waiting next week. Oh well, I guess one more week can't hurt.

Also, in the words of mythlogic:

"You do have to remember that a heatsink isn't going to drastically change the temps any version of the heatsink. At best its going to be one degree or so at best. =) There's only so much copper you can throw at the problem."

I am unsure whether any redesign to the heatsinks can be very drastic. They have to bend and fit a certain way; 203 and 204 would probably look very similar. I thought I had seem a picture comparing the two before, but I guess I am just seeing things. :S

Going to agree with Confucius on this one. If you're crunched on time with how quickly you need your notebook I don't think the difference will be THAT noticable. However, if you're like myself, and are really in no hurry then you might as well wait a couple more days and get the newest if only to have it ;)

Yea, but I saw someone with lower temps on the 204. And it is the 203 reportedly with the problems, so I shall just wait I guess. A newer version can't hurt, hopefully.

Isn't vantage much more intense then actual gaming or fairly close? Anything under 85C is more than fine, and who knows how hot it is their? Thoughs temps don't seem so bad at all.

Nevada is hot, but thankfully there is air conditioning. Room temp for most people is 75F +/- 5F in most areas of the southwest. 100+ weather like outside would be unbearable to work in :D

Well, Malibal sent me some files to flash the BIOS but there were no changes. Temps still hit 105.

I just got off the phone with Malibal. The laptop is going to be RMA'd now and I will be sending it back tomorrow.

Happy to say by this time next week, I should have my new nVidia based, no heatsink or temperature problem laptop.

Good luck with your laptops fellas. May your headshots be true and your gpu temps low.

I asked to wait for the -204. With the free Next-Day air shipping, I'll only get the laptop 1-2 days later than I initially expected. It's 5 business days with UPS ground! The free ram upgrade is also a nice touch. Too bad I already paid for IC7.
I'm not that stressed over temps, since I've had GPUs running around 90 before, and I took the 2 years parts warranty.

I also just received the Fujitsu T2010 I ordered monday on EBay, so I have a new gadget to tide me over until next week. I couldn't resist how cheap it was. ($149 + shipping + taxes) And I can't resist talking about it.
