So I'm pretty sure my HD Radeon 6990m graphics card is fried!! :(.... Last night(24 hours ago) I turned my laptop off. Tonight, I turned it on, launched Rift, and my laptop got all messed up, color was distorted, chunks of colors all over the screen, looked really bad. Then, blue screen... couldn't read anything as it was all jumbled and just messed up. I tried other games, same thing. Also launched furmark just to see, and that does the same thing. Now I can't launch any games or pretty much do anything!! What can I do? my laptop's warranty ended a few months ago, back in December, I think. Can Malibal help me with this problem even though my warranty is out? I have tried reformatting, updating drivers, using older drivers, etc. my computer has nothing on it right now other than drivers and furmark, and some updates from windows.

    My specs are:
    i7 processor 2630
    hd radeon 6990m
    8gb ram
    500gb hd
    120gb ssd

    any help is appreciated :(

have you tried connecting an external monitor to see what's displayed?

If launching games breaks it I think it might be his card indeed. Those cards had a high failure rate from what I heard. Malibal COULD help you, if they wanted to. But you'd likely need to pay for a new card entirely. If Malibal doesn't want to help, I believe Mythlogic has in the past offered to help users with new parts/upgrades off-warranty. But either way, you'll have to pay for the new stuff. Try the external screen too though, see if that artifacts as well.

Oh yes, have you tried flashing your vBios? Sometimes a new video card bios can fix problems like that. It's worked in the past for two of my friends' GTX 560Ti cards, so it might work for you (though AMD is different from nVidia). So try that, then the external screen, then if both things fail, contact Malibal. If they don't want to help, Mythlogic might help you.

can you take a picture of your screen using a phone and post it on here.
as mentioned it could be a dying graphics card but after 13 months that shouldnt really be happening but like any electrical equipment, its possible.
did you ever overclock at all?

i was going to suggest that you could use who crashed from my signature below to give the bsod dump report but if your screen is totally messed up the only way to view the dump report is to run an external monitor. if that shows exactly the same screen glitches then its defo a fried graphics card and the only two options is either buy a new one or try the baking method but only as a last resort when you know the card is dead.

Hey guys thanks for the replies! I'll try to answer everything, somewhat hard to read as there's white lines horizontally across my screen now..

I haven't tried with an external display, so I will today at some point. I'll also have to look up the vbios thing as I'm not sure how to do that/what it is(I'm not too tech savvy).

Haven't overclocked my laptop ever, I treat it like a baby as it's a 1500$ piece of hardware, lol. Haven't dropped it or anything. When I'm done using it, I put it in a case and put it in a cabinet, so it should be safe(the cabinet is level with the floor just in case).

I contacted Malibal through a ticket last night, amazingly, even though the support was offline, I received a response saying that my warranty is up, and they gave me that link to cooking my graphics card, said to use that as a last resort.

I just remembered that when I bought the laptop, I used an American Express card that doubles the length of a warranty, so I'll be calling AE tomorrow to see what to do.

Here are a few pics of the screen and what it looks like now

    edit:

also, it no longer happens with just games. It is permanently like this, even after a fresh install of windows, old driver, new driver, no updates, all updates. I tried loading a game on facebook up and when i hit "play", i got a blue screen. pretty sure it's the graphics card :(

ohh look at them pretty pictures :(

seen a few posted like that before and im sure they were dying graphics cards, heres mine below. ScreenShot079.jpg

not sure but does the HM model have intergrated graphics (not sure what its called with ati cards).
if it does try removing your ati graphics drivers and reboot. if it still happens with the im guessing HD3000/4000 then your well and truly buggered and the oven seems the only option.

Damn :(. The HM's graphics are dedicated, I tried removing the drivers again just now and it is the same. The only difference though, is that now, I can start up in "normal mode" rather than "Safe mode with networking", lol. Last night, when I started the laptop, it would boot up, get a blue screen when it tried loading normal mode, and I'd have to go into safe mode.

I'm gonna probably check out using my external monitor today, when I decide to bring it out of my bedroom. Probably cook my graphics card along with Easter dinner( :p )lol.

I doubt I'll get a replacement part from a website, probably just go a few weeks without a good laptop and just buy a new one when I get the money(missing launch of Defiance, ugh.)

Defiance isn't THAT amazing right now, so don't feel too bad about missing the launch. I hope you get a warranty card, or if they would allow it ask for an nVidia replacement XD. At least it'll be very likely to last longer. As for the new laptop, again good luck with that.
    ...
Oh. You're with Malibal. REALLY good luck on getting a replacement card.

If it is the card, and it looks like it is, it's probably better just getting a new one rather than getting a new laptop. A 675mx, 7970m or 680m would all work in there, and give you better performance than you currently have. It's not hard to find them.
    Good luck with AE though.

Yeah, not expecting malibal to help, going to go through my credit card(they extend warranties and replace/refund items like this)...

The thing about just a new card is that I'm seeing cards online for $570 including shipping. Can get a new laptop for 1200-1300, hard to justify just getting a new graphics card. I'll probably get one though, if my credit card company won't help much

I hope your CC warranty works. There have been a lot of reports about the 6990m dying. You can try baking it, but if your covered, get a new card, and not another 6990m. Best of luck.

I had the same card go bad and replaced, but then the replacement went bad after warranty. Needless to say Malibal is worthless for any support. I'd highly advise against buying from them.
