ok guys since a member here ask me how i manage to lower the temps on the HD5870 on the clevo 870cu
after you trim the aluminum cage like Quadzilla say to allow the heat sink to do better contact you also need shims under the lift springs of the gpu heat sink
they can be made of any kind of sheet metal some like this [IMG]

the shims just help to put more pressure on the gpu die ,for the thermal paste don't worry about it could be any kind i try a lot of different brands and get the same result

    @ witcher4360

What are you using to show your GPU temps in game?

I found Rivatuner was not showing mine unless they have an updated version I missed?

I know that if you have riva tuner installed and you check out the video bios in RBE it will offer to update riva tuner to work with the 5870m.

The last time I tried, it did not work really well with the MR5870...

It is sort of a spiritual successor to Riva Tuner, as the guy who wrote RT produces MSI's Afterburner. I'm not even sure he is still updating Riva Tuner.

yes it is a rivatuner succesor and is working on the hd5870 with the 10.4 catalyst drivers
when you enable monitoring on Afterburner it opens a new program to enable the onscreen display :)

Is there a more viable solution to lower the temps?

    1. Download AMD GPU Clock Tool for HD5870. http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1641/AMD_GPU_Clock_Tool_v0.9.26.0_For_HD_5870.html

    2. Set clocks to Engine=250, Memory=300, click Set Clocks

    3. To automate the downclocking process at bootup, create a shortcut to Clock Tool, then right click, select Properties and add the following to the command line contained in the Target box: “-eng=250” “-mem=300” (with quotation marks). Then drag the shortcut (as modified) into the Startup Folder. At boot, Clock Tool starts up, resets the clocks and exits. Happens so fast you can barely see it. Opening Clock Tool and clicking Restore Default Clocks takes you right back to 700/1000 or whatever other values you have set in the vbios.
