Hi all. Depending on circumstances, I may be buying a laptop soon. The aforementioned brands are ones I would consider, and generally have computers in my price range ($900-$1100) with specifications that match what I want. However, I cannot seem to find a single model (except the barebones MSI 937-165141-011, which I cannot find to buy anywhere) that has a matte screen. I recall there used to be matte options, but can't find current ones anywhere (I've primarily been searching retailers such as powernotebooks.com and xoticpc.com). This isn't quite a dealbreaker, but the deal would have to be awfully good otherwise.

So are there any matte options out there these days for these brands? 16:10 is a plus, too.

edit: Might as well ask this here, too. The one option that is tempting despite being glossy is this Asus from powernotebooks.com. 5730, Core i7, just over $1000 - awfully good. But there's no "no OS" option. Is this just a special requirement for this model? Even with Windows 7 included, it's an amazing deal, but I've never seen an OS puchase requirement at powernotebooks before.

    I found this old article:

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2549

Even in 2005 they were calling matte the "screen of old" so based on what I've seen from retailers it seems to be phased out or going out.

As for o/s deals, I believe some manufacturers worked out deals with MS to include their o/s. I think Asus is one of those. I personally like the no o/s option as I like to build it myself sans manufacturers bloated software installs.

I'm sure others here might have more definitive answers.

    Good luck on your purchase!

Most consumer laptops are going to have a glossy screen mainly because those laptops are for multimedia/gaming/photos, etc. It makes everything more vibrant.

What I would do is purchase a business-class system which will generally come with a matte screen. It would have a business GPU but that's all based on the drivers. You can actually have the drivers tweaked so they are more inline for gaming.

Thanks for the responses. I figured the Asus Win7 requirement was something on Asus's side rather than powernotebooks, as it seemed to apply to all the Asus models but no others. If someone does happen to see a matte MSI/Sager/etc., please post it! - I saw Donald post about a shipment that powernotebooks received back in 2008, but that's well out of stock now.

Indeed the business-class systems are ones I'm looking at a lot. The Dell Precisions and ThinkPad T-series have what I'm looking for screenwise and specwise, but I suspect a Sager/Clevo/MSI could be an even better fit if the screen were what I wanted.

You could always just upgrade it yourself, get the cheapest option when you order it and then upgrade it to a matte screen after you get it. Zfactor can usually get his hands on just about any screen, you might try sending him a pm.

Bonus points for Zfactor - the lcd screen god, if ever there was one.
