I've got flight controls for FSX, USB keyboard, mouse chip, Spyder3 Elite sensor and laptop cooler. I don't want to swap anything out. When I tried to use some devices piggybacked on the laptop cooler plug they didn't work (passthru). Therefore I presume I need a hub. Powered? in any event, will either kind of hub allow any/all of those devices to function normally when connected to a hub rather than directly to my Sager 8130 laptop?

As long as the hub is self powered you'll be fine 99% of the time.

ah, so being powered is what makes it more compatible as far as working with most peripherals? could I trust it for massive data transfers from USB HDD's, also?

That looks great. Plenty of extra power.

awesome! thank you , HT and 76! It's in my "cart" and now I have to find the correct firewire (4pin to 4 pin) cable for my camcorder. the cable that I have has the usual large end and the 4 pin on the other.

Not that it makes it more "compatible" its just USB 2.0 Standard is rated at 500mA, and USB 3.0 is 900mA. So now imagine trying to run all those devices on only 500mA or 900mA :D

The USB hub may only work while plugged in, just a heads up, i have one that is that way. Sounds like you'll be at your desk while all your peripherals are plugged in anyway.
Your firewire cable may be a 6 to 4 pin, the 6 pins provide power as well vs 4 pin just data.

It's also handy to have as you can make all your peripherals just one USB plug in and you are set to go if you take it away from the desk.
