I have an D900F, one of the older models that could not upgrade to the GTX 480M, so I am turning it into a server for home use. Sitting at home on my desk, it has been a lot more stable than any other PC I have ever built!
Recently I have bought three 12.5mm 1TB hard drives, one was installed with ease into the dual hard drive bay, the other installed with some caution under the battery, I just wouldn't put a tall hard drive under the battery if the D900F were to travel, but mine will stay at home.
Feeling frustrated that I could not use the third hard drive, I looked into other options, and found many talking about swapping the optical drive with a extra hard drive bay. And I found some website called new mode us .com that seems to specialize in such adapters for laptops, they have two or three models for Clevo\Sager laptops, so I bought one and will find out of it works.
What I want to know is, how many people have tried swapping out their optical drive for an extra hard drive?
When it comes to the D900F that uses the Intel X58 chipset with the ICH10R bridge, and from what I understand a special bios that may or may not limit the X58\ICH10R functionality? If you count all possible SATA connections, would the laptop come out to a total of 5 sata ports? All 5 are connected to the ICH10R? Does any one know if the laptops bios will include a hard drive connected to the optical drives sata port?
Thanks, JADabandon.

Why can't you upgrade to the 480m? What is it about the older models that makes it so you can't upgrade the GPU? I am getting a used D900F purchased in Sept 2009 and am wondering if I will have the same issue....

You need a caddy for putting a hdd instead of the dvd. What happens if you remove the case part which covers the secondary bay?
I own one 1TB hdd and installed Windows 7 on it. Everything was horrible slow, booting, loading, copying small files. Now I keep it for movies only.
Maxing out D900F storage space.
