cant really help much as im still running 32bit on mine as its only a backup for emails now but the user manual says it can only take a maximum of 4gb ram.
when this laptop was released in 2008 64bit was hardly used by anyone and a lot of hardware would not work with 64bit so im guessing that is why it only shows max 4gb

there are plenty of techies on here that always experiment to push max spec laptops past their recommended spec so hopefully someone else will be able to advise on a bios update that will accept more ram.

Will it boot with either stick by itself?

What is your BIOS and EC firmware version? This model can definitely do 8 GB.

It might just be the 8 gig modules, you should be ok with 4GB modules though.

Counter-intuitively, brand might be an issue. I once upgraded an M570 with the cheapest ram and it failed at post too. One major reseller told me that some models were fussy that way and sold me some 'tried and tested' brand sticks, which sure enough worked. Though I obviously can't prove the first batch weren't just faulty...

Yes, that's what I meant. :) 8 GB total. Unfortunately a QVL for memory is hard to come by for this model, so brand is harder to nail down, although it's not terribly specific. What brand are you trying to use?

I am not sure there are no brand marks on the chips or labels I just have the specs from the seller I will have to try another try to get a good one I guess

I ordered some gskill pc3 8500 sodimm and installed it my notebook booted right up third times a charm, anyway I can see a difference with the extra memory just what it needed.
if I get brave I may try a couple sticks of 8gb of same brand if I can find it but I will wait a while run this. hope that helps someone else my signature shows the model ram 8gb.

8GB is a good match for the notebook, annoying it wont take more but it's should not limit the machine really.

Hi, I was also able to run 8gb, there are some posts that show the m860tu being based on the Montevina platform, can take as much as 16gb. I use a pair of g-skill ddr-3 1333 ram it just down-clocks to 1066. No Problems so far, and since i might try to overclock my bus speed eventually (via jumper mod) so i can have a bit of headroom when overclocking the ram also.

I also wanted to try out a pair of 16gb sticks but at that time i was still using a 32-bit version of vista that runs Patch PAE so i was still able to use all of the 8gb, but it it runs slightly slightly slower. Switching to 64 bit win7 made a difference, feels quicker and more stable.

A pair of 16GB sticks wont work since not even current intel CPUs will work with those sticks.
