Say the HD 8000M series comes out under a new "MXM 4.0" specification. Once Clevo makes their own special versions, would they technically be usable in the current NP9150/NP9170 notebooks with proper BIOS support and such, or are MXM slots limited to their number specification, and not capable of using cards of a newer specification?

Well mxm 3.0 had a completely different connector to mxm 2.1.
But I don't see any info online yet for MXM 4.0 (if they end up calling it that), so there is no way to be sure about it. -
There is no MXM 4.0 for now. Only MXM 3.1.

Thanks for that.
Here is a good post:

That sounds amazing! Just like how PCI-E 2.0 cards work in PCI-E 1/1.1 slots. I'm super excited now
My question is, do we know at this point if the EM series has the 3.1 slot, or is it still secret despite the fact that many of us have our machines? -
There is a 90% chance they are MXM 3.0 . Later this year, maybe autumn, there might be a Mobo revision with MXM 3.1 . Next year's model will certainly be 3.1.
Resellers could tell us if this is so or not, since they have the service manual... -
No news whether future models will be MXM 3.1 yet though, but its a good chance
Mxm 4.0?
