    Hello,

model:Sager NP8170/p170hm bought it last year january.

My 6990m just died after a year and a half.. much sooner than expected. At first i thought it was system driver incompatibility issue because it went back to normal after a system restore. Then i was reinstalling windows 8 and my 6990m died on me half way. So the installation was half done, as a result i cannot go into recovery mode to retrieve w/e i had on th laptop on my sub drive. I'm having a exam in just two days and all my notes and stuff r stuck in there... I need some immediate help. I went into setup but there isnt a way to switch to onboard graphics.

Other than that, i will be leaving in a week on a trip. I need my laptop with me. I'm considering replacing the graphic card, but there isn't any place selling mobile gpus nor sager reseller near me. im screwed.... just 2 days after an ipad replacement.. my graphic card dies..eww

I need some advice and some ways to boot with onboard graphics and i have no idea what cards will work on this laptop. >.>

Can i also have a list of what gpu works on the np8170? does mid range cards or the latest 8970m/780m work on the np8170? does gpu off alienware work on sager laptops?

Is it usual for gpus to die after only a year and a half usage? (i used as a mobile desktop, only bought out maybe twice a year, kept in good condition on a coolmaster u3) because my older laptops/computers gpus lasted at least over 3 years.

    Thanks

bit rushed as at work but will try to help

what makes you think the gpu died. were you getting artifacts or lines on the screen before this happened.
it could well be the hard drive but this is all guess work as we need more info

what is your system spec. cpu/gpu/ram/hdd/ssd
did you buy direct from sager or a reseller and has your warranty run out.

    2760qm/6990m/intel320 189gbssd with 750gb hard drive /16g ram

My screen began shaking all of a sudden. Then my screen became distorted and cut in half. Left Side being displayed on right side and right side be displayed on left side. It occurred after system boot up when the driver kicks in. It went away after a system restore. Then I was doing a reinstall and died during half way. Now it just black screen after the window logo when system boots up.

At first I thought it could be something wrong with the screen but it displays normally when I attempted to enter safety mode. But failed cuz I'm half way through my installation.

Edit: out of 1 year warranty. I'm in Canada so there isn't any retailer here. I bought it off reflex notebook. I asked for a quote on a new gpu, but I wonder if MSi and dell cards will work on the Clevo. If mid range cards work too, then will just get one as a placeholder. And get a new card when I'm back from my trip.

not heard of split screen before.
failing half way through a reinstall sounds more like the hard drive.

as far as reports suggest dell gpu's will not work in clevo lappys even after a bios flash.

i think the only way to boot just on HD internal graphics is you have to remove the dedicated gpu first.

sorry a bit rushed as manic at hospital today. hopefully someone else can advise further.

This is now the 11th case of a 6990M dying in this fashion around the 18 month mark I have heard about lately, including my own. Not enough to be a trend I suppose... but it's a bit odd.

The hard drive is fine. It boots I can still do another install. I remember reading something about it won't boot without a dedicated graphic card inserted. Do you have some info on this?

And thanks for the help ^^

Just to confirm without a working GPU reporting temps the EC panics and shuts the machine down.

The HM does not have the IGP connected to any display outputs anyway.

Thanks. I guess will need to get a new card. What card works on the HM? Since the old cards are out of production.

Get a 7970m. Jaybee has a guide on installing the 7970m on HM series clevos somewhere here just do a search. The 680m is another option but $$$$. As for the latest and greatest 780m and 8970 asta lavista baby.

Have to keep an eye out for 770M compatibility since it's working on the older machines of other brands.
