I like the bigger monitor for gaming, despite its lower res.

LOL. I've done that before, except I usually close the laptop screen as I sometimes get pretty pissed gaming and tend to throw things. :D

Can I close the screen without sending it to sleep mode?

Indeed. Just go into power options and select it to "do nothing" when the screen is closed.

But make sure when you do this that you either have the LCD on the laptop turn off after a reasonable amount of time so that you don't have the screen just sitting there on your keyboard for hours on end. >.< lol

The screen automatically turns the backlight off when closed. This is by hardware design.

If you don't need to close it, I don't see why you should. Sure it was designed to be able to be closed and still cool effectively, but I don't see a good reason to stress it anymore than it needs to.

of course. just go into the power options in windows and select "do nothing when closing lid", or something like that. in fact, i highly recommend you keep the lid closed at all times for your application because something can easily hit your screen while gamining or whatever. i used to do the same thing with my older d900t. i would use it as a portable desktop. come home from work with it, plug it into all the accesories and external large monitor and off i was. :D

would closing the screen somehow affect the heat in anyway? i always had the impression that closing the screen makes the laptop hotter becuase its more 'compact'... =/

Nope. Cooling takes place in the chassis below the keyboard - heatsincs and fans blowing heat out the back. The screen doesn't really generate much heat, and as noted above - the hardware turns the LCD off when it's closed anyway. I always shut mine when connected to an external monitor - unless I'm running it as dual-monitor (extending my desktop between the laptop screen and external monitor)

I just change the resolution when I plug in to my external monitor.
