Getting loads of strange artifacts (horizontal lines) all over the screen of my M860TU, even during boot-up. Have re-installed gfx driver (301.42) to no effect.
Cannot start vista normally as it automatically reboots, so I'm trying to write this in safe mode (with artifacts!).
What are my options ?
I've read about baking the cards, but I'm not a good cook - usually prefer to pop down the chippy!

hi
if your getting the same as picture below then welcome to the club and rip 9800gt (your lucky its lasted this long).
mine died last march and luckily i was still covered by extended warranty so got it replaced free with a 260gtx
your only options now are either look for a 260 that are scarce and can cost upto £300 or learn to cook by checking out the links below.

you could check out the nbr market place where someone might be selling parts > NBR Marketplace
or lastly check out this clevo service centre > clevoweb, the one stop source for all clevo and clevo brankded product spares and repairs

Hey Mr DJ, thanks for the info. I'm in safe mode and there are thousands of tiny horizontal white lines all over the screen. These briefly disappear when I move my cursor over them, then re-appear when I scroll the web page.
Just wondering if it could be a memory or other issue ? -
so its not like my attached picture.
if youve tried a few drivers then i would recommend trying the most stable ever since our m860tu came out 186.81
its 3 years old now but if this doesnt stop the artifacts then i dont think any will > 64bit NVIDIA DRIVERS 186.81WHQL
you could also try mem test to check your ram http://hcidesign.com/memtest/ -
You could also try taking out memory sticks one at a time to see if any one is faulty. I also had similar symptoms with an nvidia 8600gt, but you might be lucky and have one of the few of that series that survives.
-
No it doesn't look like that. The laptop still seems to behave as normal apart from the thousands of minute lines and not liking to boot up to vista. Think I'll try the memory test after the football.
-
Nope its dead alright.. a mem stick wouldn't produce vertical lines
A new laptop should do it if your funds can survive -

Can you still see any post screen?
One way to test it: move the screen back and forth couple times. If the lines disappear at certain angles, it could be your LCD/LED data cable is broken.
If the lines remains unchange, it shall be your LCD/LED broken.
The chance of your vga card is broken is less than 5%. Try to connect to an external monitor to see if there are lines. If you see the lines on external monitor, it is the vga card.
Good Luck! -
Tried the memory test, and booted into wndows. Everything fine for about 15 minutes. Then had slight artifacting, 'driver has stopped responding' then black screen and crash - manual reboot. This happened a further 4 or 5 times. So I decided to roll back to 285.62 which I had handy and its been fine ever since ... and my team won too!
Result.
I remember there was a Java update recently - wonder if that could have caused problems with 301.42?
Thanks for all your advice, I'll check out mysn when I next plan to upgrade in about 6 months time. -
great news.
ive still got old faithful m860tu sitting next to me and imo so far its been the best laptop ive ever owned.
