    im running vista ultimate

under "Computer" it lists only the harddrive...

i just noticed it today when i went to visit someone in the hospital, i brought my computer so we could watch a dvd when i noticed it wasnt showing up. the dvd drive appears under device manager with the "theres a problem" symbol. under properties it reads:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

neither checking for solutions or searching for driver updates accomplishes anything.

    help!

    in your Device Manager,
-right-click and uninstall your "Secondary IDE channel"

then go to Action > Scan for new hardware.

Hopefully that wil force windows to re-detect and configure the optical drive.

ah I see.... you are using AHCI.

    try this first:
    http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/windows-vista-–-missing-cddvd-rom-drive/

    then this:
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/...disappears-after-enabling-ahci-mode-in-vista/

    then if that didnt help...

first uninstall Daemon Tools.... because it will get conflicted on whats going to happen next.

second, right click on your Optiarc DVDRW and Uninstall it.

then go into your BIOS and switch SATA mode to IDE Mode.

go into Windows.... through Safe Mode first.... by pressing F8 as the system is booting.

(in Safe Mode) check if the optical drive is working again in the Device Manager.

Then restart and go into BIOS again, and switch SATA mode back into AHCI.

    that should do it.
