    Greetings, Sager Owners.

I've been had my 8660 since September 08, and been using it every single day for anything you can imagine.

    - Music and Video edtiting
    - Gaming ( DUH :p )
    - Surfing
    - Programming and scripting
    - running the od server now and then
    - Pr0n ..

And I can go on and on, so far I've been pretty pleased about it's performance, my configuration can be found in my sig.

However, the temps for me have been an eyesore even tho for sutch an high performance machine its "relatively" cool, I feel some parts including the HDD can be cooler.

Let me get to the point, I basicaly did this to my baby:

As you can see, I coverd the fan vent, cut a hole centerd above the HDD and also coverd the CPU and Chipset air holes.

    Dude..?! why?!?!

Well after cutting a hole above the HDD, there still was little to no airflow around that area so temps never really changed at all, so I tought I'd try an experiment with new possible airflow solutions. My intention and prediction can be seen on this pic:

Sidenote, the right palm heat isn't entirely the HDD's fault.I've found that the Wifi module and the RAM get real hot (In my case) and they are located in the right palmrest area as displayed on this pic:

    Result's

This screenshot below shows the min and max temp, max temp was by a 2 hour long run of Left 4 Dead survivor runs.It truly stresses out the GPU/CPU/HDD by rendering 100's of zombies explosions bullets flying around at anygiving time.

In the same picture I'm doing a semi idle common use stress test, Listening to music played from my HDD,playing a 720p anime episode and extracting a 4.7GB bluray onto the same HDD all while browsing ramdom site's.

True idle temps, surfing listening to mp's and writing this post:
    1 hour of Assassins Creed DX10 @ 1680x1050
    [IMG]

In comparison to before I modded the chassis and unducktaped airvents these are my new temps.

    Max temps

CPU max temps dropped by ~8-10 °C
GPU max temps dropped by ~1-3 °C
HDD max temps dropped by ~8-10 °C

    Idle temps
CPU idle temps dropped by ~5-7 °C
GPU idle temps dropped by ~6-10 °C
    HDD idle temps dropped by ~10 - 12 °C

    Conclusion, general findings and notes

In overall my 8660 feels cooler, even during gaming the right palm rest doesn't heat up to any noticable heat.
The airflow suction that's being vaccumed thru the keyboard feels pleasant.
I'm satasfied with the current modification and tape placings but I still have a todolist

-Cover the HDD hole with something to prevent dust getting sucked in
    -Try out more tape mods
-Eventually replace the tape by aluminium or coper plating ( I'm in for suggestions )
-Might drill one more smaller hole
    -Get a notebook cooler
    -Run more stress tests ( Crysis,UT3,Assassins Creed,Sisandra,3Dmark06)
-Oc CPU to 2.73 and compare to 2.5 GHZ temps
    -Get some OCZ freeze

*I've been monitoring temps everyday since september 08
    *I'm using Windows 7 x64 7077
*My L4D settings are 1680x1050 all settings maxed, MSAx4 AAx8
*Ambiant temps 8-10 ish outside, so around 15-18 ish inside
    *Nvidia drivers are Dox 185.68
*I don't have that vista HDD driver fix
*Laptop is on a flat polished wooden surface
    *No notebook cooler
*CPU is undervolted @ 1.0875V stable for 2 weeks w/o BSOD
*GPU is stock clocked, might try a OC
    *Cost 0$
    *????
    *profit

    Slight disclaimer:
    - If sutch a thread has already been made mods feel free to merge.
    - Sorry for my english :p
    - I've never made a big post like this before O_0

Any idea's/comments to improve/make it look better and what to use to cover the hole are appreciated

Wow, thanks for that write up! That mod looks like the one Gophn shared a while back ( link), but with some airflow work! Got to love duct tape! ;)

I just ordered a new bottom panel and I am going to try and do something similar to what you guys did and hopefully bring down my temps a bit. I was thinking of getting some light mesh screen material from Home Depot or Lowe's for the hole though.

Keep us updated on those stress tests you plan on doing!

Wow, think you want to get some electrical tape so it doesn't look so blatant?

But of course, I will try this, especially since without a notebook cooler you are getting those temps :)

last picture, right side of the icons, third icon from the bottom "16"

might want to delete that one before posting the picture.. ;)

unless of course you have more to share.

    nice temp drops though.

Haha, that one and the word document below it have definitely aroused my curiosity! ;)

In the second pic, backside2, are those vents on the top left of the bottom panel open to the inside of the computer? Because on my 8662, they are closed!!

    :p

Haha, no worries GrxOne, I was just giving you a hard time and I am pretty sure pbcustom98 was too! ;)

So your vents are open up there too huh? I wonder why the 8662's are closed. I wonder if that was Clevo's attempt at improving airflow or something.

Forgot to ask, what did you use to cut the hole??

    :p

why dont you simply get some super thin metal like aluminum or similar and spray it matte black then use a very small amount of glue from inside the panel and glue it down over the vents. that would look far batter.. but overall nice. i didnt similar to my ocz but made 3 holes and i covered them from inside with super fine black mesh screen to act as a filter

Had it done at the place where I work, they used some kinda hollow saw drill honestly wouldn't know what to call it.

Eventually I'll make it look better, just is just for testing purposes really.
Imagine if I just closed w/e I liked with a alu mesh and all, only to find that that temps in some area's (dramtically) increased.

I just find ducktape the safest way to on the fly test different airflows :p

Ducktape - the miracle product! I sometimes think that if God had had ducktape at the beginning, He might have finished up putting the Universe together in two days rather than six, and could have taken five days off to rest instead of just one! :p

I happen to know a great source for the aluminum mesh you are thinking of using. http://www.dragonmodz.net they have a wide selection of sizes and hole patterns. you might want to give it a look. It truly is amazing what a person can do with duct tape :D
