Ok guys, heres some feedback about my Sager 8760 thats Ive received about a month ago.
quick specs: icore7 820, 4gigRam, 7200rpmHD, 280gtx 1gb.
Pros:
-Fast! Good replacement for my gaming desktop. I merged work and gaming on one machine. No more big fat ugly computer furniture laying around in the house. I do everything in my office now.(in my basement, I work from home )
-Sun and sound: This laptop + big fat home theatre (also in the basement right in front of my desk) = Awesomness
-Screen : Very good quality. Image is picture perfect.
-Keyboard doesnt make much noise. Although it could have been better.
Upgrades Easily upgradable!
Cons
-Web cam: we are back to 1998 standards!! I cant recognize myself. Daddy is it you?
-Keyboard: You have to press medium-hard or you're gonna miss alot of keys when you type fast like a girl. This quickly became a problem for me so sometimes i switch for the wifi keyboard, with better layout anyay.
-Noise: Too much. I was expecting noise but not that much. I think i would be ashamed to sell this kind of quality product with such noisy fans. You can press a button that will reduce noise but its gonna shut down one fan and your laptop will get hot...Even with the button pressed, its still too much anyway.. I left it on idle the other day and the neighbour called the police.
Speakers : Twice I opened my laptop and almost destroyed the speaker part thats right under the monitor... It kinda 'dislocated' (sorry im french) from the computer a little bit (got out of his socket at one end) when the laptop was closed (with the monitor flipped down), probably some pressure from my hands when moving it around or getting it out of the bag...So when I opened it , the speaker was in the way and almost entirely poped out of the laptop...TWICE.Thats quite unusual and a bit scary..I now have to inspect the laptop before opening it. I am VERY VERY cautious with my stuff...i could imagine anyone who doesnt care much moving this laptop alot without breaking something..
VGA No VGA socket? I know I should have known that when looking at the specs but hey, I never thought you could buy a pc without vga nowadays. So long the vga only monitor... Replaced by a 21" coming right from the gaming desktop.
Biostuff The finger print security system bugged so many times that I had to remove it... well, actually it removed itself at some point without me doing anything. This should be in the Pros section.
Weight I used to drive a car now I drive a truck so I can bring my laptop. My friend last night got stuck in mud so I brought my laptop and put it in the back of his pick-up. Gave him alot of traction and he got out easy.
Conclusion : I still wouldnt change it cause I believe its still a great computer but its got some flaws that needs to be adressed ... at least I know I'll be looking for these problems next time I buy a laptop!
On a side note, I bought the computer from Pc Torques and got an amazing service. I highly recommend. They shipped to Canada fast and everything was easy. Thanks!![]()

Typing is fast and accurate on mine...

People say that about the Asus also. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with typing style. Considering I work for a college maybe it's time I take a typing class or something.
Edit: BTW, the keyboard looks very similar.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
I didnt have that problem with the Compaq laptop I had right before this one. I type alot and its the first time I miss that many keys when typing.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
You work for a college too?
Must be a busy man. -

I coded a program to disable the touchpad. It's called Self Control 1.2 and Proper Typing Ergonomics Professional. They're in Russian though.

You wrote that software?!
I have been using it for years

On a side note, the weight of this laptop is LESS than the G73. And the G73 is light as a feather for a 17"er. W TF? -

Weight should be in the Pros. It's remarkably light for a 17" powerhouse, the only thing lighter that's comparably powerful is the MSI GX740. If you want something light and portable, go with the W860CU. That's what it's there for.

Well, its the "goods and the bads". lol
What do you expect? -

More like the good, the bad, and the stupid. I don't think Karass has described the function of silent mode for this notebook accurately.
-
Karass just expected the system to do more than just lower fan speeds, and she should since she paid that much $$$$ for her notebook. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
That's the thing. The system does downclock the processors when it is active. Karass is somehow saying that it doesn't, which is not how silent mode functions on this machine. I don't know if he has a new BIOS, which I doubt because the latest release as of this post is still 1.00.05, and I doubt that he received his notebook with an older BIOS as the current version has the microcode for the MR 5870. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5679418&postcount=4
His review overall is sound. He covered most of the basic aspects that constitute a review for a notebook that isn't a flurry of undetailed, uncontrolled benchmark runs. However, keep in mind that he wrote his experience with this machine coming from an older Compaq notebook, which is in a completely different class, so his perspective is going to be very different compared to one of those jokers a few pages back that came from an Alienware notebook. I'm not saying this is a bad thing as everyone that buys a Clevo comes from different previous notebooks and are obligated to their own best opinion regarding it providing that it is accurate. For example, the W870CU is heavier than most other 17 inchers on the market, and the market does not just consist of the Clevo 17 inchers, the M17x, and the G73. The HP dv7t for example is a slimmer and lighter package compared to all of the above.
I do like the sketch humor though. This one was worth spending my time reading albeit short and sweet. 6/10. -

Silent Mode on this machine doesn't shut down any of the fans either, no?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
No, it locks them at their minimum speed unless the temperature somehow exceeds it's first threshold.
-
Alright..
I kept my review as simple as possible, not going into any complicated parts like the way my processor reacts when I do this or what kind of relation has my quad core when speaking to the graphic card while half my fans are working at 55% of their capacity in order to repel 23% of the noise.... You know, the down-to-earth stuff. Tangible things. Stuff you mom will want to read.
Ok, I must confess, I dont have a job at Tom's Hardware. I also never visited Microsoft's headquarters and please, slap me in the face for being totally clueless when it comes to Linux.
Im just a normal Joe simply explaining what are the things I liked and disliked so far with this PC. Excuse my ignorance about the fans... didnt know that there was so much going on about these things but you know what, at the end of the day, the fans are still too loud even on lowspeed mode. I dont care how it gets from point A to point B cause the results are still not good.. Its like buying a mustang thinking it's got good handling...I dont care about the leather on the steering wheel... I cant turn properly!!!. I had read somewhere the silent mode shut down one fan which is why I was saying that.
The weight might indeed not be THAT bad... but it still called a portable computer and if some people were thinking about buying it, hoping it was easy to move around(for job or school), well ITS NOT. Its my first gaming laptop, I guess I was blind and might have gone with the 15" knowing this before-hand, however its not a MAJOR con for me cause 90% of the time its not moving. it could have been maybe 2 pounds less and it would have made a world of difference!
I simply wrote the kind of stuff I would have wanted to read beforehand. I know its a bit light for probably 95% of the people here but I was aiming for the usual Steven and the casual Jackie on this board who are looking for their next rig but are as clueless as I was. And also for you little bobby. -
If you think this notebook is heavy, please don't ever buy an Alienware M17x.

He's been warned so I better not see him on the AW forums if he ever decides to buy an M17x complaining about the weight. Because this bad boy will tear a few of his tender tendons. Personally I love heavy notebooks, it lets you know it's constructed of quality material.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Yea, we all know that weight = quality
....and dont worry, im not going to rant in the AW forum because theres no way Im going to pay 25% more just for the lights and sparkles. And I prefer the sleeper look over the gamer look. -
That's cool, I love my sparkles. -

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Don't worry, Karass. They're only going to be here for a few weeks until Alienware releases the MR 5870's for their notebooks. They might be back again a few months from now when the GTX 380M is released though.
-
Even if I had an AW I wouldn't be hanging out too much in that forum anymore.
It became nut-job central with all the noobs and threads filling up with randomness. -
I'm sick and tired of 15" gaming, but I'm not feeling the $400 premium over the W86. I'll wait to see how the GTX 300M turns out and who carries it though.
tbh, that $1400, 17" MSI GX740 is pretty tempting -
or the $1400 Asus G73 which is way awesome!
-
-
Speaking of G73, when are you going to sell yours drake?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Also 90*C+ temps for a low TDP, top tier card.
-
^
I am still unsure if those temps are correct.
With mine, I could stress the system and it would never get hot. Slightly warm, but never the feel of a smoking hot card.
W/e. Guess I don't have to worry about that anymore
