The past few days I have been looking for a laptop that is a BEAST and will be pretty future proof. I dont want to get a laptop that in 6 months (hell I still want this to be good in 2 years+) will be old technology. But what I think I decided on is the Sager NP9570. I really like this laptop because it has a desktop CPU and I can pretty easily upgrade the CPU, GPU, or RAM if I ever find necisary.
The reason why I think this might be a better option than the NP9370 is that I like the desktop CPU aspect of it. But if you look on xoticpc website with the NP9370 you get a decent CPU sure. But step up to the NP9570 and you get a desktop CPU and a much more powerful CPU for only a few hundred more.
Here is what I plan to buy.

Let me know what you guys think. I know the bottleneck on the machine will be the GPU. The problem I have is that the next upgrade option for GPU is an extra $300 AND If I did dual GPU I would need an extra power brick from what I understand and that would just be stupid to carry around 2 bricks (that are each actually the size of a brick) I dont play many games as it is so this probably wont matter much.
But if I ever did decide in the future that I need something a bit more powerful I can always buy a gtx 680m and upgrade it myself right? My only probelm is I have no idea where to buy a mobile GPU
EDIT: Also something I forgot to add is that I do have a 512GB SSD currently so when I get the machine I plan to make the SSD my C: drive and the 750GB HDD is comes with my secondary drive.

I think the real issue is what do you plan on using the laptop for?
You seem set on the desktop CPU, but 9 times out of 10 the bottleneck lies in the GPU when it comes to gaming. Any of the Ivy or Haswell i7 CPUs will destroy most professional software, whether desktop or laptop CPUs. Even so, as long as you get an unlocked CPU (xm series), you can overclock it as far as your cooling and power brick allow.
I would highly recommend that instead of the np570 you go with the np370 with a 3740qm with a 7970m crossfire or 680m (with crossfire later). The issues such as heat, weight, and size will eventually get very tiresome. Not to mention for the price and hassle, a desktop will have been more effective. -
I really appreciate your opinion. I did the configurations on xoticpc that you suggested and it will be a little more than a $100 extra than the NP9570 and thats with a single GTX 680.
Thanks for your suggestion. I might end up going with that. But I would still like to see what other people suggest.
As for my uses I would like it to do just about anything I throw at it. So I dont want lag in games, I want to run VM's general stuff. Im thinking I would like to dual boot linux and windows 7 but we will see about that. -
It's an odd configuration...........but I guess if you don't need gpu power then w/e.
-
Whats so odd about it?

unless your doing some heavy video editing or some scientific cpu computing, you can do away with the lowest quad.
i also recommend getting a single card gpu solution, as sli/cf can get iffy sometimes.
get the 680mx , or if you can wait check out the upcoming 780m -
For scientific/workstation computing or professional modeling, it would be best to go with a Quadro or Firepro GPU. You will also likely need a quad core. -

Sometimes you can buy them directly from Sager, Ebay tends to have them from time to time too.

If you don't need something specific with the desktop CPU then go with the 9370 as the mobile quads will not perform significantly slower than the desktop ones but will run MUCH cooler.
Put the saved cash into a better GPU. -
Before I can give you a suggestion what is your actual budget for a laptop? The reason I asked is because I noticed that all Sager resellers have this sweet deal going for the Sager NP9370s that is significantly less with the dual 680m in SLI then if you configure it separately with the same configuration.
-
I think i will stick with the single 680
