I might have had this laptop for nearly 5 years. I'm not sure if it's getting tired of life or something. It's a P775DM3-G or something with a 6700k and GTX 1070.

The last few days when I've tried to turn on the laptop the fans start spinning but the screen won't turn on, not even when connected to an external monitor. If I turn it off and back on 5+ times it has usually turned on eventually. The cable to the internal display is a bit faulty I think, sometimes you have to "wiggle" the display back and forth for it to work. But I never use it without an external monitor anyway so I don't really care about that.

I'm not sure if it's time to buy a new laptop or what. It's fast enough for what I do with it so that seems a bit like a waste of money. What's usually the problem when this sort of thing happens? Can the bad cable connection to the display somehow affect it even when you connect it to a monitor? It just says no video signal.

On the other hand those Asus Zephyrus G15s (EDIT eh after reading some reviews I'd probably just buy a G15 strix with a 3060) with Ryzen CPUs seem nice. Maybe I'm actually looking for an excuse to get rid of this old laptop.

Might be worth rearing down somewhat and reseating everything.

GPU's in these machines can be finicky but, it does sound like something might be loose whether a cable or a physical card. The power cycling though to trick it into coming on might indicate a power issue not supplying enough voltage to fire up the GPU. It could be something silly like a driver issue as well. Some of the newest drivers have some bugs as I've experienced funky random reboots when installing the latest Intel drivers or screen not waking up w/ latest W10 patches.

Was going to make a thread but this sounds exactly like my issue as well. I have a Sager NP8173 and like yours, I have to turn it on and off multiple times to make it work (I too use an External Monitor with the same results). In some cases, it will sometimes make multiple beeps as well. Like i said, It eventually does turn on and operate normally.

I'm trying really hard to keep this laptop alive, especially with this GPU shortage going on.

When you mean reseat everything, do you me disconnecting every wire within the Laptop and reconnecting them?

Reseating could also mean the GPU if you have an MXM model that allows swapping parts in out. There may be a loose card that needs to be plucked and put back into the socket. Might as well check the EDP connection for video as well while you're in there.

Welp in my case (and assuming OP's case as well), my motherboard is merged with the CPU and GPU. Maybe that makes it easier for me?

It might make it easier since there's less options to move stuff around. Just check the cable harnesses to make sure their snug and test with another cable to the monitor.

The RS has a dedicated and IGP mode switch IIRC, does it do the same in both modes?
