Inspired by some of the cooling mods I've seen on this forum I decided to order som ram heatsinks and try it with my w860cu. There was no problem with temperatures, I did this mainly for fun. I did have a little hope that doing this would lower the idle temps so that I could keep the fan from running, but this didn't work out.

I also tried experimenting with the foam ring from the gpu fan intake on and off, aswell as the cover on the cpu fan, but I ended up with the foam ring on and the cover off.

I ran some tests with and without the mod and found a 2-3 degree decrease on both the cpu and gpu.

I initially only fitted the GPU with the heatsink and temps dropped from 83 to 80 degrees after 10 minutes. However, after doing the CPU aswell, the GPU maxed out rose with 1-2 degrees again. I don't know why this is, maybe decreased airflow or to much heatsinks?

Overall I am satisfied, and with the current mod (I had to redo it a couple of times) the GPU temp is down to 81 from 83 after 10 min furmark, and the CPU is down to 70/70/71/68 from 73/72/73/71. I will be getting a notebook cooler like the notepal U2, hopefully this will make the mod even more effective.

Here is a picture of the modded area (you can see the fans in the left/right edge of the picture). I removed the stickers from the heatsinks to get better access to seating the heatsinks, hope this doesn't void my warranty

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. This is the first time I have done something like this. If I have done something wrong or there is a better way of doing this please let me know. Also, I did not do any other modification to the backplate or thermal pads, only added the copper heatsinks

    THANK YOU!

If someone knowledgeable would please comment on the modification I would be most satisfied. I am beginning to think that I might have overdone it, making it counterproductive.

Also, if someone can give som testimonials about different notebook coolers and the w860cu/w870cu I would be very happy. I'm especially lookig for how any degrees different coolers have shaved off.

    Shameless page-three-bump.

Ordered some thermal tape on ebay. Some of the heatsinks are a bit loose, so I'm going to redo it when the tape gets here.

Thank you for replying! I am using NTH1 cooling paste, but I am not very skilled at applying I'm afraid.
Could you please post those photos here? I cannot see them in the link without registering (which I can't seem to do - I can't get the license code to my email).

    Thanks!
