It's been a while since I posted here, so I thought I'd post a picture of my updated HDD configuration. it's got two WD scorpio blue 1Tb drives and a Seagate Freeplay 1Tb drive all three drives were put in RAID0 nd partitioned 2Tb+1Tb , later on I repartitioned the 2Tb in windows to 1tb each. The system is sitting on a 120Gb OCZ Nocti Msata SSD drive and it's fast. Next update would be that SSD going for a 256gig if it exists and if the price drops into range.

This thing never seizes to amaze me. the things you can do with the P170EM are pretty amazing, when that 2.5Tb SATA drive becomes available I'll yet again swap the ODD port for it. I've got all my work on the laptop and an external BR burner for mastering disks if need be. the 2x 500Gb scorpio black drives in the laptop are still with me, I use an external SATA adapter to hook them up to the lappy to transfer files to and fro the office PCs.

    Update #1
benchmark of the triple 1Tb RAiD0 setup as requested by hutsady :)
During the bench the first 2 passes were really really high then they gradually go down and stay stable on those numbers, I've ran them 4 times in a row to make sure they weren't flukes.
I'll rebuild the RAiD0 again sometime soon this time will make it one solid 3Tb partition then fraction it up later in windows, as I'm thinking the way I have it setup at the moment is the culprit of the speeds, it is faster than having them in non RAiD though, only I know it could be higher than this.

Run some benchmarks like ATTO or Crystaldisk on the RAID array, i'd like to know how they are working.

    Nice! How fast in numbers?

Btw how is your windows mod doing?

For others who want to do something similar, cosmetic changes are easy to do. DeviantArt has all the tools and backgrounds and stock images you would want to do that.

For a while I ran Windows XP way back with the Windows boot screen Windows XP, version Pirated :D With a Captain Morgan like pirate image, was fun. Windows 7 is easy enough as well. For Windows 7 I just did the login screen, dock and visual style. Not going to bother with the boot screen.

@Sirana the windows mod is going well :) I'm still tweaking the services of the system to try to get faster boot ups and smoother utility of windows all in all. I made a bug in the explorer and I don't know yet with script is making the explorer.exe randomly crash upon right clicking a file or folder, I know it's a context menu entry but still debugging.

You're not having problems with the Scorpio Blue? I tried such a 1 TB drive for SRT caching, but it turned out badly. The drive keeps parking after 8 seconds and you get a pretty nasty halt while waiting for it to spin back up again, both on the desktop and in games. Load cycles went through the roof.

I tried all the different wdidle3 tricks but never got it to perform as I wanted.

hey mate, nope hadn't had a single problem with it yet, I had 500gb scorpio blacks in there before I went 1tb blue. I do a lot of heavy file transfers and I see that the blue's seem to outperform the blacks, I don't know why. I turned off my drive spindown via the power configurations in win7, apart from that I didn't use any other tools for them.

Thanks for posting that benchmarks! As you mentioned they do seem a little slower then expected with a 3 disk RAID 0 set up. When you have some time do rebuild it like you mentioned and see if you get better numbers.

    spectroplasm,

    Thx for the benches.

I'm a bit surprised at the results of these drives vs. my RAID-1

I understand this is not apples to apples. The sequential read timing make sense. I would've thought sequential and 4KQD32 writes would be faster, and the rest of the RAID array seems to be on par w/ a faster spinning two drive mirrored array.

    Go figure.

I suspect CrystalDiskMark is doing something seriously wrong, cos 38 MB/sec for two 500 GB XT's in RAID 0 is off by at least a factor of 4. In fact a single drive should give you at least twice that.

Same config measured with HD Tune Pro attached.

hm... thanks for that HD Tune result Csoren, I'll download a copy and give it a spin to see if the results are better with my current setup. Want to check everything before rebuilding

yeah, those benches don't look right, I've got a 3tb raid 0 setup with M8 Spinpoints and I get much better seq mb/s

Those numbers are more on par of what I would expect from a triple HDD RAID 0.
