The only thing that I've seen that comes close as of right now is the alienware m18x. That doesn't pack a desktop processor though.

You need a newer meaner machine? Could you say what you will be using it for, otherwise it's hard to help you find an alternative.
From your spec sheet, two bad things stand out at me: 1st, you look like you're ordering from Sager and not a reseller, and 2nd, whoever gave you that doesn't know very much about SLI because they listed the combined memory total. SLI doesn't work that way, it's still treated as 2GB per card.
The only thing I can recommend without knowing your uses is the m18x, as it's otherwise the most powerful thing out there, but you could look into a P170EM.
Also, for day-to-day tasks, gaming, anything that's not very highly threaded will see no benefit from a desktop CPU.

I was in the same boat as the OP. P270WM was full of flaws so they went to the drawing board again.

Good thing is, we have alternatives. P170EM might just be what we need, since Ivy Bridge has closed the gap between Sandy E-Series and Mobile Sandy Bridge.

    Just get this:
    CPU: i7 3920XM
    RAM: 2x8GB 1600mhz
    VGA: AMD 7970m

And you will have similar performance. Just without Crossfire. Its still faster than a P270Wm with i7 3820 + SLI GTX675m. And has better battery life. And lightweight. And still has backlight keyboard + 17.3" screen.

There MIGHT be P370EM, but its only rumors.

Alienware 18.4" IS OVER PRICED and I'd rather get P170EM + a desktop instead of this.

E.Blar That was specs from xoticpc... and I do a lot of high end graphic work, photoshop/webpages/gaming...but I want it run like lightening, I would like to get the best specs out there without paying 6000 for a machine up to 4000 would be fine... but less would be wayyyyyy better. lol

Thanks Bob I dont know I was thinking the same thing...and oh my I was reading about that as well... I dont mind waiting a little while if it means that I'll get better.... but I dont want to settle for something ....

Basically I want the best of the best....I want it to last me and be able to run as amazing so when new tech is out it still can be fighting alongside. For me its the best processor... best graphics card rest can be upgraded ie ram hard drive...

    Regarding that m18x config:
never pay AW to OC your processor for you, just get the stock 3920xm and OC it yourself.
get 7970m crossfire, it's infinitely better than 675m SLI even though it's cheaper. AW is weird that way.
Over on the AW forums, there's a guide to buying that could save you hundreds if you have some time on your hands.

I was pretty dead set on the 270 myself but after realizing the idea was fading unless I wanted to wait, i looked into the 170EM more and after talking with people on here I've realized its going to easily do everything I want it to do (CAD work, gaming, as well as the general day to day stuff) with the added benefit of something that is smaller, lighter, and actually can be used as a mobile device without having to be next to an outlet. Yes the 270 has a battery but lets face it, its basically there so you dont have to shut down when you switch outlets in your house, class room, etc. lol

Now that Ivy Bridge has stepped things up performance wise, and when the 680m comes out I'm sure it will easily handle what I want. I'll only need to upgrade the GPU to a professional (Quadro) one when I get later in my experience with the CAD programs to get into large multi-part assemblies. You mentioned Adobe so I'm assuming your looking the Nvidia way as well to utilize the Cuda cores.

I would like to add the disclaimer that I'm by no means an expert. I'm just sharing the information I have found based on the research I've been doing for the laptop I'm looking to purchase in the next few months - the end of September at the very latest. The people around these forums have been quite helpful (except for the Dell fan boys for some reason lol) so I just figured I'd share since you seem to be in a similar situation as me. Good luck!

I agree. But I have to say once I got my head out of the "oh my god I'm gonna have the most redonkulously fast laptop anyone has ever seen" cloud and realized the 170EM was gonna do me just peachy and actually have a few benefits over the 270, I'm actually just as excited to buy the 170EM now. Besides, I think I would almost rather let them build the next version of the 270 and let others test it for a while and if I decide that I really need that upgrade in power - at least I will know some other people have already given it a good shake down so I dont end up with the first generation jitters of a product that can sometimes happen. Granted they have experience with this type of laptop, but if they designed one and then tore it down before it ever made it to market - what makes me think this next one wont need a couple tweaks before she's good to go?

So dont look at it as a disappointment so much as maybe its a good thing that your getting nudged in a new direction! The 170EM can still pack a lot of power!

On the other hand, dual graphics mean nothing if NVidia/ATI doesn't update a profile specific to the game you're on.. Given the wonders of the 7970m you could quite safely overlook the performance gap between that and dual 675m.
