    Hey guys,

Recently my computer has been crashing every time I install new video driver unto it. I had always used 186.61 and they worked perfectly fine. One day I got the Blue Screen of Death and it crashed. This happened from then on out. I then reinstalled a fresh copy of Win 7 and installed the newest nvidia drivers off of their site for the 8800M GTX card and this problem still occurs. I then tried several other drivers (186.91,186.03,275.50 to name a few) same problem, weird colors, screen flickers on and off and finally a blue screen of death. Although when the standard VGA windows drivers are installed the computer runs windows and other apps fine. So I guess, what is wrong with my baby?

I am pretty sure they were the 186.61 but, let me try these and get back to you.

This is what happens when I tried the 186.81 drivers or any other set of drivers on my computer. I can then launch into safe mode, uninstall them, and use the computer normally without any drivers installed. [IMG]

That is something I haven't done nor know how to do. I would appreciate a walkthrough since I have never done this before.

It's entirely possible that your card is failing. The 8xxx series is well known for the flaw that was caused by the solder connections failing. Before that though, hook up an external monitor to make sure your problem is not related to your screen or screen connection. Barring that and the other solutions listed above, you can try baking your card.

i dont think thats a driver problem.
as malibal#2 said, try hooking it upto an external monitor to see if you get the same image onscreen.
image below is what a dead 9800GT graphics card shows up as which is a rebadged 8800 card.
im guessing its not the screen or ribbon cable if you say it plays fine once it uses the intergrated graphics.

    Showtime,

Be sure to keep your screws separate as there are a lot and it's easy to mix them up.

    First remove these screws:

Then remove these screws: (Click on the picture for a better image.)

Now you'll need some turpentine to clean off everything.

Next you can bake it according to Malibal #2s suggestion or attempt a repaste.

Simply apply a BB sized drop to the gpu and replace all your screws.

Let us know if this works for you!

dont forget to remove the battery first and hold the start button down for 15 seconds to dispel any charge.

Well guys I hooked up my computer to an external monitor and guess what? It totally works. I haven't pushed the computer or anything but this it a promising sign, no? I am thinking that I will still replace the thermal grease and go from there... [IMG]

You might try and reconnect the VGA cable to your main-board.

After the comp was hooked into monitor for awhile the same problem occurred. I then applied new thermal grease and the same problem occurred. Its looking more and more, to me, that my video card is shot. Do you guys have any suggestions or is it just time to cut my losses and invest into new technology?

It sounds like you've tried everything else that could possibly be causing it. Try the baking I listed on the last page if you can't sort it out, but before you spend all the money on a new card or system.

the baking method has worked for many many members in the past but sadly its only a temp fix. it melts the solder on the broken contacts and reconnects them but for how long it varys.

    I got to play this....

I am still skeptical about the longevity of this fix, but as of now I am amazed that the baking method actually has given my computer some new life!

    Thanks again notebook review forum.

Excellent that you managed to bring it back, at least for a while! It will at the very least give you a bit more time to search for a replacement card or laptop.

we like a happy ending :)
join the long list of temp repaired cards. try not to push it to the limit as the hotter it gets for hours on end will make it fail quicker.

slow computer at work so when i saw your first picture i thought you had cremated the card :D

always reminds me of the numpty that put his in the microwave and wonders why it exploded.
