There are many here who are considering the NP 5760 as their next laptop, and there are many here who have already taken the plunge and have one in their hands.

Just thought I'd start this thread so new NP 5760 owners can post their initial impressions and experiences here, while potential buyers can also see what to expect from this particular gaming beast. There are some in the "NP 5760 Pre-order club" thread, but this thread is specifically for impressions and reviews.

I realize that writing up a full review takes time, thought, and effort that just isn't possible for many of us. Kilim has offered to do one of those when he has the chance and we are all grateful for that.

This is the place to just drop a quick comment here and there, and we'll get a review started by shotgun approach. :)

My 5760 is currently returned to Sager for checkup.
Hopefully be back here within a week or sooner.

This is my initial Impresions so far and will have a separate review with more details included once I get my 5760 back and finish all my tests and benchmarks on it.

The 5760 is the VERY 1st laptop I have ever owned and really used.
It does not feel cheaply made and the 17" WSXGA+ LCD Screen is the BEST screen I have ever seen!

I have currently only played Star Wars: Empire at War RTS on it and it played great at Max Settings.
Will test it more when I gt it back with BF2, F.E.A.R. and Oblivion.

Here are some Benchmarks I was able to run before I RMA my 5760:
    Super Pi: 1m 36s (2m @ 20 iterations)
    3DMark05: 7823
I will run another set of benchmarks once I get "The Precious ..." back from Sager.

The Speakers sounds GREAT for a laptop.

I have used it 1 day with a LapCool4 and 1 day without the LapCool4.
I personally liked it btter with the LapCool4 as havign the 5760 in a tilted angle helps prevent my wrist to have that Carpal Tunnel pain on my wrist and hands.

I think it was the HDD that you can sometimes hear whirr at times like a small engine, but it isn't too bad.
The whole laptop doesn't even feel hot at all when in full load.
It does get warm to the touch but not HOT.

    Things to note are :
Make a copy of the FN+F# keys.
If you plan to use a mouse make sure you type FN+F1 EVERY Start-up to turn off the touch pad or you will get irked real fast when typing and hitting the touch pad by mistake.
    Thats about it fo now.
Generally I am happy with the product.

    I just have 1 question.
Where can you get the latest drivers for the 5760?
Sager site doesn't have it yet in their Drivers page.

Thanks for your review so far Kilim. I've received mine and couldn't be happier (no dead pixels :) ). I personally like the warmness it produces (It gets very cold in my room) and everyone can't get over how big and sharp this screen is. Only problem is the keyboard can get very uncomfortable at times (especially when gaming). Hope you have better luck on your next 5760 Kilim.

I HIGHLY suggest getting a notebook cooler or soemthing that will tilt your laptop.
I used the Vantech LapCool4 as my laptop cooler.
The 2 fans in the LapCool4 pushes air directly at the small middle vent while the right big vent has 2 inches of air underneath it for good ventilation.
The tilting the LapCool4 does to the laptop really helps in the ergonomics.
My hands and wrist did start hurting before I used the LapCool4.
But after I use the LapCool4 my hands and wrists didn't hurt at all throughout my 8 hr shift.

What I liekd about the LapCool4 is that:
    • Its portable
    • You can power it via a power plug or USB
(Using it via USB power I think Your not suppose to use the USB HUB or the built-in 8-in-1 card reader it comes with the lapCool4)
I also have a Logitech G15 Keyboard at home.
So what I did was get a USB Hub and just unplug the G15 from my Desktop to my Laptop when I play at home.
But when I use the latop anywhere else, the LapCool4 is my buddy.

My 5760 came with some dirt inside the LCD screen.
So I had to RMA it to be replaced and repaiured.
Should ahve it soemtime next week again.
And yes, the screen is the most BEAUTIFUL screen I have ever seen!

I would like to know about this also.
I will try to contact Sager personally when I get to work in an hour about this question.

There's no way to do that as far as I know.

Just a comment: I've found the LCD display on the front of the 5760 and the previous 5720/5320 to be one of the most useful features to have on a notebook. You'll come to really enjoy having it there after a while. Makes everything so convenient, clear, and easy to see, especially in a dark room. Everything is all in one central location so you don't have to look all over the notebook to see if the HDD is being accessed, WiFi is on, etc. It's an eye-catcher too, I've gotten a lot of compliments over it. :)

I'm in full agreement with the ChazManian Devil on the front LCD. It's very useful and adds some serious eye-candy!! :D

Kilim: That's a strange problem with your screen. Hope it gets fixed. When we shell out that much long green for these hi-end machines, we deserve the best service possible.

    "The Precious ..." Adventures log:

    6/05/06: Initial Delivery
    6/07/06: RMA for Screen defect.
6/8/06: Sager receives "the Precious ..."
6/9/06: Tracking # emailed from Sager and "The Precious ..." on its way back to daddy via 2nd Day Air UPS delivery.
6/13/06: "The Precious ..." estimated arrival home!

    Just for fun
5760 and XPS M1710 reviews here:

The major difference I think from both models used is that the Dell XPS 1710 has the 7900GTX 512mb while the 5760 reviewed has the 7900GTX 256mb.
It is really not a huge difference from what I can see.

Here is just a quick comparison of benchmarks side-by-side with the systems linked above:
(Please note that from 256mb vs 512mb Vid Cards, 512mb Vid Cards has shown to give at least a 10-20% Performance Increase)
    3DMark05
    Dell XPS M1710 w/ 7900GTX 512mb = 8524
    Sager 5760 w/ 7900GTX 256mb = 8212

Winner = Dell XPS M1710 by 312pts or 4% performance increase
    3DMark06
    Dell XPS M1710 w/ 7900GTX 512mb = 4744
    Sager 5760 w/ 7900GTX 256mb = 4681

Winner = Dell XPS M1710 by 63pts or 2% performance increase
Now imagine that same exact Sager 5760 delivered around July or later, when it can have the 7900GTX 512mb.

I can tell you guys one thing for sure....

You can install Windows Vista along side Windows Xp without a hitch!
    :D
I repartitioned the harddrive and gave Xp the first 10 GB of space and then
left a 15 GB block of unallocated space after it for Vista. The install went
perfectly for me. I now can dual boot into XP or Vista!

My initial impression of Vista is positive. The 5760 with Vista looks simply
    amazing!

BTW, I agree Chaz, the LCD display is just awesome. This is the perfect
    laptop for the power user!

Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying that its the perfect laptop for the power user. Although the price you pay for what you get is definitely a plus.

However... the troubling thing to me about all these Posts and Threads boasting about Core Duo (Centrino Duo) notebooks are that they might be a bit pre-mature, while the whole picture is soon to be in focus.

    I say that because:

    Upgradability:
    - CPU is limited in terms of the long haul (its only 32-bit no matter how you put it)
--- true that the future of PCs might not get into mainstream 64-bit, but it would be nice to have that option

    Current features:
    - I like the 17" WUXGA Widescreen on the notebook, however it was incorporated other notebooks before this one, such as Sager 9750 & 9890
    - I like the front panel controls and clock, it was also the incorporated on other Clevo notebooks before this models
    - The battery life for such power is definitely a plus, no arguments for a mobile dual core processor

    The near future:
    - this might spark a battle of words, but...
    - AMD's answer to Intel's Pentium M was the Turion 64
--- which outperformed the Pent M, and at a lower price
    - AMD's answer to Intel's Cuo Duo will be the Turion 64 X2

I am not try to create a flame war, but AMD Turion X2 will overtake the Core Duo and I would wager that it would be the next Sager notebook up for sale with the exact same specs as this 5670 model, but with the AMD chip.

So my impression of this notebook is that it may be the shiznit at this moment in terms of power with good battery life, but its demise might be coming soon.

    Game On People,

    -Gophn

Well this thread is abotu the 5760 review not the why i think the 5760 is not so great.
So you should have posted the above statements in another thread.

Some future upgrades for the 5760 seems to be a promising venture.

It has been stated by some that the Nvidia N7900GTX 512mb will be an available option as early as July.
This is currently not a fully confirmed shipping date as Clevo are still working on soem issues at this time from my understanding.

As for the 64bid Dual Core Merom.
I personally would say that it should be a highly likely probability.
Merom & Yonah are Pin-to-pin compatible and many has stated that at most you will need a BIOS upgrade when you switch from Yonah to MErom.

You can also see in teh Clevo website for teh M570U (aka 5760) that they already have the Intel T7200 Merom as one of teh options.
So I would say its just a matter of time.

    http://www.clevo.com.tw/products/M570U.asp
I am not really sure what you are tryiong to do.
Every notebook will be surpassed by anything that is released after it.
Thats just the hard cold truth about laptops.
Soemthing will always come out to be better later on.
    Can't stop it.
    Thank God for Progress :D

So far so good with mine!

Since is the first and only laptop I've ever owned, my review might not have much comparison.

The screen, WSXGA, is fantastic, clear, crisp, bright. It did flicker ever so little just ONCE (After recovering from a BSOD, adjusting the screen brightness thru fn+ adjustment stopped that) When it's completely black, I do notice ever so little light patches, going down on either side of the center of the screen. I suppose it's that way with ALL LCDs anyway and its so hard to see. Plus, no dead pixels, WHOOT!

The keyboard, is easy to use, and I'm already typing on it like a pro. There's a little lack of support under the backspace key area, but since I don't mash keyboards it's not bad at all, the rest of the keyboard is 100% solid. It's full function, with number pad and everything. However, they didn't have room for the Pgup Pgdn Home and End keys, so they mapped them to the arrow keys using the Fn modifier. That makes quick replies in BF2 kinda difficult. (No!-No!-No!-No!)

Performance. Fantastic! It's what this was made for wasn't it? It plays BF2 butter smooth, along with Empire at war. (Destroying star destroyers is MUCH more satisfying with the big blue ripple that emanates when they detonate. Oooooohhh! Oblivion runs at about the same graphic finery as it does on my Desktop's 7800GT. But one has to take into account that Obliv is INSANE to run at high lvls, and my desktop only runs at 1152x864, while the Laptop runs it at 1680x1050. ^^ I'm guessing that fear and CoD2 will be near perfect when I try them.

Sound. The laptop speakers were never meant to blast, and they put out good sound. The system manual says that there's a small sub somewhere to the right of the power button, but if I turn up the bass in the EQ, the sound gets distorted when there's a lot of bass in the music. *Shrug* Secondly, the headphones have a small issue with the optical drive, they don't get along well. When the optical drive is in use, the a rapid clicking sound starts coming through the headphone jack. DVD or CD doesn't seem to matter, but the rapidity and volume of the clicking changes based on how fast the disk is being read, and possibly where the reading head is ON the disk. But other than that, firm crisp and loud sound comes through well through the phones.

Noise. From startup, the notebook is quiet, whisper quiet, no fans. After about 5 minutes. BUZZZ!! The small fan in the center kicks in, and I do have to admit, it's a bit loud. About 10 minutes after that the main kicks in, which is rather soft and comforting. Then after another few minutes the middle fan seems to turn off or at least rev down to a point that you can't hear it. (It's off right now) I might have gotten a somewhat loud middle fan, or that's the way it is. Once you've had it going for a while it's surprisingly quiet for a powerhouse desktop replacement.

Features. Yes, I wish my LCD wasn't in army time, and even tho the appearance seems a bit dated, the lines are nice, non-fadish and functional. It's not a custom racecar, but it's not going to get laughed at either. The 1.5 mp digital cam is a bit dated however, but it functions well as a webcam. (At least I think...) NO BLOATWARE! Need I say more? Um, it has everything you'd want, tv tuners, remote, bluetooth, wireless, the whole works. The video card is second to none and the processor is new and wow, but still untested in the long run.

All in all, the value can't be matched. Check around for notebooks with the 7900GTX, and try to find one under $4k. I think only Dell has them in their XPS models, and the quality still won't match the 5760. I couldn't be happier with my baby. I've only ran PCmark06 on it, and got around 4600 marks. (I think, if I remember correctly)

I look forward to comparing notes with the rest of you tho, so come on, post up your opinions.

i have little problem with wireless connection on mine 5760. it takes quite long to open websites, or while watching streamed videos it just says buffering at the bottom of media player an counting up by 1% at a time and when it reaches 15% or so it would drop back on 1%. my girlfriend has 2year old acer notebook and it works just fine while sitting in the same room. pages load quickly and streamed video doesnt stop every 3 seconds sayng buffering. do you know wheere might be the problem? also when iam downloading files on my girlfriends laptop speed is 300-700kb/s on mine it is only around 60kb/s.
otherwise it works really great, only played oblivion so far, i have it on max details hdr on, on native swxga resoution and its smooth.

i did upgrade drivers for the ones you posted link for but it doesnt seem to help. i really dont get it. i never hed troubles with wireless with my old laptop. why while watching streamed videos is buffering counting towards 0% instead of 100%. my download speed while downloading that driver was jus 20kb/s. that is terribly low.

I'd go into the adapter properties and experiment with the settings - don't let it turn on any power-save modes.

Where are you sitting in relation to the router?

i do have power savings turned off. i am sitting probably 10-15meters from router. that shouldnt be an issue, as my old acer had good speeds twice as far as this.

Hahaha I was just about to post to you guys about somthing I really disliked about the construction of my 5760.

"Dear guys, one thing I dont like about the construction is the cheap quality of plastic used to make the clear sections of the front panel and the section above the keyboard around the power button. It's so cheap and soft! I can scratch it with a light touch from my fingernail, now I've got scratches in it... *Cry*

.... wait a minute... *Pick, pick, pick..... pickpickpickpickpick-PEEEEEL* OHHHHH snap! :p"

I should have never doubted. But dang, those plastic sticky peeloff protectors on the plastic pieces are hard to notice on these laptops! I went almost an entire week without realizing that they were on there.

THanks for pointing that out!! Yeah I was away this weekend, came back today and opened up the laptop....been slowly loading it up with apps and such. I seriosuly noticed what I thought were scratches and defects in certain parts of the plastic...now I think its just the very light plastic covering which is hardly noticable as a peel off! I will leave them on for now, but will likely remove them soon since I always do...especially when they become evidently damaged. The front led display with time...does that strip have one too? Because that seems to have some small scratches in addition to above keyboard bar with power button.

I havent removed the screens covering yet since it seems to be hardly taped on and dont feel like ripping and having to remove that stuff. The screen is so clear even with this protector thing on it. In fact the protector thing adds some depth or something it seems.

Yep, there are plastic peel-offs on the clear plastic parts of the laptop, namely the strip above the keyboard with the power and quick-app buttons in it, and the front panel with the time and instant play buttons in it.

One thing I worry is that the instant music play plastic has the text on there, so if I were to remove it, On/Off, Volume, Repeat, change song, play/pause, stop/eject...text/pictures look to be written onto the plastic? Would I then have all the buttons and have to remember which does what.

The plastic just covers over the front LCD - don't worry, the letters/symbols are imprinted onto the display, not the plastic packaging. ;)

Well, I just hit the 12 hour mark with my new M570U and I'm very pleased with it. Although I intended to do a traditional review, I decided to leave out the pictures and normal benchmarks etc since that will be the same for everybody's -- and instead focus on my impressions.

Service: I ordered from ISTNC.com and found Rick to be extremely helpful. He has answered my questions every few days, often at strange hours, without showing any sign of frustration even as I asked the same things with different phrasing for confirmation. He even contacted me on the day it came to ensure I was happy with everything. I am confident I will be taken care of in the unlikely event anything goes wrong. That being said, the TV Tuners are backordered and I am told it will be shipped to me seperately as soon as they are in stock.

Feel: I was impressed at the overall solid impression I get from handling this unit. There is a little bit of flex noticable in the palm rests and slightly on the right side of the keyboard, but not enough to notice with normal typing/resting forces. It does not creak when lifted from a single point, and the lid hinges have a tight and smooth motion path which feels like it is not likely to wear out soon. It is rather heavy for a laptop, which some seem to be very concerned with, but this was not at all a factor in my decision. In fact, I prefer heavier items because they give me the (perhaps false) impression of being well-built. The keys are silent, which is not a feature I like -- I prefered the old style clacky IBM keyboards that gave a tactile snap after each keypress, but I realize I'm not going to get that in a laptop so I'm happy with the lack of significant wobble.

Screen: I got the WUXGA screen and although I was initially worried about text being difficult to read, I am becoming used to it after only about 10 hours of use. It's an absolutely beautiful screen which reproduces life-like color. After playing a few high-def videos (1080p) on it, I can easily justify this upgrade. (If you'd like some HD trailers for trying out your own, Microsoft was kind enough to provide them with the intent of showing off their WMV9 codec: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx )

Sound: There is a light but audible hiss in the headphone output when the master volume is increased, but it is fairly quiet and should not interfere with normal listening. I have an external 4/4 M-Audio card for when quality is *that* important and anybody doing serious sound work with a laptop wouldn't be using the on-board stuff anyway. The headphone output is plenty powerful to drive my Koss R-80 headphones into levels which qualifies them more as speakers than as headphones. The speakers built-in to the laptop are surprisingly good, especially for the space allocated to them. One thing I miss, and that newer laptops seem to lack, is an analog volume control. Although they are more prone to wear, volume is one of those things I just want to know I have physical control over.

BisonCam: It's advertised as a 1.3 megapixel camera but the highest supported resolution is VGA. I'm guessing that the 1.3mp is achieved by software upscaling, which is the same scam as "digital zoom" is in cameras. The quality is about that of a premium webcam - pretty good, especially for having the convenience of it always being there. The lens inset is less than 1/2" diameter, and inconspicuous enough that those not familiar with integrated cameras may not notice its presence (especially distracted by a super clear screen right below it...) so the potential for security use (snapshots of users failing login, etc) is there.

Front Panel: The clock is a genius idea that has caught the eye of everybody that has seen the laptop thus far. Although I use military time so I have no desire to change it, I am quite surprised they didn't impliment such a setting since it's not common for people to want that. The LCD and icons are all very brilliant and easily readable in bright areas.

Ports placement: The headphone jack is towards the front, where it should be. Most are in the back, also where they should be. My only gripe is that two of the four USB ports, and the IEEE 1394 port are on the right side, located such that anything plugged into those ports will be in the way of the mouse.

Touchpad: The Elantech touchpad requires a bit more pressure to register than my older Synaptics did. I really like Synaptics touchpads and find working with this one to be less intuitive, although not awful. Time will tell if I get used to it.

Performance: Here's where it shines for sure. I haven't ran any benchmarks yet, but they aren't really important to me anyway for any purpose other than comparing to the same model. When installing Photoshop CS2, it took more time to enter the activation number than it did to copy the files. For once, I am the bottleneck. Every other computer is going to feel sluggish after this. Transcoding the 3-hour-8-minute movie "The Green Mile" took just under 20 minutes. Applying NeatImage (noise/grain removal filter) to an 8-megapixel picture took under 10 seconds, where on my 1.4ghz Pentium M system it took about 20.

2nd HDD Carrier: I was confused as some sources say the 2nd HDD has to be SATA, and some say it has to be PATA. I ordered a PATA carrier for use with a Hitachi 100gb 7200rpm drive I already had, and it works great. Switching the HDD with the CD-ROM is as easy as changing the battery, and the system automatically recognizes whichever device is inserted. It would be nice if this was hot-swappable, but it isn't.

I hope this is of use to somebody. If anybody would like a particular part evaluated I would be happy to do that.

Great! Thanks Vlad, we really appreciate you writing about your impressions, especially helpful for people looking at Sager. It looks like the NP5760 is all it's cracked up to be and more.
Definitely agree that the clock is a wonderful idea, it becomes more and more useful as you own the notebook. ;)
Thanks for the pictures as well, nice-looking setup and the 5760 stands out among everything else.

    Chaz

Excellent review & pics!! Your cat desktop background is a great way to show off the LCD, too. Every time I see a 5720/5760 review or pics I'm filled with second thoughts about selling mine. :(

But equiped as I want it it goes up to 4000$ as the same configuration on HyperSonic.com with all taxes/fees/exchange goes to 3100$. Al canadian dollars.

Buying timeframe is end of august, maybe for the gtx 512mb to be available :p .

Anyone knows where I could get this model in Canada?

    @JackBauer
Would you ship it to Canada? ;). You let it go for 1400$?

    Edit:
Got a reply from Eurocom! They'll pricematch HS with a 800$ discount lol. W00T! The thing is only they can provide a french keyboard! Good luck with your sale Jack :).

I am almost done with my review guys :D
I have a bunch of pics for it and even made a graph for Benchmark comparison with and without the Dual-Core Hotfix for each Benchmark tests.
I just need to finish writing the parts after the Benchmarks section and actually add the pictures and graphs in the body.
I also need to add the accessroies part as an added bonus for the review.

I am hoping to finish it all sometime tomorrow night.

Wow, how are u getting yours so fast? I ordered mine over 2 weeks ago, and so far Sager has delayed my order because they are sold out of the screens, and they say it might not even ship next week...Does Eurocom keep 5760's instock at their location?

ya, I ordered thru powernotebooks.com and ron and paladin44 have confirmed they are out of wsxga+ screens at sager right now. if you ordered a wuxga+ screen, you probably won't experience this delay. last I heard, we have a chance at them coming in this week... but now, ARG!... I see that the 5760 is coming with a 512MB geforce 7900 gtx starting july 5th! ACK! I ordered about 2 weeks ago and there was no mention of this. due to the current shipping delay, I'm trying to see if I can upgrade my order and wait until the 512mb cards come in...
    *crosses fingers*

I just got a reply from Abaxter and my review should be up in the front page of this site by Wednesday :D
I even made a Graphic Chart for my Game Benchmarks lol.
I tried to put as much info as I can muster on this review and its the very 1st official review I have ever made so far.

You can upgrade your order to 512MB...just call Ron.

Sager is being pretty quiet about when the WSXGA+ screens will be coming in, unfortunately all we can do now is wait.

ah cool beans, thanks for the update paladin. this delay is quite substantial, I wonder how a company as big as Sager got so far behind in their restocking of something as critical as screens.

Ah, you must be new to the laptop world :)

It happens all the time, and the major brands are way worse than Sager.

hehe, indeed. this will be my first laptop. never had a need for one before.

They must really underestimate the market for laptops then, if this problem is so widespread. I'm still debating if I wanna upgrade to a 512 card... seems like I really don't need it, yet it would be cool just to say I have it :D

I understand that the 5760's CPU can be upgraded to the Merom (when that is released in August).

Is it possible to stick a Conroe CPU in the 5760, or will that not work?

Conroe and Merom are essentially the same thing. Merom is the mobile version, Conroe is the desktop version.

So is there any chance that we could see the Conroe in the Sager 5760 and/or the 9890 within the next month or two?

No worries...the NP5760 only comes with 512MB video memory now, however since your order is with the 256MB version you still have a choice of what you want to do, but please let Ron know as soon as possible..

The Conroe is not supported by the Intel 945 Mobile chipset family, so it will only support the Merom...but don't count on the Merom being available by August.

There is a good chance the Conroe will be available in the Sager NP9890 (or whatever they may call it once the Conroe is made standard) once it is released.

I'll also check for an upgrade with Eurocom.

Those screens better come in soon, my computer has now officially stopped working completely and I am limited to going over to friends houses and work until my 5760 comes in.
