What's the difference in these models? I couldn't find anything except the S1 had better starting specs, but the normal 7280 could be built with the same hardware.
So unless I'm missing something I don't really see the point in having 2 of the same models since both are customizable.

i believe they have the s1 specs at a cheaper price than if you added those specs to the base 7280
edit: for the base 7280 at the same specs as the S1 it's +$205 -

There is no difference at all except the starting point is a higher configuration. For example, if someone was to order a 'decked out' NP7280 then the cost would be less to configure a S-1.

I should stop looking...or I'll get a crazy idea and buy one.

it's a marketing gimmick to grease you on chasing higher specs, but the prices may fluctuate

Maybe the S1 version was originally the D900F version which had only one gpu.

As others have stated the S1 just starts out with a higher spec. If you configure the regular 7280 with the starting spec of the S1 (12GB/ Blu Ray Reader/ Dual 500GB 7200's/ SLi 470M's/ 6300 Wireless) you will save some $$$.

Also, is there any reason to get the i7-990X over the i7-960 for gaming purposes. As far as processors go my Q9650 hasn't even been taxed yet...
-
for strictly gaming, i'd say no.. you're not going to notice a difference.

Yes, this is what users are saying, no real difference. Many get the NP7280 for much more than gaming. A lot of video encoders and other CPU intensive things, which is where this model shines!
