The frequency varies, but the lag happens in all games I've played on this laptop. Just in case you need the list:
Unreal Tournament 3
Killing Floor
Mass Effect
Prototype
Devil May Cry 3
Stepmania(takes the least resources yet lags most)
When playing games I run no background applications except AVG Antivirus and Ad-Aware. Turning them off does not make a difference. I also switched between D3D and OpenGL to no avail. GPU and sound card drivers are up-to-date. Any other possible cause?

Have you got the intel chipset and matrix manager drivers installed?
There may be some sort of HDD caching that is not being optimised, just a quick first thought. -
I downloaded the matrix driver from here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=17882&ProdId=2101&lang=eng
When I launched the installer, it said the laptop doesn't meet the minimum requirement to install.
Also I can't find the chipset driver for XP: http://www.pcpitstop.com/drivers/download/Intel(R)~Core(TM)2~Duo~CPU~~~~~P9600~~@~2.66GHz.html -

Ok I'll help you out.
-Did you uninstall the old drivers before installing new ones?
-Umm.. if xp has some kind of battery mode make sure it's off (like power saver mode in vista.. sry I don't use xp too often)
-Could you post the temps (hwmonitor) you're having?
-Try a benchmark like 3dmark06. We'll see how bad it is. -
Also, you might have some viruses that cause that. Actually I'm sure you have some viruses anyway, due to your using AVG, but as for whether they are crippling gaming performance, I cannot be certain.
What I'd like to know is if you run any demanding-class games (no warcraft 3 and unreal 2004 etc) that *don't* cause you any lag whatsoever. If only certain games are the problem, then it leads to more confusion. If all games give an issue, it allows us to make better decisions on what could be the cause
EDIT: I missed "all games on this laptop", but I'm leaving the question standing. If you can find a game that runs without lag then let us know, if not, then I'll put on my computer-fixing gloves XD -
-
lol hdd is hot xD. Are these temps while gaming? When my hdd got in the mid 60s it went berserk and windows explorer stopped responding all the time. 61 shouldn't do any harm tho.
3dmark is a little low, but not that much (I get 10300).
Reinstall your drivers using the proper procedure. Go in programs and uninstall the nvidia drivers, then go download the newest ones off nvidia.com and install them.
Oh and definitely don't go with vista. I suggest windows 7. -
-
Windows 7 runs flawlessly on this machine.
-
I'm saying windows 7 has some bugs within itself still, but it should work fine. My suggestion about 7 is that people wait a bit while it hits the general public first, at most wait till SP1 would be a good idea. As for Vista, it *is* the best OS for this machine.
People still think Vista has many problems that it doesn't have and base it on rumors without actually testing the software. I use vista myself and I dare you to find a problem on my machine. If you want to ensure stability, just block Service Pack 2 vista in windows update when it shows up. SP1 is more stable than SP2 at the moment.
If you're not accustomed to vista and you prefer to use 7, go ahead, but just make sure you're adept at fixing probs if any show up. Most people here who are like that just find a solution for problems that would stump the average person without thinking about it, and they'll tell you "sure dude it's perfect" but when you test it, you are like... ?? dude?? ahh!!! *throw tantrum* etc
Windows 7 isn't ready for average users, but if you're good with windows then sure. I was basing your knowledge of windows on using AVG as a good antivirus software. It's a bit shallow, but there are far too many things AVG does *not* pickup. That's why I told you I know for sure you have viruses on your machine.
Anyway, the laptop is not very compatible with XP, it is perfectly compatible with vista, and if not perfectly compatible with 7, it's very highly compatible with 7. I just suggest that you let 7 be released and let MS fix it up with updates first. If you're going with vista, however, make absolutely SURE you use Ultimate. Do *NOT* ever under any circumstances use Home Basic, and while Home Premium and Business aren't that bad themselves, I often see little bits where Home Premium (and business) don't act as Ultimate would, and not in a better way.
Any more questions feel free to ask -
Vista is the retarded brother of the Windows Faimily.
Windows 7 is the pretty girl im seeing (stupid enough for my taste) -
-
Vista 64 Service Pack 2 for the win. No BSODs here.
Update your sound and graphics drivers, from Realtek and from Nvidia respectively.
Also, ensure nothing is behind the back of the system that may be blocking the outlet of heat from the laptop. Furthermore, ensure that there is no dust buildup in the laptop...this never happened to me with this laptop before but I'm sure it can happen.
Best of luck. And don't worry between XP or Vista right now, from this forum it seems many people use both OSes on this machine without any major incidents. -
Vista SP1 here, SP2 blocked for personal reasons, no BSODs, no crashes, no driver problems (well fallout 3 crashes my display driver if it's clocked beyond a certain point, but other games don't... go figure) no sound issues, no USB issues, fast loading, good usage of system resources.
Judgement? - FTW! -
Clean installed the drivers...no use.
I guess I'll have to install windows 7, which I won't be able to get anytime soon because I'm broke. ;( -
If you can find about $50 bucks or so, when you reinstall your OS (don't waste it on XP trust me) buy Bitdefender Internet Security 2010. Should be 40 to 50 US for it, you can use it on 3 PCs for 1 year each. I use total security but I doubt you would use all the features (I think it's only like 3 or 4 extra tidbits you get for TS, but I use them most others won't) but the protection is the best I've ever seen

First reason would be ambient temperature. If yours are normal (20-22c), then maybe your laptop is elevated at the back with like a book or something (don't do that). Clean vents. If you installed windows yourself, make sure you have the latest intel matrix storage manager. If you have a Western digital, it might run a little hotter than seagates. Other than that, you might have a defective drive. -
-
He can still set it to vista mode in the bios to take advantage of AHCI, the changeover process in XP is just a bit more involved (google change to AHCI XP)
-
Sorry, I assumed he had vista. My bad.
-
Will be downloading win 7 next week. I'll see if that makes any difference.
