I've had my Sager NP2090 for about 9-10 months now and this heat issue has simply become too much for me to handle. At university I didn't have it under heavy use but still I noticed the incredible heat this thing generated. Now that I'm home it's unbearable.

I use my laptop on a flat surface, with a cooling pad. The problem is not dust. For an 8600M GT this thing should not be this hot. With the recent news, I'm now convinced that I'm dealing with a defective GPU. What scares me more, is that this thing's lifespan is surely being shortened.

I bought my laptop from XoticPC, I was wondering what they plan to do to rectify this problem, and if anyone has dealt with them yet. I'm still under limited warranty. However, I do not want a replacement since as far as I know, all current generation cards could be facing the same problems.

That is not to say I would not purchase another system from them after this debacle, however. So far I've been more than satisfied with both Xotic's and Sager's service. But I do want this resolved.

Have you run any diagnostic utilities to see what the temps of the various components are? Also, have you opened it up to check to see how well the heatsinks are set and whether the proper amount of thermal compound has been used (i.e., not too little, not too much)? Lastly, have you contacted XoticPC already, or is this your first stop? If you haven't contacted them yet, I'd suggest giving [IMG] a quick pm.

I've sent e-mails to both Sager and Xotic tech support people, but I might try PMing Justin too since he is who I dealt with back when I purchased. I just want to get this resolved as soon as possible since I live in Canada and my warranty is somewhat nearing its end.

I will run a diagnostic tonight when I get home, but I know the temperatures are uncharacteristically high. I can't comment on the heatsinks or the thermal compound however.

EDIT: By the way, regardless of heat I'm experiencing now, the major thing that people seem to be afraid about is failure in the future and a decreased lifespan of the card. Given that I have been experiencing heat problems for some time now, and that nVidia has explicitly stated that such prolonged heat will cause failure, I want to resolve this now before my system dies. I don't feel comfortable simply fixing the heat issue, if it means only prolonging failure by a few months.

I'm at work, I'll do that when I get home. But that still doesn't change the fact that I could experience problems as a result of the defective GPU some months down the road, when my warranty is up.

Regardless of heat problems I am/have been experiencing, are us customers supposed to absorb the cost of a failed unit? Because that is completely unnaceptable. As far as I see it, the "low amount of Sager users" who have experienced GPU defects is hardly comforting. The fact is, if I run into a problem in the future I will have no warranty. nVidia has explicitly stated that some 86xx mobile chips are defective. I would like something done about this.

You should contact your vendor about this, there was a recent post at engadget saying that the defective video cards were the 8600 and 8400 cards.

    Hi ,

@ minkang, How does contacting the Vendor help ... do they keep track of the S/Ns and they can tell if some are recalled or something!!! Just trying to figure out how it would work.

    G!
