I'm about to place my order for a NP2090. I'm getting the T7300 processor and 2gig of ram. I need to know if I should get Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Home Premium. Is XP going to run much faster or will the future proof Vista be better?
Thanks

xp is going to runs games about 10% faster. But you really wont notice a difference on most games because the 8600gt has enough power to play most games out now at a high framerate
I had vista 64bit (i've switched to 32bit now) and I ran battlefield 2 at 1024 x 768 with all settings on high and 4x antialiasing and my fps stayed above 50fps most of time in a 64 player server.
in addition, the vista interface runs pretty smooth, at least for me. -
I'd personally go Vista, it isn't as bad as people make it out to be, at least in my opinion. I'm using a school Dell lappy with 2 gigs ram and a 7300 and it runs like a dream, so I'd imagine it'd run just as sweet on a comparable NP2090, but thats just me anyway.

If you want DX9 then go for XP;
if you want DX10 then go for Vista. -
I'd say go with Vista, I personally have not had a problem with it. I think what some people are saying is an exageration. I mean unless you have a specific program that's shakey with Vista.

When you buy Vista there is always a disclaimer that says "2gb ram recommended." If your not playing games, 2gb is alot. That says to me that Vista = resource hog.
I say get XP and wait for Vista to be better and cheaper. -
Well yeah it is a resource hog, but the OP is getting 2GB so I didn't tihnk it'd matter. And the OP also said something about future proof, which I took as him not wanting to upgrade.
But you're right, 2GB with XP should by all means fly. -
if your used to Windows XP and have used Vista before, then you can pretty much decide which OS based on that. if for gaming purposes, then you'll want DX10 which only Vista can offer (for now that is...). Vista is a bit of a resource hog, but with 2GB's of RAM you should be OK. I'm running Vista Ultimate on my setup with just 1GB of RAM. luckily, my friend knows all the crap you either don't need or will probably never use and helped turned them off and reconfigure Vista a bit so that now it runs faster that it would if I left it the way is was. I'll probably pop in another 2GB's of RAM later on but for now, everything is peachy.

I think you can make your decision on which os you like, you should have enough power to run vista smoothly, personally i like xp(for now) i got a 2090 with only 1gig of ram and xp pro is pretty snappy on it. My suggestion , if you have never used vista go to a computer store like circuit city and test it out on one of their display models and decide if you like it.

The biggest determining factor also is the software you plan to use. If you software does not support Vista you will need to stay with XP. Keep in mind if you already ordered your laptop and plan on installing XP yourself a lot of people on these boards have been running into driver issues with some of the newer hardware on XP. I am sure you can get it working, but it might take some more time for the initial set-up if you plan to do it yourself.
If your software will work on both OS's you may want to consider Vista for the more long-term support, DX10, and better support for your new hardware.
Also, keep in mind you may have to run the software in a compatability mode or install it differently in order to get it working with Vista. Just because it doesn't work the first time after clicking next repeatedly doesn't mean it won't work on Vista. Check with the designer of the software and see if it will work.
When it comes down to it the decision is up to you. Many people on these boards have their own personal opinions either way as to which we would prefer. You need to figure out which one works best for you. -
If you're just using the OS for basic tasks like Word, E-Mail, Internet, and the occasional games, I'd say go with Vista. It really isn't a bad OS, and eventually most XP users will make the switch, so save yourself some money and switch now.
