I have a NP5791, an External Monitor, a Keyboard, and a Mouse. I am wanting to be able to to tuck the laptop away off to the side, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to set the laptop so it outputs a signal to the external monitor only. I can do it once I am in the OS, but the BIOS, GRUB, Boot Screen, etc don't show on the external. Is the anyway to set it o everything displays on the external?

I believe not, mine does that too. If I closed the lid on mine it would go all to the external (but perhaps not yours), but I don't recommend that as heat can build up and damage the laptop's LCD, as heat doesn't just exit out of the vents, but the palmrest and keyboard can get quite warm too. :)

Indeed, running with closed lid, I wount recommend, heat can build up. Im not sure if it will be enough to damage the LCD or anything, but it will raise the temps a bit. But about running only on external screen, that can be set up using the nVidia controlpanel under Screen settings/Multiple screens :) There should be an option for running on only one screen, then just choose the external screen.

Well kronarg mentioned that it's already setup to do that in the OS, but wants it to go external all the time.
Heat can damage the LCD, I learned the hard way. Once, after doing it that way for awhile, I got some screen corruption when I booted up my laptop. Thankfully never happened again, and I left the lid open after that.

Oops, sorry about that, was a bit to fast there :(

I dont actually think, that you would be able to get it not booting on the laptop LCD.

Well that seems like a major flaw. I have an old toshiba that the screen died it but we just removed the lid and screen and use an external without issue. I just assumed most laptops would work like that. I am probably going to end up building a new desktop now... I was trying to use this as a dtr...

You don`t see the BIOS screen because the image cloning is done through Windows, via the Nvidia Control Panel.
I have heard it`s possible to use an external monitor as a primary one,and bypass the onboard laptop screen, but can`t remember it .
I`ll do a little searching,it`d be a shame for you to get rid of a preciouse 5791 :D

Well as I said, with my laptop anyway (Inspiron E1705), if I close the lid it automatically goes to the external monitor no matter if I'm rebooting and in the BIOS, or in windows.
I don't recommend taking the lid off or apart just to bypass the LCD though. :D

Well, if you want to remove the LCD from the laptop, I guess that it would work. The problem is, that the first signal the laptop gets, is from the primary LCD. If you REMOVE your laptop LCD, then there is no signal to or from any monitor and any external screens should pop up as primary.

I just dont think you will be able to disable the laptop LCD and get the external to work as primary from boot, unless you either totally remove the LCD or just disconnect the cable to it.

My guess is, that like any other desktop GFX's, the mobile ones have 2 connectors for monitors, as that would make sense. The problem here is, that the laptop LCD is connected to the primary monitor connector and any external would connect to the slave port. This would be my guess to whats going on :)

I guess that it is because, when your closing your lid, it would work as disconnecting the laptop LCD and the only way to get a signal through, is to go to the external screen ;)

Again, im not totally sure, but thats my guess :)
