NP5792 Fan Noise

Can someone who has one post a vid on youtube so we can see how loud the fans get when gaming and normal surfing.

EDIT: btw there is a constant humming noice that is caused by the camcorder (sounds old =.=)

the actual fan's dont kick in until about a 50 sec into the thingy

 

Oh wow it is loud when its not even doing anything. It sounds louder than my zd8000. Thanks for the info I might do better off with a gateway pseries.

That is really disheartening to see that video. I was really almost ready to buy that lappy, but that video is making me have second thoughts about it.

 

Who can confirm that videos accuracy?

 

I'm curious. How would you be able to tell how loud a laptop was from a video? Can't you just adjust the volume?

When I watched it, I could barely hear it over the fan in my desktop on 3/4 volume.

like i said before, the sound u hear through out the video is only the recorder. the actual fan noise doesnt come on until 50-60 sec into it. it doesnt sound too bad actually :/

 

is there any program to turn the fans off if you want?

 

Unless if you want your components to overheat in moments of extreme heat or during programs open that utilize the notebook's hardware to its full potential, then I wouldn't do that.

 

since there are penryn processors the fans only go on for the gpu basically.

you can underclock ur gpu temporarily or change the temp at which ur fans should turn on. i wouldn't recommend turning them off completley

 

can you use some program thing to underclock/switch to integrated graphics so that the fan will turn off? Well, not turn off but like not start up since the GPU would stay at a lower temp is what I mean.

 

I don't think you can switch to integrated graphics but you might could underclock the GPU. You could try notebook hardware control or rivatuner.

 

thats wut im thinkin. i will be a college student by the time i get this laptop and my logic is underclock it so that it never reaches 48c and put it back to max when im out of class. shouldnt be too much of a problem for me i hope o.o

 

That is the normal fan noise. Got used to it, but when I particularly listen for it, man it is driving me nuts. Good thing I keep it on a solid surface, at about 2 inches suspended(for proper cooling) so that this thing never goes above 65C in gpu temps, 53 C in hdd temps and I don`t know the CPU temps yet...,but I would say a 60 C...

 

actually this is the biggest thing that has kept me on the fence from buying one so far...

 

Hallo, I am the one who did the video and I can assure you that actually the video doesn't sound as bad as the reality!
My advice? Forget about it and buy the Clevo D901C- a far better choice.

 

That's too rich for my blood. I might just wait for that new Gateway.

Anyways, can someone currently with the NP5792 tell me whether or not underclocking the GPU will keep the fan from going off during normal applications other than gaming such as web browsing, AIM, MS Word?

 

If you can't stand noise you won't be happy with it... that's it... trust me...
I don't have anything against this laptop, but I would have been really happy if somebody had warned me at the time I bought it... It was just a waist of time...

 

I'm just so bumed out by this now.

 

Honestly, I don`t thing anything could lower the fan noise...there`s no program nor any app tha can tune the sound they make or the speed they run at...
The GPU fan kicks in at about 48 C and cools down till 44, then repeat sequence...
Although there is a downside,the fan noise, the thing is however on the coolest gaming laptops,and I mean that in both temps and looks

I was also looking into making the noise less audible and toning it, while doing just plain webbrowsing and such, but nobody shed any light. I would program the fans to start when I`m only gaming, or above 55 C,which I would never reach while just browsing and such...

Another $300 I just don't know if I want to sink another $300 my starting budget was $2k and I went over that, so I don't know. Maybe a Sager just isn't for me.

 

Yes, me too - the notebook is great and very fast, but loud. This is my only complaint, altough to be far I am not sure if other 17'' notebooks with 8800 are any quieter. But my M1710 is nowhere as loud, in fact during normal browsing fans to do not come on at all.

I hope that they have fixed this problem with the new NP5793. Cause I'm thinking of buying it, but only if this problem is gone.

 

The 8800M GTX is a very hot card, it took Nvidia a long time to make it into a mobile platform to begin with. Hot temperatures and loud fans are not totally uncommon in the realm of 17" gaming laptops.

I do hear that the D900 series is very cool and relatively quiet, due to Compal's effective heat-pipe and heatsink designs.

 

Yes the fans kick in as soon as the laptop is turned on. I am not sure if that is anything to do with 8800, since they are on permanently even when just browsing without any 3D activity.

 

I have one and yes this thing is very loud.... but when your not playing.... the fan start once in a while... its not that bad... i compare it to a desktop with a 5x00 geforce series... the real problem is that you have it right under your hand...

but at full load the temperature stay cool... under 70 for proco and under 80 for videocard... so its not that bad...

penryn or not the noise will stay the same... penryn isnt god itself... the next generation will worth upgrading... not penryn...

 

So would a notebook cooler help?

Well I'm normaly watching TV while I'm gaming so maybe I wont notice it so much.

 

after a while you dont even hear it... but if you use the build in speaker and play... you will hear it... i use earphone (i always did)

But for mp3 its not that bad... 17inch laptop with a videocard do as much noise... maybe more maybe less... but im pretty sure that clevo made a great machine...

 

Personally, if you want all this power, you can't have it all, these things have to get rid of the heat some how, and well that mean's u will hear it cooling.

If you stuck your head next to a desktop GPU 8800GTX i'm sure it wouldn't be slient Why would it be in a laptop?

 

Is there any chance of changing the fans out ourselves with something a bit quieter? or are we stuck with the stock fans?

 

Wait, are you saying that the fan is under your hand? or that it's warm under your hand?

And what's the issue if it's the fan under your hand?

 

My perception on the 579# series is that if you are committed to leaving the notebook on a desk on a good cooler(Zalman seems to be the usual choice-i use it for my 15") then this notebook will be okay due to the fan noise....the perception is that something in the background will drown out the GPU fan. However if you are like me and need to take it into class or to the library then maybe this isn't the best bet for you and you need to either upgrade or downgrade to the 9262 or 2090 respectively. Then you have to make decision on either weight or GPU/screen size based on your decision

what if you underclocked the video card, would it still hit 48c you think? and if it doesnt than i will be perfectly fine with brining this into a class.

also stupid question but will there be any longterm dmg if i underclock when i get to my class and clock it back to regular when im done? (if underclocking would help the fan problem that is)

 

Yes it is... When you don't play it is not loud at all...

 

All high power machines have to have fans to keep them in check. I have an 8800gtx on my desktop and when I'm gaming it sounds like a tiny leafblower. Any brand laptop with an 8800m is going to have fan noise. Any cpu or gpu that operates at 60c has to have a fan to keep it from damaging itself and other internal components.

If you really detest sound noise that much you need to go with a lower end video card with the lowest speed penryn that you can handle. Throw in a 5400rpm hard drive.

But if you want a gaming laptop that can play the latest games with eye candy enabled, some fan noise has to be expected. In my opinion, that video is worthless, I couldn't hear anything but the hum from the camcorder, even with volume on my desktop cranked to 2/3.

 

I hear it and very well... you have to listen after 56 sec. when the fan starts to spin.

 

I just canceled my order this morning. It's so nerve racking to buy a laptop without ever using it or seeing it in action. I've just spent 4 weeks doing this with HP crap and don't want to have to send back the Sager. I'll just wait until more people have had a chance to play around with it.

shouldnt there be a way to modulate fans and underclock when you arent using any system intensive stuff? i want to for example play mp3 files from an external hard drive, thats it.. anyone, anything? it is only annoying when its totally silent otherwise and youre listening to something quiet.

 

Or you could just buy my VAIO - 1.3GHz centrino platform and it doesn't make a peep. On those very rare occasions when the fan comes on at all, it makes about as much noise as does a snoring mouse (heard from next door ). 'Course, along with the absence of any noise comes the absence of any performance, but who's going to quibble over details, right?:wink:

 

How would you compare the fans to say...an xbox 360...softer, same or louder?

 

Under fullload it makes really big noise, and the T reachs up to 70°C. But Idle seems to me still OK
