Hey, I just wanted to make a thread for np5792 owners to post their impressions on the NP5792, including reseller, accessories, and obviously the notebook / system itself.

Personally, I am exceedingly satisfied with it - ordered my notebook from Xotic and received it with no hitches save a small shipping notification error, havent had the chance to really test out the 8800gtx card yet but im expecting great things, the screen is amazing, battery life is better than i expected, it's pretty big and heavy but for the things i'll be utilizing it for, it's perfect (video, editing, design work... games), and it comes with a perfectly satisfactory case that makes carrying it easy. the fans are not as loud as i anticipated. I have no qualms at the moment..

I did but a Logitech VX Nano on a whim and quickly found out I'm not that picky when it comes to mice, and 75 dollars is too much to spend on a piece of plastic for me.. Anyway, I like using the mousewheel as a button.

I have the 1680x1050 matte screen and I couldn't be happier, plenty bright and just plain beautiful.

I am also extremely satisfied with mine . Runs flawlessly . Fresh Vista HP x64 install , stock drivers except for video ( 169.28 ) .

    WSXGA+ ( 1680x1050 ) screen is realy nice , brightness is amazing . This screen is 100x better than my previous WXGA+ 1440x900 on my E1705 .

But i have 1 dead/stuck pixel in the very left area , middle part of the screen . Its hardly noticable though .

Fans run pretty good , cant realy say anything . Like many others said , you hear the air moving and not the fans themselves .

Wireless works great , no issues .

Touchpad and keyboard are nice , although i would prefer less resistant buttons . Fingerprint reader works nice , saves time when typing in administrator password whenever you turn it on .

Sound is very nice , quite a bit louder than my previous E1705 . Audio driver provides plenty of settings to adjust it the way you like .

Camera works fine , mic too .

Lap doesnt get hot , no matter what you play ( Crysis , BF2142 , WoW ) . Gears of War dont want to run on mine , for now . I might put Doom3 too .

I would make some pics but camera decided to brake when i got this computer .

card reader works without a hitch!
keyboard is a little resistant, but it's simply a matter of getting used to a notebook keyboard again. dito on camera and mic .. both work great.
uninstalled / disabled the fingerprint reader and the internal modem, as i wont be using either.

just installed vista sp1 rc. havent noticed that much of a diff... yet.

How loud is it compared to a dell type laptop...ive read a lot of people think these are too loud to take in to a quiet environment without people looking at you...

Is the power brick massive? I saw a youtube video with the 9xxx model and it looked really huge!

the brick is a little big, but not obnoxiously so. consider what it has to power . . .

i don't think its loud at all. everyonce in a while fan kicks on, but thats momentary.

The brick is like any other power supply for 17" laptop . The size seems normal to me .
What do u mean how load it is ? I assume fans ? If you want to take a laptop to the class / room with people then get a 15"/13" laptop . I havent tested if the fans will completely go off if u will select the least power consuming mode . It might be fine if you are sitting in the back of the room .

is it very loud though? I doubt I'll be taking it to the classroom with me but in the event I do I might have to consider a 15". But, the idea of only being able to use an 8600M GT is not very appealing to me. And, to whoever is going to say to get the Alienware m15x since it has an 8800M GTX... well that thing is quite qualified to be a 17" in my opinion.

because it's loud? or because it's heavy? And wouldn't it be okay if I just turned it to lower power consumption? Well, as far as I know I won't need to bring it anyways since I can always take notes on paper. The only thing I'm worried about is having to run some programs in the classroom.

An Alienware will sure turn some heads in that classroom. But it will make some noise, last little time when not plugged-in and be heavy.

Because of the GPU fan, that`s why. Its not that much the fan itself, but the sound of the air rushing out. Which needs some improving. I can`t take mine to class because of that. But the battery keeps me connected about 1 h and a half, at sreen 5/7 and power saver. The deal is that nvidia powemiser is not working for me.
On my old nx9420 the poweplay was the way I got to 4 h ( which is awesome on a 17incher) ,using settings for optimal battery life, which meant downlocking the speeds to half. I`d clock the gpu to 100/100 when on battery, that would save me a LOT of battery life and the gpu fan would kick in waaaaaay less than usual. If only the cpu and gpu didn`t share the same heatsink, that blasted fan would never kick in unless when gaming :D
I`m going to experiment with this as soon as I find an app that will let me downlock the speed of the gpu...then post back results.

You could use atitool (works with nvidia ;)), where you could set profiles, and also, how much battery can you save by downclocking the 8800? Couuld you post results? That would be awesome :D

    Currently I have the 7950GTX :p
I`m planning to get the 8800M GTX later on.
About heat and consumption, these 2 gpus are identical, so whatever goes for the 7x goes for the 8x.
How much battery would I save? Well lets put it this way, if at 575/700 it uses about 45W , at say 300/400 it would use...25? still a gain.
About atitool, having issues with vista x64
Can`t get any thing to change my clocks yet...running the system underclocked would keep the fans quieter and less often powered up...which what battery mode is all about for me...
Gaming was never thought for battery mode, that`s for chat, browsing, wireless net on campus etc...
I`m fine with the noise, but in a quiet room you need a quiet laptop,so if anyone has thoughts about this, feel free to drop them. As stated, when I`ll find the desired app, I`ll experiment with downclocked CPU an GPU to see if it helps.

I`m sorry if I gave the impression that I have the 5792. but appart from the 88x , the laptops are identical...

In my opinion, the 5792 is more attractive looking than the AW's, for it is simple, nice and clean at the same time attractive, while for me the AW is just too flashy...

Hi all, I received mine 2 days ago from KillerNotebooks. Main specs: Penryn T9500; 8800MGTX;glare screen;200GB Hitachi hdd;Intel Robson;4GB mem;Vista Ultimate 64. And oh! cool custom graphics on the lid.

I have been spending whatever little available time getting familiar with this machine, coming from a Dell 1705. My first impressions are all positive and my only dislike are the sound in/outs in the front panel.

So far everything works just as Mark told me it would. There is NO NOISE (sorry for the shout) in my machine and whatever may have been said derogatively about Killer's heatsink mods, they work, period.

Having received Crysis, Bioshock and Halflife 2 for Xmas, I will soon be immersed into them.

So far I've had no problems with drivers (another myth busted) or other programs or apps as Vista makes provisions for 32 bit apps (one more myth?).

The machine is fast, real fast and I plan to leave it stock (note the choice of word) as the benchies Mark provided me are way up there and good enough for me. In addition this laptop will be my main PC so stability is important. I also travel extensively and portability made the choice of the Executioner SR-X (Clevo 5792) an easy one over the 9262.

Not to be too snarky (well, ok, maybe a little  ), I have to agree. To use my favorite type of analogy, the AW looks a bit like one of those annoying little poser-cars I see way too much of - a stock Honda Civic (or similar ilk) to which the owner has affixed a bunch of ridiculous fiberglass fins and scoops, a bunch of twerpy LEDs, and a really annoying exhaust buzzer - whereas the 5792 looks a bit like an old '80s Caprice or LTD (the box-mobiles, but with plenty of potential) that still looks stock, but which has real cojones under the hood - a block that's been leaned and meaned, with ported/polished manifolds, better cams, etc, and a redone suspension/drivetrain that can put the power down where it counts and keep it there (they exist, you just don't usually notice them until they effortlessly smoke the aforementioned Civic).

Given a limited budget (none of us are Congress, after all), it largely comes down to how much of that budget is going to be allocated to atmospherics. At least that's my two-cents' worth.

Let me just double-check, your laptop is a Sager NP5792 model, right?

Also, would you happen to know what forms of payment they accept? I'm hoping for Paypal...

And what's your opinion on the custom CPU/GPU mods? Do they make the system heavier but keep it really quiet?

I am going to try to answer the last 3 posts:

    1) My laptop is not a Sager, it is a Clevo based Executioner Sr-X with extensive mods and already with a Penryn. You can find out more at Killernotebooks.com including mode of payment.

    2) "they charge a ton"...I paid less than I would have for an Alienware and followed the build of my system practically step by step. I was even advised to wait a while as many on this board were whining about the 8800 availability and board swapping. In the end I got the for now bleeding edge with a Penryn, no less.

    3) Once more guys, NO NOISE! I played FEAR at defaults and no noise increase.

    4) I have a snap od CPU-Z for you and I looking to find out how to put it up

Seems to me that many myths are created here by people with a little knowledge and large following. I.E all the Vista bashing (I've been using Ultimate since the first RC w/o any problems and now with SP1 RC). No driver problems no program or apps problems. My Exec shut itself down and re-started when I went into the Nvidia control panel just to check it out and clicked on system information. For those who are interested, the driver version is:7.15.11.6743 date 11/07/07

    That is really a shame.

It appears the CPU-Z image shows that the processor is a very early Engineering Sample (which is prohibited from being resold) as the revision is B1 (Stepping B1), and not the production Penryn that was released today at CES.

    This is really bad because:
    1. It is not a production Intel processor
    2. It is not even one of the more recent ES (Engineering Samples). The most recent ES is revision C0 (Stepping C0). The one ogun shows is so old it doesn't doesn’t even give the CPU it’s official Specification (Intel® Core™2 Extreme T7500 @ 2.6GHz (ES)). The latest ES versions, and the official production version will of course be stated as I described in the Specifications box.
    3. It is in violation of the Non Disclosure Agreement on the Penryn that was just lifted today as the Penryn was formally announced by Intel at the CES in Las Vegas today.

Last question, then I promise to stop bother you for now - it looks like the Sager NP5792, right? I looked on the KillerNotebooks site but they have 2 different pics for it, one is a standard gray laptop and the other is the Sager

It's based on the Clevo M570RU , that`s why they look the same. But they add custom heat sinks and such, and from the looks of it, THEY WORK.

The T9500's are available on the black market (and is in violation of NDA as Paladin44 states). These are not the final production CPU's from Intel. They are referred to as Engineering Samples. You can find them listed on eBay.

EDIT: eleron911, all M570RU's come stock with 2 fans internally.

I don`t care about cooling, my unit stays fridge sharp (61 C in Crysis :D ) , what truely bothers me are those blasted fans. Now that ogun specified that there is such a clevo without fan noise, I can only sore even more than before...I can`t take it to school without bothering people...it`s ridiculous! Would I have known about this, I would have gotten the D901C ...the fan is on even now and my brother can`t sleep because of it :D

Fans are required to keep everything cool...without them you would not be at 61 C in Crysis.

The problem with amateur mods is that they are interfering with the original manufacturer's design, and the mods we are talking about here, particularly without fans, will probably cause heat damage to other components in the laptop over time.

Adding more fins and surface area is not necessarily a good thing as it can actually trap more heat unless there is additional air flow (fans) to move the heat out. Worse yet, it is now blocking the originally designed air path, and while it may lower the thermal right on the CPU and/or GPU, it will undoubtedly NOT do the necessary cooling job on the memory, hard drive and motherboard.

The bottom line is you need to expect fan noise when you have a "Bugati" laptop that has such powerful components, and I will bet that you would be a lot more upset when your components fried and you found out that Clevo will not support the warranty for whoever modified it that way. Better to find a way to accept the fan noise now than have it fry on you later.

I know from my experience that the GPU fan kick in at 48 C. If I were to undervolt the CPU , and underclock it and the GPU whilst on battery mode, would it ever reach 48 ? Seing as these 2 components share the same heatsink, and the cpu fan stayspretty much on all the time
That is all I want. Quietness when on battery mode.
Appart from that, my compliments to clevo and sager, helluva laptop they made for me. :)

    Eleron,

If you were States sides it would be an easy thing for you to get these mods from Killer as he does many of them for Dell and Sager owners.

Looks like I inadvertently raised some hackles from some people here who have vested interests in denigration. So I'm off this thread for good and enjoying my Executioner. I only came here because of the open invitation to chime in. I never wanted to cause problems.
    Tchau!

Ogun. we would all appreciate input from your side about your laptop, and constantly. I really want to now if this thing holds up. So please do stick around and post some inputs from time to time :)
Also, would you do some benchmarks on it? :)

I would be a little concerned about having pre-release processor parts. Those CPU's were never meant to go in to a production envorionment and didn't go through rigorous QA. Given that the reseller is even willing to sell these CPU's shows some shady business practices. Hopefully he will stand behind the product.

If he didn't tell you that the CPU was not a production model then I would see what you can do about getting it replaced personally. Especially since it isn't even a final revision.

    Eleron et Atomic,

If you want some benchies, please go to guruofgaming.com
gamingnotebooks and find my latest post. I don't mind coming here to learn but am not interested in flaming or so-called expert opinions from sales people or from those that take sales peoples opinion for gospel.

    Merci et a bientot

If you are happy with your laptop thats great. But the fact that you have a prerelease revision of the CPU that was never meant to be in anythign but development machines is not opinion it's fact.

I'm not a salesman for anyone, I just think people should know what they are going to get from that site is not a true Penryn retail but a preproduction model that is not even a final revision.

    Buyer beware.

ogun, I apologize if I offended you.

However the CPU-Z screenshot you posted in #27 of this thread speaks for itself:
This is clearly a very early ES (Engineering Sample) version of the processor that is never supposed to be sold to an end user, and does not give you what the production processor will.

If you want to see what a CPU-Z screenshot of the latest ES version with the latest Stepping Revision C0 looks like, please go to http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3195&p=2 Notice it also shows the full Specification that I referenced earlier.

I am sorry to be the bearer of the bad news, but unless your vendor told you that he was selling you a blackmarket ES processor, and you accepted that, you were simply defrauded.

If you are really here to learn you would have appreciated that instead of trying to through your own flames.

Nice review by AnandTech.. But there were a couple differences: Oguns' ES cpu runs at 1.263 versus AT's at 1.25. Don't know why. Ogun also cinebench'd higher scores with the same cpu about 7% higher on both 1CPU and XCPU.

As for the cooling mods causing problems. Um, my old m570u has been modded by me with copper heatsinks on both my 7950GTX and my T7400 ES cpu. This machine litterally runs 16 hours a day and has done so for 18 months. In addition, I've overclocked to 2.43 GHz from the stock 2.14. Not one single problem or failure..

I can understand you bashing the sale of ES cpu's by a seller, but the problems you're trying to sell from the other mods simply are speculation at best... btw; ES cpu's are unlocked and most floating around are the best (intel doesn't exactly want failures for the reviews). The ES cpu's have a decent blackmarket because they are often the best.. Just look at the record holders here http://valid.x86-secret.com/records.php
more than half are made on ES cpu's...

Can someone with the NP5792 comment on the noise level? I live in a college dorm so noise is an important issue.

Also, what are the CPU and GPU temps?
    Thanks

Yes, but is taht really worth it? I mean, If I was in oguns position, i would return the lappy and get from a reseller like xotic or powernb, for the fact taht a reseller is doing illegal stuff just bugs me. Anyways, you can now get the penryn :).
