Hey, I'm sure someone out there has had this problem and it has been answered but i couldn't find it anywhere. Heres the problem:

Fear runs great on full settings for about 5 mins then out of nowhere, the frame rate drops to like 3-4 fps and stays this way until I close and restart game, then it happens again, and again.

Is it overheating, then downclocking ? Please check your temperatures....

Thats just not possible, it doesn't even get hot enough for the fans to go past medium-low speed. When I play Crysis, those fans are rockin', but the gpu never skips a beat-for hours- then I play Fear for 5 minutes and it's like, F/U bunghole!
The only thing and can think of is how the 8800 underclocks when your not running a 3-d program, I know this by using GPU-Z. This is what GPU-Z tells me:
    Default: GPU 500, Mem 799, Shader 1250,
    Current: GPU: 383, Mem 301, Shader 767.

I've tried AtiTool, RivaTuner, and nTune to moderate the clocks, but non of them work in Vista apparently, it keeps telling me something about unsigned drivers. AH!

Try patching the game, maybe. Also, try different drivers ?

Sounds like an overheating issue.Or your drivers are wacked and you need to update/patch the drivers/game.
Check the temperatures : use HWMonitor for the CPU and HDD and RivaTuner for the GPU.

AWs m15x has the same issue. My guess the current 8800M GTX drivers don`t like F.E.A.R very much...

It is amazing to see the difference in FEAR going from my old, dying HP zd8000 (P4 2.8ghz, x600 256mb) to the nauseating pawnage that is the T9300 and 8800m gtx (couldn't afford x9000); oh well, all hail Sager's upgradeability.

Fear actually played pretty well on my zd8000, as opposed to other games. I might have to reinstall it now, though, and try it out with my new 8800M :)

The zd8000 actually makes a pretty good home server/media computer now, though. At least with a 500GB MyBook attached to it hehehe.

Will the T8300 and T9300 show a major difference in performance?

The extra clock speed and extra cache should help quite a bit :) But don't expect any LARGE differences in performance....

yeah, the zd8000 was quite a performer with the 256mb x600 in the past, but it just doesn't make the cut anymore, plus the fans are dying so my card got burned I guess, because it has a vertical purple stripe one pixel wide running down the screen about 2 inches from the left side. Also, the power button is going bad so I have to hold it in for like a minute for the thing to start. I might get it repaired and use it as a spare or sell it to someone, but dunno if it is worth it.
