hey i got Sager NP5793 bout 2 weeks ago so it's still pretty new. I got it with 8800M GTX and everytime I play games when the fans turn on there's this weird smell...can't really say it's burning smell...not sure how to describe it...was wondering if anyone else got that and could tell me what's the source of the smell. Thanks.

Maybe a small bug or mosquito flew/crawled inside your notebook when you were playing and it got fried.
-
shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
The only thing I can think of is that if your vents get dust in them usually the dust will burn up and could make an odd smell. But if your system is only a couple weeks old that probably isn't the case... :S

First, take your baby apart and check out the fans and sinks and if thats all good it could be excessive grease in the fans that just needs to work itself out... use Fn+1 to rock the fans for a while and see if it goes away.
-
mine did the same thing but it ended up going away. never came back so i didnt ever worry about it
-
I heard someone on this forum said that a new computer always flow out some kind of chemical substance.
-
its possible it may even have been the thermal compound setting.. as5 (if thats what you have on yours) takes nearly 200 hours to fully set.. prob not but its possible..i wouldnt worry about it unless it comes back or doesnt go away

I've heard just the fan grease in need of a burn-in, mine did smell funny for like 2 days but I ran burn-ins on it constantly to check for integrity so it went away quickly. Could be some other chemical though.
Bottom line: your uber notebook is OK.
>>>interesting thought z, I think you may be right -
yeah as5 hardens as it "beds" and it needs to be cycled for it to work right. me personally i dont use as5 anymore. i use either mx-2 or ic diamond now (a tube contains 7 carats of crushed diamond dust lol)
-
thanks for the replies people i think it's probably as5 or grease....hopefully it'll just go away
-
has it ben doing it for a while?? so it has not gone away yet?

you had it for 2 weeks, but how often do you play games and actually get the heat rocking? Also, perhaps you were sent a system that didn't undergo a burn-in procedure (xotic pc does this, even though I did my own for 2 days
).

Mine had a similar smell also at the beginning, but I figured it was the smell of "new", quickly faded away

OK, you guys have done it!
I was curious so I just smelled the back of my computer!
Are you happy now?
@Changzor: Just squeeze a little tree in there and you'll be just fine -
Sounds like a fetish to me, lol.
Don't worry, all new stuff smells differently, and fades away fast. -

^ My point exactly.

This must be the funniest thread I read in the last couple of weeks.
Stinky computers ROFL. -

I wonder how many people are sitting behind their laptops right now smelling them.
It's like this whole "you can't lick your own elbow" thing where you know exactly everybody's going to try it. -
Yeah,I bet most people can't touch the tip of their nose with their tongues either

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)

this thread was doomed from day one, just like notebooks that make funny smells; or all notebooks for that matter.
YOUR NOTEBOOK IS GOING TO DIE, in 6-10 years
Just do what you can: keep it clean, watch temps, be nice to plugs, replace cooling compound every 1-2 years, always back up your HD, and beware of dreaded ambient moisture in the air (humidity)!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015
