A friend of mine has my old Sager NP5793 which is having problems with the 8800GTX. So we are looking around for a replacement card, however I do not know what type of card.

Also along with the type of card can it handle the 9800 as long as it has the latest bios?

    Thanks ahead of time!!

Highest card it can take is a GTX 280M MXM III V2.1 I believe. I'm pretty sure that it can take a 9800M GTX.

I believe a 9800gt or a 9800gts will suffice without having to change/mod the heatsink.

It can take anything from 8800M GTX up to 280M GTX. This includes the 9xxx series cards.

It can also take quadro cards, such as the FX3700M. The quadro cards often sell for way cheaper than the GeForce cards, yet they perform the same if flashed with a GeForce BIOS. For example the FX3700M can be flashed with a 280M GTX bios and it will work as a 280M GTX. And it only costs $200.

i thought the 5793 doesn't support the 280? I've seen it posted a few times and someone always links to some thread about a black screen.

    Did somebody call me? ;)

The M570RU aka Sager 579x does support the 7950GTX, 8700m GT, 8800m GTX, 9800m GT and 9800m GTS from the Geforce series, then the Quadro 1600... and it seems that the FX3700m is also supported by the BIOS, while the 9800m GTX, GTX 260m and 280m are not supported by the Bios! They physically fit, but when you start you get an error message "mxm structure error". Then 30 seconds of Beeping. Then it boots as VGA Standard card, but 3D mode is locked.

You need special vBios/ and or Bios, I once got a 9800m GTX to work with a modded vbios (from mxm-upgrade). Some people tell that they got a GTX 280m to work, too, but no one ever said HOW he did it exactly.

The guy who put FX3700m in - you can look here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/513308-advice-upgrading-clevo-m570ru-3.html - flashed it to a GTX 280m and got the beeping error then...

I personally had about 5 RU´s in my hands (not all mine ;) ), and one that had a 7950GTX in it could take no other card - no 8700m, no 8800m GTX, the screen just stays black then and I read that some people had the same problems, while others could upgrade. Maybe there are some different mobo versions out there.

Not to thread poach, but I am asking a question which would probably aid the TS anyway. If your 8800m gtx died, would you replace it with a 260m gtx for well over $400, or instead attempt to use a quadro fx3700m instead? The 3700m is cheaper, more or less, yet it seems to be relatively similar, specs wise? The main differences (from what I have seen): 3700m's memory speed is 800mhz, and the card is 65nm. The 260m's memory speed is 950mhz, and it is 55 nm. Although, it is worth noting that the 3700m has 128 shaders, while the 260m has 112. Yet, some of the benchmarks I have seen (very few) look worse for the 3700m, which is confusing. I would have thought they would be similar to each other. I should also mention that the 3700m's speeds (core/shader/memory) are all faster or equal to an 8800m gtx, it also has double the memory, and more shaders.

To know which GPU card could be installed in your machine, we need first to know what motherboard revision you have. For this, you have to open the bottom of your machine and look for a label on the motherboard with a V x1. x2 ( x1 and x2 are numbers). Normally this label is under the RAM modules.

I have never seen a M570RU with a version higher than V4. Well, if you are sure that this is the right version number then it support officially:
    GeoForce : 7950M GTX, 8700M GT, 8800M GTX, 9800M GT and 9800M GTS
    Quadro : FX 1600M and FX 2700M

Why did you stop after "beeping error then..." :p

Its all about the VBIOS... If 3700m is supported then why not flash a gtx 280m to 3700m?
I wonder what tiny invalid part of the MXM structure would be turned off by doing that? Oh well!
I would guess there is a 9800m gtx VBios that will work 100% for the gtx 260m too.

I would just like to say officially No fx 3700m cards can be flashed to gtx 280m as of yet due to driver conflicts except for one single card I have. There have been around at least 10 unsuccessful attempts that I know of. This may or may not have something to do with the VBIOS originally shipped with the card I have.

I do however encourage those who are willing to continue these attempts especially if you have a card with a VBIOS sticker ending in ".10". or a lenovo card.

also ...to add to the list of supported cards, quadro 3600m and 8800m gts are worth mentioning, they are decent, and the HP 3600m ones work beautifully with a stock 9800m gt vbios.

Does anyone know if the m860tu doesn't support the fx 1600m?

Are you sure the vram of the 260m is running @950mhz?

I ask this because I know a lot of people think that all 280m GPUs have their vram @950, but the mxm 2.1 version actually has it's vram running @800mhz.

This may also be the case for the 260m.

Make sure you compare the mxm2.1 version of the 260m with the mxm2.1 3700m.

Because systems with an MXM3.0 260m also have faster CPUs and ram, which would change the results of some tests.

And again the thing I said about the vram could also explain this.

MXM 2.1 cards do not support bandwidth memory above 800mhz by specification. In reality the memory modules will easily clock above that. But there are absolutely no MXM 2.1 cards that were put out with higher clocked vram than 800mhz.

Some MXM 3.0 cards actually have higher core and shader clocks than mxm 2.1 cards of the same model. Notebookcheck.com has a great comparison but they simply are not correct about everything.

As far as the 260m vs 3700m... I believe that MOST 260m can beat MOST 3700m with overclocking. But I could be wrong. GPU OCs seem to rely so much on driver stability its hardly worth the comparison.

    Hi!

My graphics card is dying on me to now and need a new card. But still can,t decide what to do.

I,am thinking of purcasting Quadro FX 3700M card from this seller on Ebay: NVidia Quadro FX 3700M MXM 2.1 III Work as a GTX 280M - eBay (item 150555563582 end time Mar-29-11 22:09:11 PDT)
But can i flash it with a 280m bios without having the beeping isue!?
EDIT: After reading the forum it is beter to get the HP Quadro FX, that works plug and play! Than this is a beter buy than!?: http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-nVidia-Quadr...985?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item35b0321569

And how fast is the card with stock bios, faster than a stock 8800m GTX?

I contact Clevo Germany about the 9800m GTX in a 570RU-U and they say that it works with a custom vbios that they flash before shipping it. But the price is way to high for me now! It,s around 550 euro,s! :(

HELP! i like to play my games again! :D

Yes its faster than 8800m GTX, gtx 260m and 9800m GTX.
The first card you listed is Lenovo, the others are HP. The Lenovo card is better yea.

Replaced my working 9800 GTS with a 3700m. Works perfectly ! Only modding I had to do was drill 4 fixed nuts out of the copper housing !

    Increased 3d06 score by over 1500 .

    Thanks guys!
The card fits staight in and runs without problems. The only problem now is that i cannot install dox drivers anymore?

The bios number is: 62.92.5C.00.05 and like to flash it with a bit overvolt (1.05v or higher) and higher clocks, maybe 280m vbios but i,am not sure thats possible without beeping or lockt in 3d mode!?

No, that version does not work with the 280m vBIOS, and neither does the m570RU, only the TU.

You can overvolt to 1.06v, just use the stock vBIOS.. It is rather hot but yes you can overclock a lot. I don't know about drivers though, you could try a HP or 9800m GTX vbios if you really want.

    Hi, Thanks!

Is there a guide how to overvolt th bios to 1.06 volts?
I run the newest driver (267.76) from nvidia now, runs good but frames in games are lower that my overclockt 8800m gtx.

I can overclock the card to 600.900.1500 with stock volt, 1.03 volt. Played 2 hours games without driver crashing or high tempatures, 72 degrees at max!
Idle around 40 degrees but depents on the driver you use.
I applyed new thermal pad and cleant the heatsink and fans.

Depends on if you have a Lenovo (p612 board) or HP (p398) card.
You can change it in the vBIOS, and reflash.
You might want to get a 180w AC adapter ;)

The lenovo cards have yellow components like this:

    NOT like this:

Wow! This card likes to overclock! :D In furmark it runs half a hour on 710.900.1650 on 1.1 volts! Max temps, 80 degrees!

Yes i need a bigger adapter. Pulling 7 amp,s and 150 watt now from a 6 amp and 120 watt adapter!...

    I do a 3DMark06 test next...

I just flashed a 9800m GTX to one of these cards, and it works very well, so I think I get these ready to SLI pretty soon ;)

Not a very high score but i run win7 32 bit and a t7800 2.6 Ghz processor and offical Nvidia driver.

It needs a bit more overvolt to get it stable in 3dmark, 1.12 volts.

@Tirenz, apologies to ask but could you send me the modded 9800m gtx vbios for the M570ru-u. My 8800m GTX recently died and I have an Alienware 9800m gtx lying around that I would like to use. Just need the compatible bios's if you've got them?

    Cheers

Quick follow up question (sorry!) but does this need the .13? I'm on .11 at the moment and tried hunting for .13 a couple of months ago but could only find dead links :S

I don´t think the BIOS version is relevant. You still got 30 seconds of beeping at the start. The trick is that the card is no longer unlocked and can be installed with drivers from laptopvideo2go.
I think I have a copy of the latest 13a Sager BIOS and can send it per Mail (ISO image) if you PM me your email address.
