howdy folks, would like to run some crazy problem by y'all

ive had this np5793 for months, been running great.. GPU temps never getting much over 70C under heavy load. Maybe I saw 75C once. I was fat and happy.

then one day, in the middle of gaming, it just shuts right off. and won't come back on. Ok fine, these things happens, get an RMA from Sager (bought it direct) and ship it off.

got it back a week later, and all looks well, boots up and everything seems to work. documentation says "REPLACE VGA-M, UPDATE BIOS". so it sounds like the video card got replaced. ok.. start playing a game, and within 3 minutes, the GPU temp gets up to 96C. !!!!

so what do you think. my theories are that either the new GPU needs to settle in (TIM needs to cure, etc.), but i'm not really buying that one, I think its more likely that the GPU was installed badly, too much TIM maybe, or heck maybe none.

I've emailed them referencing my original RMA, waiting to hear back. I'd hate to have to ship it again but i don't feel like scorching my lap either.

Sounds like they didn't apply the thermal solution properly. If you've got the skills to open it up and check, you might check to see if the thermal paste was properly applied to the GPU, and that they didn't leave anything else in there by accident, like plastic wrapping; otherwise, don't run it until that issue gets taken care of.

hey, thanks for the comments. they've responded to my email so we're having a conversation about it now, but if they don't come through, i'll definately be pulling the heat spreader and taking a picture of whatever i find.

welp, here's what i found when i finally got time to crack 'er open. Looks a little sparse to me.

reapplied, and checking it out.. already running cooler at idle, we'll see how it goes under load..

ps - Justin at Xotic PC, thanks for the awesome tutorial on this M570RU gpu removal, that took away the "I haven't messed with this type of HSF setup ever before" apprehension. Thanks!

There's like nothing even on that. That would at least be problem #1
