I see others have had problems with this very issue and the solution for them was the simple switch to "Realtek Digital Output" in Playback devices. For myself, however, I cannot for the life of me get my HDMI cable to output sound to my Philips 1080p digital TV. I am currently using nvidia's 186.03 and my Realtek driver is 6.0.1.5643.
I often use the digital output of the laptop to connect to my speaker system, so I know it works, but this is always through the digital port on the front of the computer. After I plug the HDMI cable in, i get the picture properly but no where in Realtek does it recognize a HDMI port is being used (not sure if it's suppose to).
I don't know if I have a setting wrong on the digital tv (nvidia successfully recognizes it as a Philips), if my HDMI cable is improperly carrying audio or if my sager is screwing up.
Any help is appreciated.

Ok, I just noticed that the NVIDIA control panel is saying my connection to the digital tv is via DVI. So.... something must be screwy with the 186 drivers? Anyone else having similar problems? I just read it might have something to do with the HDCP compatibility function that nvidia added to the more recent drivers...

Try setting the default sound playback device to the digital output, then rebooting. You should get the windows shutdown sound from the TV before it reboots.

*bump*
Thanks for the suggestion ettornio, but it didn't work. As nvidia hasn't released another reference driver past 186.03, I don't know if any of the newer ones out there fix this issue OR if the 9800M GTX is having problems with my Philips HDTV (as I've read in another forum, but who knows).
Anyone getting proper HDMI audio out with the newest nvidia drivers with a 9800M GTX?
Thanks again for any help!! -
186.43 WHQL is available:

So I heard back from nvidia:
"I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with our Beta notebook graphics driver. We are in process of working on an updated driver, and are still collecting data to ensure that we cover as many known issues as possible.
If you want, you may report your issue at the following web page: The feedback you provide will help us improve future notebook driver releases."
I love how it was only in this second email back from them that they mention the drivers are beta.
But hey, at least they got back to me and listened! I'll try 186.43 and see how that goes.
Thanks for all the suggestions. -

That's actually a generic email.

Doh! Oh ye destroyer of dreams.
Well the first email I got from them was from a real person. I swear! I sent in my system specs and the like.
