I have been waiting for the Montivena release for quite some time now. I am ready to purchase the NP5796 but I have one question that I want to get clarification on, and I am hoping one of you guys may be able to answer.

My assumption is, even though the Mobil Quad CPU's don't exist today, if I purchased an NP5796, I would be able to upgrade the CPU in that unit to one of the Mobil Quads that come out in the future. Is this a correct assumption or will there be a different Clevo unit that launches when the Quad CPU's become available ?

    Technically, it could work.

Hardware-wise, it's a big yes or no. The first thing you'd need to find out is if the NP5796 can handle the increased heat and higher power requirements of the Montevina-based quad. It'll be at 45W, compared to the highest on Intel's mobile chips, which is 34W, and dropping substantially, with a lot of the new chips, to between about 25W and 30W, depending on the chip. And of course, if an applicable BIOS update was released for it.

So, so long as your NP5796 can support the difference in power and heat, and a BIOS update, it should work.

The different socket or power issues it what concerns me. It is starting to look like I may have waited for Montivena for nothing, since I have my heart set on a Quad capable Notebook.

The NP9262 is becomming more and more appealing the more I look at it. The weight issues and brick size are not the issue, it was more of wanting some kind of battery life that had me waiting for Montivena. I won't be waiting another 5+ months for a quad version of a Montivena notebook. I need to get off this purchasing fence I have been on for the past 4 months since I sold my old notebook.

For thoes of you that have the NP9262, what is a realistic battery number you can give me.

    For example:

Watching a DVD movie from DVD drive

Watching a DVD quality movie from the hard disk

Sitting in the OS typing a word document

Can I get any type of battery life doing these tasks or is it really just a mobile desktop that I need to keep plugged in. (My old desktop replacement would give me 30 mins tops watching a movie from the DVD drive.)

Is there any kind of car adapter that doesn't require me to hard wire an Inverter to my battery ?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. I will be putting an order in on a NP5796 or NP9262 tomorrow so I have to make this decision already. Someone help push me over the edge and just go with the NP9262 already. All I need is just a little nudge. ;)

No problem, One question: do you really need a quad?
I mean yeah they are more "future proof" but if you need more battery life over raw computing power (or to just brag about 3dmark scores) then I would lean more twords the 5796.

I just noticed no Esata or HDMI ports are available in the NP9262. That effects my decisions a bit as well.

You're right. I really do need a mobile 17" machine for DVD movies on the road, hotel gamming, and somekind of battery life when needed. I really like the idea of having an external esata drive that I could bring along and external HDMI if I want to stream a movie to my tv..etc

I might just have to let that quad dream go for now, and just get the NP5796. It is probably the smarter decision. I always have my Desktop rig to use when I really need that computing power. (Which already has a Quad and SLI)

That looks like the way I am leaning now. I probably feel some regret for not getting the other no matter what I do, but thats the way life works. Time to step off the fence and make the move and live with it.

I posted ths in another thread about the Clevo 570TU which is what that Sager is. I have a q9100 quad core and it does not work in that system. Furthermore a call to Clevo R&D department confirmed that.

A wait for confirmation or a motherboard revision would be in your best interests I believe.

When the 570 Ru then the RU-U came out there were several motherboard revisions within 2 months. It was frustrating to tell someone who just got a RU, when the 8800 GTX came out that it wouldn't work in their system w/o a motherboard upgrade.

If I remember right the first ones out did not have fingerprint readers, then they got a revision to a second mini-PCIe slot for Robson Turbo memory, then it was a MB upgrade for the 8800 card. Then of course the " Extreme Edition" heat sink revision for the CPU (that others were saying the system didn't need when I was doing them for a year prior :D )

I personally don't want a repeat of, "You're 3 moth old notebook can't upgrade to the card (or in this case CPU) you want."

Eleron, I don't know if you're interested, but I read your "Laptop Improving Guide" and thought you may want to add a section on battery life like I have on my Guru Forum: Maxing out your battery time... feel free to use what you want from it, or link to it or whatever.

May not count for much, but I talked to someone at xoticpc about this very issue. I was told that I should be able to upgrade to the quad core when it is released. However, he did say that they wouldn't know for sure until the processor is released. So cross your fingers.

Isn't the CPU gonna be released in August? That's not 5+ months, in fact that's less than a month.

    Shyster1:
    • The system will turn on with the processor installed
    • It will not boot (not even boot codes.) Sometimes you can find this happens in systems with certain types of RAM, so I tried it with two different brands and two different speeds of DDR3 with the same result.
    • The system will stay on as long as you want it to, so it is not shorting out or overheating the system.
    • As a side note, the previous x9000's have issues also. When you can get them to work, it is sporadic and for short periods of time. It would appear, no backwards and (as it seems right now) no forward compatibility... that is not optimal.
If this was an issue that could be addressed with a BIOS, you should get something at boot. Clevo R&D said that the CPU wasn't going to work at this time. I offered to send a processor to R&D to speed up the process of getting something working, but that was declined. That could mean a lot of things. It could mean they released new systems and have too many other things on their plate, or they don't have the chip and want to wait or maybe they do have it and are working on it already.

Whichever way, with a $3,000 investment, I thought people should know.

    f4ding:
All the more reason to have this information. I would guess the Q9100's will be two months and the QX9300's three at the earliest.

I am basing that on, historically I have gotten new chips about 3 months before release. There is release dates and there is availability. When a new technology (chip, GPU etc.) is released usually the major players like DELL (Alienware), HP, etc. will have it due to their contacts and economies of scale. They will buy up all the stocks and smaller places like Eurocom, Sager, and boutique shops will be waiting and waiting and waiting. It isn't by any means fair to good 'ole fashion competition but it happens.

Case in point, when the Core 2 Duo came out we we're shipping systems in July of that year. If I remember right the chip was released in August, in late September and early October we were still selling processors to WidowPC for them to fulfill orders at 100% markup because you just couldn't get them anywhere.

kett73: The image of the 570TU above with the quad core installed is right here in my lab... it does not work.

SO Mark, I take it the 570TU does indeed have but 1 fan? Looks to me as the same size as the GPU fan on the older RU systems,or is it a tad bigger?
    And does it pay off?

is the 860 in the same boat?
I know the 860 won't officially support it but does it have as many detection issues?
I bet this will likely be fixed with a bios update. I've seen this occur for tons of boards. THe p35, p965 for desktops boards to be specific needed a full bios update to address the severely different microcode that is in the new architecture; I wouldn't doubt the same thing for these new quads since these haven't been around yet so I'm betting on a patch :)

It has two like the old models, and they are the same. The GPU is just covering it in the picture on the last page. There is already a thread about fan noise here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=278085 and I hate to say... it's noticeable. Like I said over there, hopefully a BIOS revision will correct at least the frequency the fans turn on. RIght now they go on almost all the time and there is no reason for that judging by an infrared temperature gauge.

    NoelGallagher:
Sager released a statement that the 44 watt processors will not work in the 860's according to Don / Paladin. The quad core is a 44 watt part.

It isn't a detection issue. A detection issue would most likely just give you a CPU U code error that you could bypass. Be careful as a retailer saying a BIOS upgrade will allow these processors to work.

The qx9300 is only 45w, it's barely egging clevo's self made threshold.
I'd like to see how clevo is gonna live up to quad support in the 5796 if it's not working atm.

I don't think the wattage is the issue in the 570TU, I believe it is something else, which would more than likely carry over to the 860 even if/though the 860 supposedly has the wattage limitation.

Speaking of the 860, killernotebooks do you have any additional info on why the 3870 and the 9800m gts where pulled or why the 860 is taking so long to ship? Seems like there is more going on than we know.

Hi bwhxeon I don't have them (860's, my Hamidashi) up on my site yet, but I can find out for you tomorrow.

As far as the 3870 I do know there were issues with ATI bugs and I wouldn't be surprised, having dealt with AMD(ATI) in the past, if they couldn't deliver the parts. Amazing as it sounds AMD is infamous for vapor-ware releases. Everyone was sick of it a long time ago. Technologically AMD is so far behind in the CPU arena it isn't even funny. To give you an idea, the Q9100 CPU I have here is copyrighted 2006. Intel is miles ahead of them; AMD should have focused on their core industry instead of buying ATI. Unless they have some super hat trick coming... this game is over.

The 9800 GTS info is something I know nothing about as I haven't sone anyting with the 860's yet. I can find that out for you tomorrow also.

As far as availability, I know I have been able to get those chassis for a week now if I wanted them. I am not sure what would be holding up the shipment other than maybe they can't get their hands on enough of the new processors (which is speculation on my part.) I can find that out also though.

bwhxeon: I have your answer. The 860 chassis has not arrived yet. They are saying they should come in next week, but honestly a lot of these arrival dates are a guess on the distributors part because of shipping and customs.
So that is why they are delayed.

As to the second part of your question; they pulled the ATI video indefinitely. Pretty much like I thought, they have an existing relationship with nVidia that they don't want to jeopardize, especially with all these nVidia based systems that they just released. Trying to get something set up with ATI is a low priority right now.

From what I was told, the systems will come stock with the GT 512 MB.

Sager announced that they were pulling the 9800GTS and the ATI cards from the 8660. This is only Sager though so it may be pricing availability or something with their product arrangement with nvidia.

Hmm, that still doesn't really explain why the 9800m gts isn't even available as a selection. Sounds more like they just want people to buy the 9800m gt.

I actually edited that post because the GT is standard and the only reason I got that the GTS was pulled was that it was maybe a typo(???).

I think at one point they were thinking GTX, but I guess both that and the 44 watt processor support (quad core) were nixed.

The good news is that I think many people actually wanted the nVida card, and would have upgraded anyway. I think they may reduce the price accordingly.

To give you an idea the upgrade price to the GTS was like $130 and the GT $190. Maybe now (at least I am hoping) the base price with the GT will be lower than the old base price with ATi + the GT upgrade price. [fingers crossed]

Consumption translates into heat, regardless of how you put it, a 15 inch laptop has a chassis that can only do so much. Unless you bulk the heck out of it.
Why ? Probably the deal is to get rid of the more expensive parts, nvidia must have too many of them.I love to speculate, so don`t mind me though.
Sounds like a valid point , if ATI makes it happen. Their whole "faster and cheaper" politics is not paying off. Except for the 4850 and 4870 so far.
    Mobile world has to wait.

    Interesting.
Because I received an email (after I contacted them first and asked them because I could see them as available with future date for release) from Kobalt that mentions the following.

We have been told that the Mojave will indeed support the QX9300 quad core
processor. There has been no official release of testing figures because the
QX9300's are not for sale as yet but we expect no problems.

Very good email too, very polite and helpful.

I would say Neil will from now on have me in his Rolodex.

Well it is kind of disappointing that the new units will not support the Quad mobiles.

It has me thinking of putting the breaks on my NP5796 order since it is held up for the 9800m GTX anyways, and either waiting for a refresh or just going the 9262 route.

Had no idea this thread reached 5 pages, I wasn't keeping up on it. Good info in here, thanks again to the people who provided that info, even though it wasn't the info I wanted to hear.

It is certainly worth considering. Personally, I would wait for the 570TU refresh or whatever they are going to call it. I just prefer that system.

KillerNotebooks, on your site, with the Executioner, you can order quad-core (Q9100). So what's the difference?

Originally when I got the quad core I put it on the page. It was removed though along with the x9000 which also does not work (Make sure you refresh your page when you go there.)

Our order process is a little different/more personalized too. When you place an order, it goes directly to me. Then I contact you and we move forward with what you want and what you are getting as well as payment. It isn't a web cart, or robot doing your order, there is human interaction throughout the order / build process so it eliminates confusion and error.
I told everyone the Q.C. didn't work, if they can live with that in the current chassis, they take the x9100. Most of the people that ordered in the last month were just happy I told them to wait for the new MX chassis. They didn't want to wait any longer.

Good for you KillerNotebooks, that is a great way to do it...PowerNotebooks.com has done it the same way for over 9 years now :)

That is definitely the way to go Don I agree and thank you for saying so. :)

I guess another difference would be that many of these other distributors were selling these units with the assumption these were going to take the quad core and some were putting the QX9300 on their configuration selections. I DID in fact have it on my page, but took the extra step of getting a processor and testing it. In fact in this thread a retailer actually removed his post which came after kett73's that said, "The quad cores would most likely work in this chassis" after I said they wouldn't. They removed their post after in this thread (post #15) I referenced the thread where I was warning people about it a week earlier (right when the machine came out).

People make mistakes, we all know that, but when you GO BACK and ERASE a post you made where you were in error... that's kind of sketchy.. When I made an error calling a Q9100 a Nehalem I went and posted WHY I made that error and APOLOGIZED to the forum for saying a Penryn was a Nehalem (post#15). I didn't just go back and edit or erase the posts. I do tend to hold myself and my craftsmanship to a higher standard. I take pride in building all the Clevo units myself and doing all the research and testing I can before anyone else.

I'll have to check who sent the email but I expect it was sent to you pretty much at the same time it emerged that they wouldn't be supported - sorry if this has confused matters but obviously information takes a while to filter down from the different sources and out to our team.

Not sure what you're getting at here Mark. I believe that what you proved was that the CPU wouldn't work in the chassis you had at that point in time. It's irrelevent to the announcement from Sager as they had it comfirmed by Clevo. It's quite different from proving that it would never work, it just happened that you tried it, dismissed it as being compatible and then a week later it happens to be announced as unsupported.

Even if I did have a Rolodex I would't have you listed under technical support or insider information so please don't tell me what I should and shouldn't do - you are belittleing me infront of the members here

Ouch, I didn't mean to offend you buddy and NONE of my comments were directed at Kobalt so I am not sure where the anger stems from. You aren't even on the same continent as me so I had in the past considered you "friendly competition".
Irrelevant to the announcement Sager made? Um, ok... I am not following you here. I also NEVER said that my tests PROVED it would NEVER work... in fact I said WAIT FOR A MOTHERBOARD REVISION IN THIS CHASSIS. So if you are going to quote what I said, please quote it directly and don't take liberties.

Brovine, I am not your enemy... you can listen to whomever you wish, just like everyone else. I said that Rolodex comment tongue in cheek and it was meant to help you diffuse the situation. I never meant to make you feel as if I was belittling you. So I sincerely apologize I made you feel that way.

This industry is a LOT smaller than people think and having the right contacts makes all the difference in the world. Take it with a grain of salt, but make no mistake... one more person thinking I don't know what I am talking about makes no difference to me.
