so i been playing with my 5797 for a while now and i couldnt help noticing the distinct "mechanical" whine coming out of the right most heat sink(the square one on the edge)

is it supposed to whine like that? the fan in the long/flat heat sink sounds like a normal laptop fan.

    any ideas

You might try tightening up all the screws. I had one come loose once and it whined.

you mean the screws of the cover? or pop it and tighten the screws that hold the fan in place

Mine whines as well, so it seems to be either normal, or it's just due to the batch of 5797s.

Sort of sounds like a quiet string trimmer.

remember to use your Fan Toggles to either:
    - set fans to Max Speed or Auto (Fn+1)
    - set fans to a constant Medium Speed (Fn+3)

or use "Silent Mode" when you are not gaming.

well the sound is not loud, its just annoying and strange, thats why i thought i'd ask. the fan of the GPU sounds fine and like every other laptop, but the small one of the CPU is just /wrist

sounds like something's wrong, is everyone's like that?

Anyone have a good method by which you could record sound and then get it to play at a set group of settings on another person's PC? I'd like to record a baseline and see what others think.

...and yes I realize that different speakers and room conditions would play a major role, but there's not anything that can be done about those.
