Hey guys I have a problem for months now. My computer runs very warm to the touch, even when I have the screen closed for a few hours. For example, I left my laptop on all night but idle (no programs running, single-digit cpu usage), and when I opened it the keyboard and especially the lower-left palm rest area was very warm. SpeedFan shows GPU @ 54C and all CPU cores @ 63C.

This would be fine for gaming temps, but this is idle! It's not dust because I always dust the heatsink and such with compressed air every week, and I even replaced the thermal paste inside with arctic silver 5 thermal compound when I thought it was the paste issue. I don't know what's going on! Any ideas?

FYI Fan does NOT turn on at this temp when the computer is shut closed. As soon as I open up the computer, the fan kicks in slightly. I tried to manually adjust fan speeds, but SpeedFan does NOT detect any fans on this computer (I'm not sure why not).

I understand that these temperatures are not very dangerous for the hardware, but I'm very used to my previous laptops which when idle would be very cool to the touch the entire time when only websurfing or word processing. Hell, this laptop heats up when I watch a movie! This should not be happening!

Those temps are higher then normal for idle and you've done what I would usually suggest. Mabe redo the thermal compound hoping for better heat transfer. It could also be summer time affectnig it as room temperatures are higher during summer.

why aren't you sleeping, hibernating, or shutting down when you leave it all night with the lid closed? or whenever for that matter?

closing the lid with the machine running is a good way to trap heat. i'm assuming your selected power plan has been set to do nothing when you close the lid.

the longer it sits at medium-high temperatures, the quicker the paste and components degrade. i mean, like you said these temps are nowhere near dangerous--but they're obviously not good or normal either. what's your ambient temp and where is the laptop being left when not in use?

If speedfan is running all the time reading your gpu it may also be keeping it active.

SpeedFan is known to not work when it comes to adjusting fans on Clevo systems. Are you at least sleeping/hibernating the system, as mattcheau mentioned?
